It is that time of the week again when I throw caution to the wind and take part in the Stream of Consciousness Saturday prompt. This week the word is “Novel.” This is a word I know by heart. If you would like to participate, go to Linda Hill’s site and read how. Here is the link https://lindaghill.com/2016/11/04/the-friday-reminder-and-prompt-for-socs-nov-516/
Novel by John W. Howell ©2016
“Is that it?”
“Sure is.”
“Looks smaller than I thought.”
“It is a novel, not a baby.”
“Yeah, I know that. I just pictured it as a bigger book.”
“It is a standard size.”
“Let me hold it.”
“You have clean hands?”
“For heaven’s sake, it’s a novel, not a baby.”
“I just don’t want any smudges on the cover.”
“Yes, my hands are clean.”
“Okay hold your hand under the back cover.”
“You have got to be kidding me. It’s a novel, not a baby.”
“Well, maybe I’m a little fussy. It just may be like a baby to me.”
“Okay, I’ll be careful.”
“Here.”
“My goodness, it’s light.”
“It’s a novel, not a baby.”
“I get that I just thought it would be heavier.”
“Don’t ruffle the pages like that. Hey, don’t bend the pages back so hard.”
“Here take it. it is a baby, not a novel.”
“Thanks. I think it is a novel novel.”
“I believe you need to see someone.”
Novel novels are the best kind….and our babies – precious. 🙂 Well done!

Haha! Perfect prompt for November! “It just may be like a baby to me.” Yepper! I think that describes it for most of us, or at least for any writer worth reading.
Once a friend asked me several probing questions about a character I was writing. “This character is very real to you isn’t he,” she asked. For some reason the question surprised me. I wondered if she was suggesting I had “imaginary friends” or something. Now I wish I had thought to say “If he wasn’t real for me, then how could I make him real for you.”
Thanks for another fun SoC, John. Have a sensational Saturday. Mega hugs.

What a great line. My characters are very real to me and yours show they are real to you as well. I will have to remember that line when someone asks about character realism. Thanks Teagan. Satisfying Saturday to you. 🙂 HUGS

I loved the comparison to a newborn baby – a very novel approach! Sorry, couldn’t resist!

Having read (only 2, sorry) them, I would say that yours are novel novels. Great job with the prompt. So, do you have a public copy of your books for the ham-handed?

Ha ha ha. You ham hand it, you own it. Thanks, Dan 😀

Love the repetition: “It’s a novel, not a baby.” Most effective. Awesome too. 😀

I think its quite novel to be precious about your novel, I’m sure you are John and rightly so in a novel sort of way…

I think it’s perfectly normal to protect new novels. Baby novels or not.
