I have a few photos that don’t really have a home on the Views of the Neighborhood post so like last week I thought I would just run them for no real reason other than I like them. I hope you do as well.
The first is a morning shot of the Gulf. I liked the way the sun reflection made the water appear to be made of Mercury and the clouds like steel.
The next photo is of the ARK turtle patrol. The volunteers travel the length of the island searching for nesting turtles. When found the eggs are gathered and hatched in a nursery. The baby turtles are then released when thy are older enough. These efforts have saved Loggerhead turtles from extinction.
The next series are of various sand drawings left by visitors to the beach.
A horse of course.
A self-critique of the artwork
Must have a mermaid
A dentist on Holiday
So where are we? And what year is it?
That is about it.
Nice collection of pictures, John. It’s great they’re saving the turtles from extinction. 🙂 — Suzanne

So true. The odds against a baby turtle are astronomical. They say one in a hundred grows to adulthood. (The turtles lay about 80 eggs at a time)

Great photos, John. The first photo looks like an oil painting – very beautiful. And, my next favorite is the ARK patrol – maybe a story about this someday? 🙂

Very cool about the turtle eggs. How easy is it to find the nests?

Not too easy. The best way is to catch the mama digging her nest. They then toss a long ribbon into it and then let her complete the burying sequence. Once she is tagged and given a physical exam she is sent back to the Gulf. The ribbon marks the eggs which the volunteers carefully follow and dig them up. The eggs are packed in a cooler which keeps them warm until they get to the incubator.

Definitely sounds difficult. Depends a lot on being in the right place at the right time. Interesting how she won’t react to the ribbon being tossed in.

Kudos to the guys working for the turtles. I hope they’re not at loggerheads with any other residents.

Love the photos, and the background on the turtles. I just left the beach in Cancun and seeing these snaps makes me want to be seaside again 🙂

How lucky you are to live with this view as your backdrop! Love that the eggs are transported to ensure the best possible chance of survival.

Nice photos. I’m picturing John Cannon running across the beach to get away from bad guys. You described the surroundings very well in your series.

I always love your photo’s and you don’t have to have a reason of sharing them. It’s what you like and we like them too obviously! Hope you’re doing well John. I’ve had no time to write posts lately just the usual Mullet Monday’s and Hump Day stuff – Life is so busy! Happy Saturday my friend!
