“So Boss. What are we doing up at 5:00?”
“I’m surprised you know the time.”
“Twelve hours since dinner. It’s not tough. What are we doing?”
“We need to drive two and a half hours to the vet. Let’s go.”
“Why can’t we go to the one near here?”
“Because you need your teeth cleaned and our Vet in San Antonio is the best.”
“I like the car, but that’s a long way.”
“Lay down, and we’ll be there before you know it.”
“Thanks for bringing my blanket, Boss.”
“You’re welcome. Now take a snooze. I’ll wake you later.”
“What’s up Boss?”
“A little traffic, Lucy.”
“What is traffic?”
“We are getting close to San Antonio, and people are going to work.”
“Wow, it’s raining too. Look at those cars. Why aren’t we moving?”
“It could be an accident. At the least, the rain is slowing people down.”
“Shouldn’t you stop and wipe off the glass, Boss?”
“We have wipers for that Lucy. Look.”
“Ah yes. They move fast don’t they?”
“This is exciting, Boss. I’ve never seen so many humans.”
“Well, you did when you were young. You were born here in San Antonio.”
“I was? I don’t remember.”
“I’m glad you don’t, Lucy.”
“What is that noise, Boss?”
“There are other pups in the vet’s office.”
“I think My favorite doctor is out there.”
“Yes, he is.”
“I think I will jump up on him.”
“I’m not sure he will like that.”
“How will he know I’m glad to see him?”
“You could give him a shimmy.”
“I’m happy to report that the visit was very successful. Lucy has all her shots, a complete physical, and her teeth cleaned. She did need three teeth pulled because she doesn’t brush as often as she should.”
“I right here. You know that don’t you Boss?”
“Yes I know it Lucy and I’m so glad you are. It was a full day and now it is time to relax.”
“Night Boss.”
“Night Lucy. Sleep well.”
“I think the dope will make that happen Boss. Thanks for that too.”
Sounds like she had a big adventure. Agree with her about the long drive. That’s a doozy.

That’s a long way to go for the vet. I’m so glad ours is only about twenty minutes away. It’s always a worry when dogs reach the age where dental work becomes necessary – Trevor is close to there now (and he’s showing signs of arthritis). I hope Lucy came out of the anaesthetic okay and is back to her old self.

It does take time. She is still a little confused today but getting better.

She should be okay by day’s end, John. Give her a {insert whatever you use as a reward} for me.

You have to trust your vet. I used to have one that did it all. The time I walked in on him doing teeth braces on a mastiff had me in stitches though. Glad Lucy came through it all A-OK.

I love her expression in the car, John. She’s such a sweetie. I’m glad she came through all of that in good order. Your a good human, John – I think you should get a treat. Biscuit? Bourbon? It’s your choice.
I’ll be visiting the city of Lucy’s birth, in the spring. Tell her it feels a little more special now.

Great story, John. Gotta figure out this “Press This” button. Why do they have to complicate things???

Not sure either. I have no idea how that thing works or where it goes. 🙂

As soon as I saw that, I checked my own posts and saw that the “Reblog” button is gone from them too. I clicked on “Press This” and couldn’t figure out what I had to do – the Title area was blank. Have to visit WordPress.com and find out. Sigh…

Been putting off a tooth-cleaning for Dallas as Shelties don’t usually handle that well. Glad Lucy’s checkup was a breeze and that you had a safe journey. Good that she’s such a compliant passenger — guess the dope on the return jaunt didn’t hurt!

Wonderful post, and she got to have an adventure with Dad all to herself. My old English setter had bad teeth and lost quite a few in her lifetime. Some are just more prone to it.

Mine are too young to know whether they will have teeth issues. Hope not.

If you can start brushing it is a good thing. I’m sure bull dogs are like Boxers. Anything in the mouth is meant to be broken in two.

That’s what happens. The little finger brush leads to a crunched finger. The other kind of toothbrush works.

Aww, she looks all tuckered out. She had a long day with lots of excitement. I bet she slept really good, sweet girl.

She slept like a rock. Poor thing was staggering out of the vet’s office and then slept most of the way home. She is eating and drinking which is a good sign.

Awww! Poor Lucy having three teeth pulled, John. You need to clean them for her. Then you can write a post about 10 things not to do when you clean your pets teeth (hahaha).

Glad it all worked out for Lucy, John. My dogs get teeth cleaning every year. You don’t know what teeth are loose or infected until then. Also the blood work needed is important as dogs get older. Yep, they are like children! 🐶 Christine

The dreaded teeth cleaning appointment. Glad it all worked out, but too bad about the three teeth. We have a kitty with almost no teeth now, but she just gets the “special” food now and seems to like it.

I have a cat who’s affectionately known at the vet’s as “that demon cat.” She should take some lessons from Lucy. A little “special medicine” before she goes keeps her from drawing blood herself — if I can get it in her. As they age, they can react differently to anesthetic, and recover more slowly. I’m glad Lucy’s doing well — and I hope your vet’s on the south side of SA! 🙂

Unfortunately the vet is in the Deerfield area. Not too far North but North. Thanks, Linda. Lucy is doing better today.
