Wednesday Story Day – AKA – Hump Day

Hump day

It is Wednesday Story Day again, and last week we were present at a discussion Sheriff Seth Gibson and the Private eye Frank Plano. According to the Sheriff, he left the Severides house before they were killed. He denied killing them. We also got some information on why the sheriff thinks Lucas’ story about what happened the night of the Severide’s murder is not the whole truth. Most of us doubt the sheriff’s motivations since he seems focused on proving Lucas as the murderer. Well, I see the sheriff and Frank are continuing to talk, so I guess the coffee break is over for now.

“You say you didn’t kill them, sheriff but Alice says you were there and can’t tell me when you left. I could argue that your story is a matter of who do you believe.”
“You have to be kidding me. Alice was so looped in those days I doubt she could even remember seeing me there. Anyone else see me?”
“No. Mrs. Murphy was there but was busy taking care of Alice. Also, they left a short time after Alice said she saw you.”
“Look at the facts, Frank. Alice was a drug user. She says she saw me. Who cares? I already said I was there. When I left the Saverides were alive.”
“I still have to wonder why you’ve been, so hell-bent to get Lucas to confess.”
“For the very reasons, I pointed out. His story has holes in it that the Chief in Kenosha refuses to acknowledge. I’m a lawman, Frank. I want to see Lucas punished for his crime.”
“If he is guilty I would like the same. You have to realize this whole case is not within your jurisdiction.”
“Sadly I know that. This is why I need Lucas to confess. None of the idiots in Kenosha are going to do anything.”
“There is just one more thing, Sheriff.”
“What’s that?”
“What if Lucas didn’t do it?”
“I don’t believe that.”
“But what if it is true. Do you have another suspect?”
“No. I don’t.”
“Right. I don’t think Lucas is going to confess because I don’t think he’s guilty.”
“What makes you so sure?”
“I have a suspicion about someone else.”
“Do tell.”
“I have no proof, but it shouldn’t be too hard to get it. You want to help?”
“Tell me who you suspect, and I’ll help if it makes sense.”
“Give me a day.”

  1. OMG, you’ve done it again. Here we are on a girder half a mile up and you left us hanging again. We’ll have to sit here and have lunch. Why is that man taking so many photographs and talking about posters?

  2. That’s theory number eighty-five down the drain. I’d best get numbers eight-six to ninety out and dust them off. Who knows? One of them might just be right.

Hmm, where’s the DNA evidence when we need it? I couldn’t help but think of Stephen King’s comment about writers being secret agents. You fit that role to a T, and we bystanders get to enjoy the experience. 🙂

  9. “If you thought this episode was going to bring clarity, you were sadly mistaken…”

Well, not sad, I mean it’s good, but a big part of me wants to shake the tree you’re living in , John. Another twist. Another cliff. If you weren’t so good at this I’d be angry. Actually, I have a sneaky suspicion that I know where this is going. Yes, I know, I’m doomed.

I need to get back to work on that time machine. Has anybody seen my flux capacitor?

Okay . . but here’s the unfair part. His ‘day’ is OUR week. . . 🙂

But I’ll give you a pass since you’re so talented and clever.

  12. I like how the plot is thickening. I didn’t think the sheriff would be willing to help. Perhaps he wants justice more than he wants Lucas. Now, who does Frank suspect? I’ll be hanging on a limb waiting to find out till next Wednesday!

  15. Is this mystery to become a tome, with your RRBC & RWISA friends all sitting here this time next year?

If so, I’m forming a lynch mob!

    You’re on notice, HowellWave!

Okay, I admit, I came in late, really like your story and your genius, but you have my mind wrapped up with ‘Who Killed the Severides’? And, your story is creeping over into my new book… So, come on, are these guys amateurs? Bailey Crane would have this business all wrapped up by now.

You’re a SADIST, HowellWave, a lovable one, but, nonetheless, a SADIST!

To whomever might read these words, forgive my self-serving remarks… I’m just a wee bit jealous of this guy’s writing ability – and his putting all these thoughts in my head…

(Have I said enough, John? You told me to shake your ‘Hump Day’ story up a bit… Is this what you meant? I did get in the words, ‘genius’, ‘lovable’, and, ‘jealous of your writing ability’. Did I do okay? Were my comments long enough? I proofed it very carefully and used the disappearing drops you sent me on this parenthetical ‘thing’. I just worry, John, that, sometimes, I can be a little long in my comments. Can you reassure me?)
