Wednesday Story Day – AKA Hump Day

Hump Day

It is Wednesday Story day again. Last week we left Alice being warned about having underaged sex with Lucas by Seth Gibson the Sheriff. There seems to be some history between Alice and Seth. If I didn’t know better, I would say they ex-lovers. Anyway, it looks like the sheriff still carries a torch for Alice. I don’t know of another explanation for his rudeness. I figure by now Lucas is finished cleaning his brushes and ready to go with Alice to her place. Let’s go there and find out.
“Okay, Ma— I mean Alice. I’m ready to go.”
“Before we go, Lucas, I need to ask you a question.”
“Sure what is it.”
“How old are you.”
“Now that’s a funny question. What did the sheriff say to you?”
“He read me the riot act about underage sex.”
“What about it?”
“I guess he thinks you are younger than eighteen and he said he would be watching me.”
“My goodness. Is he one of your boyfriends?”
“What makes you ask that?”
“I think he wants to keep you for himself.”
“Naw. He is not a boyfriend. We do have history but not like that.”
“What kind of history?”
“Oh, you don’t need to bother that pretty little head with Seth Gibson nonsense. Maybe some other time I’ll tell you. So how old are you?’
“He must have really got to you. What if I said I was seventeen?”
“That would make me pause to think about what Seth said.”
“Okay, I’m not seventeen. In fact, I’m twenty. Does that make you feel better?”
“Now that you mention it, Lucas, there isn’t much difference between seventeen and twenty is there?”
“What do you mean?”
“Let’s just say I’ve had a bit of a cold shower and need a rain check on a visit to your place.”
“Aw Alice. Don’t let that old coot play with your mind.”
“That’s just it, Lucas.”
“What?”
“Seth and I went to high school together. We’re the same age. I’m going to do some errands. I’ll see you later.”
“Promise?”
“See you later, Lucas.”

  1. An attack of conscience, a realisation that she still has feelings for Seth, or is she suddenly feeling her age? Who knows?

    1. I think the light of day brought her to her senses. “Old coot” is pretty glaring.

  2. I guess Lucas calling Seth an “old coot” made Alice stop and think since they’re the same age. I bet there’s more history there than just Alice and Seth having been classmates. Alice seems not to be the “cougar” she at first desired to be. I’m interested to see how this progresses. Meanwhile, the paint’s drying and still no widow has shown up. 😀 — Suzanne

    1. Yup the widow seems to be the only character we haven’t met. Well let’s hope for her sake all is well. 🙂

  4. So, the sheriff threw a wet blanket on the assignation but Lucas seems more game now than before. Is that because he knows nothing will happen now I wonder.

  5. Nice twist. Probably for the best since Lucas has enough on his plate. That house won’t paint itself and I still think he’s hiding something.

    1. It seems that way to me as well. Where the heck is the widow anyway?

      1. Disruptive? I haven’t heard that genre before. Maybe you’re inventing it. Or maybe you’re deceiving me now…

  7. Charles thinks Lucas is hiding something? I think this whole damn town is hiding something, It’s like Lucas walked into a soap opera and he’s the new leading man. I almost want to turn away, but it’s like the proverbial train wreck – I just can’t.

    1. Don’t turn away just yet. There will be plenty of occasions to run screaming from the room. Thanks, Dan 😀

  10. “Old Coot.” Oops! Lucas stuck his foot in his mouth with that one.
And quite suddenly the prey becomes predator. Interesting switch up between Lucas and Alice!

  11. Oh! Now that was unexpected from Alice, and I do not get the feeling she is playing hard to get. I don’t know what to think. Hmmmmm…. Thanks for another wonderful Wednesday lunch break, John. Mega hugs.

    1. I have to keep tossing it up (you know that). You clever folks will figure things out too quickly if I don’t. Glad you like it. Hugs back. I think you have a little mustard on your lip. Yes right there.

  15. ‘Old coot’ works faster than a cold shower. The widows absence continues to intrigue me, just what do you have up that clever sleeve of yours, John. C’mon, the suspense is killing me …

  16. Lucas is a sly one. He might be seventeen after all and still lied about his age. He wasn’t keen on Alice’s proposition or was it a proposal? I can never keep these straight. 😀 😀 😀 Whatever changed Alice’s mind–where the heck is the widda?

    1. I think Alice saw how foolish she was being. The widda? Your guess is as good as mine.

  21. Oh dear! The words “old coot” must have been like a blade through the heart given that Alice went to school with the Sheriff! Of course, she may have some other motive too. I don’t really trust anybody in this story, which I guess is the idea!
