I have often mentioned the fact that the city grooms the beach so that the poor tourists do not get stuck. Although to the casual observer this looks like a good idea there are other problems connected with grading the beach. Among those are the burying of trash and firewood, disturbing the eco-system and making the beach a passable road. (more cars ). Here are a few pictures.
This is the grader at work. Yes, it is a full-size piece of equipment.
This will give you an idea of how the beach looks after the monster passes a few times. He will work the sand to the water’s edge. Guess how hard it is to ride a bike on groomed sand.
Reblogged this on Smorgasbord – Variety is the spice of life and commented:
John W. Howell with more pictures of his piece of South Texas.. apart from burying trash and other debris one hopes that the driver can spot the odd tourist who has slept off his beers overnight on this amazing stretch of sand! Thanks John.

So that’s what the “monsters” look like… Intriguing. I’ll bet “Cornelis Drebbel” would like to have one of those! Mega hugs, John! 😀

He needs one. I can imagine all kinds of purple stuff needing movement.

Looks slippery and rather unnatural. Why do tourists keep driving on the beach? Guess I’m confused because they don’t let you do that here. Not that some people don’t try when they could be considered a living keg.

The State of Texas believes driving on the beach is an individual right left to the municipalities to govern. Most city leaders are allergic to necktie parties.

I do love watching those machines at work. Grooming the beach sounds like the kind of job I think about when sitting behind this desk starts to bother me.

I know you would like it. You have to take up smoking though. They all do.

I can understand maintaining a beach access road – but the whole beach? Geez…

You’d think that it would have a scoop with a net on the front to pick up trash (and let the sand filter out) and a big bucket on the top to empty the trash into. Hey, maybe I should design something like this!!! ???

Yes, you should. Thanks for the visit.

I’m frightened of the beaches in Florida that have cars on them, especially when I have my grandkids. What a monster machine. Most of our beaches along the Atlantic are eroding.

I think they do something similar along the Mississippi Gulf Coast, despite the fact that cars are banned from the sandy areas. It looks a bit like vacuuming the rug, doesn’t it?!

It wouldn’t occur to any Californian to drive on a beach. If nothing else, you could run over a nude sunbather…

LOL. Texans don’t have no nude anything

I drove on the Pensacola beach, when it was allowed.. It’s fun to do, but now I think of all the consequences, since I’m older, and marginally wiser.

That does occur as our hair turns color.

Gosh. They don’t do that here, but we can’t drive on the beach here, either.

Lucky you. Wish there was none here as well.

I’ve never understood the attraction of driving on the beach. Beaches are for sunning and swimming.

I agree with you. The majority of folks living near the beach do as well.
