Friday – JohnKu – AKA – TGIF

Twiggy

“Hey, Dad. We doing this screened porch project or not?”

Friday is here, and for all who must carry the yoke of employment, there are only about eight hours in this work week. Since you have come this far, you can certainly make it to the finish. At least it is hoped.

I made some progress on the WIP which is always a good thing. The rest of the projects for the week were pretty much around keeping up with the blog, e-mails and some projects around the house.

I find when working on projects, the idea is to set a goal much like I do with writing. One such project is cleaning the last of the hurricane debris out of the screens on the porch. I have twelve panels that have to be removed from their frames, cleaned and replaced. The structures then need to be painted where necessary and everything put back.

So rather than try to do them all in a day (about 12 hours) which would mean a total loss of a writing day, I decided to do one per. In this way, twelve days and the entire job will be done. I have to admit it does take a little negotiating to make sure the time frame is in keeping with the head of the house. Happy to say, it is. Today’s JohnKu talks about the demands of time.

This to do and that,

Trying to find enough time . . .

Need to allocate.

  2. A lovely haiku, John. Time remains a problem for everyone, there are only so many hours in a day and 8 less when you work for your own stuff.

It’s amazing how time can disappear when we need it the most. All the best to you as you try to finish the tasks at hand. Hope you and yours have a great weekend. 🙂

  6. Projects go much better with an achievable goal, each day. That’s my approach with our projects this summer.

From the picture, it looks like you answer to a few bosses.

  7. As I often remind myself, I have all the time there is. The only question is, how will I make use of it? And will I be flexible enough to leave some wiggle room for all those necessities and joys I never anticipated?

    1. The constant battle between what I need to do vs what I want to do. Thanks, Linda.

  8. I do that too – break a big project into smaller chunks. Works better for me. And Jill’s right – Twiggy looks like an eager helper.

  9. The joys of time allocation. We should petition to add 3 hours to each day. They can’t be used for the rat race though. Either hobbies, sleep, family time, or house chores. 🙂

      2. Then we would be rushed to finish everything in four.

      3. True. Though, it’s supposed to be a 10-hour work day 4 days a week to cover everything. I still don’t know how it could work without altering school schedules or making it possible for more stay-at-home parents.

      4. Never work. Bosses would still ask people to come in on the 5th day.

  11. That sounds like a reasonable solution, John. I admire your persistence — too often, we sacrifice the writing for the To-Do list (or for chasing baubles that tempt our procrastination!). Happy Friday to you and the gang!

    1. I do the same with my writing. 1,000 words a day on the WIP. No more no less. (90 to 120 days a first draft.) Thanks, Craig

  21. Allocating is never easy, John. Good on you, for trying! I’ve been allocated just 20 minutes at a time on the computer (as I heal from a concussion) and I am NOT a good girl, often. 20 minutes – one can barely get two paragraphs in with 20 minutes. Haha. Happy Friday, happy weekend.
