Like every author, I have the need for a fan base. Also, like every writer I want the fans to enjoy the experience of reading what I write. Unfortunately, fans can be an elusive bunch who have devious ways of avoiding letting the author know they are in fact there as fans
So when one has a real fan who sticks with the author through thick and thin, it is important to recognize the fan as vital to the mission. I’m talking about the fan who presents himself at all hours of the day and night providing consolation to challenges and congratulations on successes. I’m thinking of the fan who asks nothing for themselves but to be able to be close enough to be part of the action.
I want you to meet my truest and most loyal fan. His name is Frank and above is a picture of him in his usual position while I’m writing. Frank will not leave my desk except for breaks when I take them. For Frank’s sake, I have to remember not to pound the keyboard endlessly without brief breaks so he can stretch, grab some kibble, check on the dogs and use the men’s room. He does catch a cat nap or two.
He also is known to take a nap on things I need (like my notebook). Here he is taking a snooze. Thanks Frank for being the fan that you are.
Frank looks like a great pal.

Awww. That’s a very sweet Frank. Nicely said on the fan stuff too. It’s definitely nice for an author to hear that someone is following your series and patiently waiting for the next release. When is that again?

I had 2 fans like that. Used to tell me when I had been working too long! Sadly both are gone now, but not forgotten.

Aw. I’m sorry. I had to put down my Silky Terrier last July and still can’t write about it. Thanks

Frank is a handsome fellow. Loyalty counts for a lot. You make a good pair: one working and the other either checking your work or snoozing when it is going well. ❤ 😛
I have two of these myself. I cannot imagine life without them.

Frank has a sister who could care less. She has her own things to worry about. 🙂

Don’t you love how all your ideas are well received? Make one feel like a genius. Thanks Teri

Frank is a real gentleman. I mean, I’m sure he’d rather sleep on the sofa. But he sticks with you!

The sofa spot is his after dinner resting place. He enjoys sitting with us while we talk. He is a gentleman for staying on the hard desk. (it is stainless steel). Thanks 🙂

OK, I’ve run out of Kleenex. Frank is a superstar and the pics of him are wonderful. What a cool cat and certainly your editor in fur.disguise. I loved this post. Can I rent Frank on occasion?

Wow… He’s absolutely gorgeous! It’s so nice to have someone perched on your desk to encouragement and support, as well as acting as sounding board when needed. The Sam does that for me and, since my roommate is usually gone & my seeing eye son doesn’t give two hoots about my writing, Sam’s support means the world to me. 😊

Aw! What a handsome #1fan you have!
My #1 and #1 fans are two vizslas that have entirely too much attitude and need for my attention 🙂 But I sure like all of them!
Loved this post!

I have to agree. We also have two Boxers who are the sweetest.

I think that’s high praise. Frank must like your writing because cats aren’t known for their loyalty, unless you are wearing tuna-scented cologne.

He can only do about an hour at a time so we have to stretch. He comes right back though.

Frank is quite the beauty! I have two Pomeranian writing muses… when the mood suits them. I agree they are about the best loyal fans we have. Great post John!

Now this Frank I like 😉 Our cats are like that as well. They always want to be near us even if they are in the mood for petting. Sadly, my desk is much too small so I don’t get to enjoy working under their supervisor.

I would think he would prefer the sofa, but no. (of course he is pretty fond of the dining room table)

I found my most loyal fan almost exactly a year ago, a handsome mutt named Ozzie who likes to sit at (sometimes on) my feet as I write. It’s been a prolific year.
