Wednesday Story Day – AKA – Hump Day

Hump Day

It is Wednesday Story Day time again, and last week we left Lucas and the Sheriff as they were finishing up a chat about Lucas’ past. We need to get back to the widow’s house since I see her coming out onto the porch.
“Oh, Lucas.”
“Yes, ma’am.”
“Do you need some water?”
“No Ma’am I have some.”
“Okay just let me know if your out.”
“I will ma’am.”
“I still prefer Harriet.”
“Yes, Miss Harriet. I will call you if I need more water.”
“Good boy. What did you and the Sheriff talk about?”
“Oh, he just wanted to fill me in on what he knew about my parent’s case.”
“Did he know a lot?”
“He didn’t tell you?”
“Well no not everything.”
“What did he tell you.”
“Um, just about the fact that your parents were murdered. I’m so sorry Lucas.”
“Didn’t he warn you to watch out.”
“He did mention something like that.”
“Aren’t you afraid?”
“Of you. Goodness no.”
“Why’s that Miss Harriet.”
“I think you are someone who needs a friend and are not a murderer.”
“You are the only one in the two state area that thinks so, Miss Harriet.”
“The heck with them, Lucas. I can see you are a good boy. A little scary, but a good boy.”
“Scary how?”
“It is hard to describe. Maybe it is your personality or your lack of emotion. I can’t really tell.”
“Do I scare you?”
“Not really. You cause me concern is all.”
“What kind of concern?”
“That you have been through so much and that you don’t somehow get crazy.”
“The ‘somehow crazy’ is a concern of mine as well. Well, I’d better get back to work.”
“Okay, Lucas. Call me if you need anything at all.”
“I will and Miss Harriet.”
“Yes, Lucas.”
“Thank you for being so kind.”
“Not at all, Lucas. I like you.”

  1. This is becoming peculiar. I’m not so sure I’d trust Lucas so much. A good installment, John. Funny meme at the top. 😀 — Suzanne

Gosh, this episode prompts thoughts of Norman Bates…and, well, craziness. We’ve entered the Twilight Zone I fear. 🙂

  3. I do hope she won’t regret her attitude toward Lucas (although it would make for an interesting story if she did…)

    1. Ha ha ha. I have a feeling about this. Not good either.

      1. In this crazy, mixed-up world we inhabit (where bad and wicked are compliments), not good can be very good; very good indeed.

  5. Oh, Miss Harriet, I’m not sure you have a good view of the situation. Lucas might be a lot of things, but trustworthy isn’t one of them.

  6. That was sweet. I’ve been wondering about these stories. Do you have them planned beforehand to some extent or are they totally off the cuff?

    1. Off the cuff. I pretty much rely on the characters. I have little blocks of where I want the thing to go and I do know the ending but thats about it. I sit down and pretty much write a line and then follow the sequence. Thanks for asking.

      1. Cool. I was wondering about the ending since the last one came together so nicely.

      2. I usually write the last three lines before I start. Then work to get there.

  12. I went back and read last week’s episode first, since I’ve been away on vacation, then caught up with this. I feel like a yo-yo were Lucas is concerned. One moment I’m sure he’s hiding something and the next I end up rethinking that thought. All I can do is hang on and go along for the ride. Entertaining and mysterious as always, John!

  14. Hmmm… I have to agree with Suzanne about “peculiar,” John. So Lucas is on the scary side, huh? Well, as long as he doesn’t have delusions of being John Belushi’s samurai, or of hitting it rich-for-life by finding a huge load of drugs just floating in the ocean — then he might still be alright. 😀 (Make you wonder what kind of crazy I’ve encountered?) o_O
Thanks for another wonderful Wednesday lunch break, my friend. Mega hugs.

  15. Miss Harriet seems more trusting than I’d be (she probably has a rifle tucked inside and isn’t one bit afraid to use it, ha!)

  16. Hum…withholding judgment of Lucas for now, but will read with a healthy dose of caution regarding him, and Miss Harriet’s trust factor.

Looking forward to the next installment.

  18. Interesting that you write the last three lines first! I usually have to begin at the start though I know what I want the ending to be, I don’t have it figured out to the exact detail.
