Friday JohnKu – AKA – TGIF

Funny Friday

Another week has flown into history. I am happy to see Friday’s shining face. A lot of work got done this week, and I’m looking forward to the weekend. Last weekend saw the demise of my old lawnmower. I have had it since 2001, and it has serviced me adequately all these years. Last week it stalled, and when I pulled the starter rope, the engine came off the platform. I guess the metal just couldn’t stand the strain of coastal living. So I bid a fond farewell to an old workhorse. I did buy a new one and can bet it won’t last sixteen years. Today’s JohnKu is about wearing out. I hope you like it. (It may not be just machines)

One day working fine,

Next day a major breakdown . . .

No way to predict.

  2. Impressive lawnmower age. They really don’t make machines to last any more, which is rather frustrating. Seems 2001/2002 were the final years of solid tech being made. Even my iPod from that era lasted 10-12 years before it croaked while my wife went through 3 of them in that same time span.

    1. I agree. I think one of the problems is younger folks get tired of their things and are secretly happy when they need to get a new one. This is the first year I have had a new phone. (I always got the hand me downs) Thanks, Charles. Will catch up with Raven. Was out last night. 🙂

      1. Good point. I think they’re big spenders too, so making stuff that breaks is a way to get more money out of them. The enticement of upgraded stuff is another issue.

  4. Hate it when a favourite bit of kit kicks the bucket – always takeds me ages to ‘bond’ with the replacement! 😛

    1. I know what you mean. This poor thing had been patched and bound for the last five years. Time to let it go. Thanks, Jan. 🙂

  5. Wow, that salt air is killer stuff. Isn’t satisfied with doorbells, going after lawn mowers. 16 years is a good run, John. Maybe you’ll get luck again.

    1. Of course at my age I have to wonder who will outlast whom. In sixteen years I’ll be 91 and can see me pulling the cord and the engine falls off again. 😀

  6. I like the JohnKu 🙂 Sorry to hear about the old lawn mower, but I guess on the plus side far better the mower than something like a car. My husband’s family had a place along the east coast for fifteen years. Love the salt life, but that air is rough!

    1. So true. To say I was surprised is an understatement. Thanks, Mae Clair. 🙂

  7. I love your Friday JohnKu offerings! Built-in obsolescence, hmmm. Perhaps as writers, we’re missing the boat. Our paperbacks should disintegrate, and E-books fizzle on screen after a few years – forcing readers to buy them again!

  10. Sadly, many things aren’t built to last the way they once were (how about light bulbs??) Well, at least your old workhorse gave you many a good year. Probably time for it to retire! Nice JohnKu — enjoy your weekend rest!

  11. Good post, John. I know the feeling. I recently bought a new fridge. The old one was leaking water all over the floor. The new one is great but I don’t know if it’ll last as long Great Friday picture.. 😀 — Suzanne

    1. I have had my troubles with fridges. Seems the more expensive the more trouble.:-)

  12. I’m surprised when most of the things I buy last 15 months, let alone 15 years, John. I bought some fancy (read: expensive) work shoes a few months ago and just took one of them in to get the sole fixed. Happy Friday to ya!

    1. So typical, Phillip. I stopped buying expensive flip-flops for the very same reason. Always some kind of blow out. 🙂

  13. Coastal living can certainly take its toll on machines. The built obsolesce for household machinery seems to be decreasing with time when it should be increasing. Have a good weekend.
