It is Stream of Consciousness Saturday time again and this weeks prompt is “earworm.” Yup, you read that right, earworm. Linda Hills says we can write about our latest earworm or one that continually haunts us. If you would like to join in the madness, go to Linda’s blog and read about how easy it is to slip off the edge. “Good evening ladies and gentlemen and welcome to NPR’s People Feature of the Week. I’m Alex Silverton. This week we are featuring some special guests who claim to have an earworm of special note. Now for those in our audience who are unfamiliar with the term “earworm,” here is Lexis Brominowski to give us some background.”
“Thank you, Alex. An earworm is that annoying song that gets stuck in your ear and is very difficult to shake. An example is Mary had a Little Lamb. Once you hear the song, it is difficult to stop it from rolling around in your head.”
“Thank you, Lexis. Our first guest comes to us from Buford Montana and claims to have an earworm. Tell us your name and the nature of the earworm.”
“Hello, my name is Ralph Dunson, and my earworm is Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony.”
“Oh, you mean pieces of the symphony?”
“No the whole thing. From the first dum de dum to the last ta ra.”
My goodness, how do you concentrate on anything else?”
“Huh? My goodness, it’s hard. Hold on the second movement is just starting.”
“Okay, Ralph. We are going to cut over to Tillis Wentworth who says her earworm is the Gettysburg Address. How is this possible Ms. Wentworth?”
“You tell me, Alex. I was minding my own business, and one morning I got up, and there it was.”
“Who is speaking the address?”
“You’re kidding right?”
“Don’t tell me it’s Lincoln.”
“It’s not Lincoln. I think it is James Earl Jones.”
“How long has it been since you have had this earworm?”
“Hmmm. It might have started when I went to Disneyland.”
“Thank you, Ms. Wentworth. Now our last guest, Max Sanders claims to have an earworm that is of a strange alien radio broadcast. Tell us about this, Mr. Sanders.”
“Not much to tell. My every waking hour is taken up by this broadcast of news from outer space.”
“Can you identify the station?”
“Well like I told the FBI it sounds like it is from another planet.”
“What makes you say this?”
“Some of the people who are interviewed cannot be from this Earth.”
“Any names jump out at you.”
“There have only been a few.”
“Like who?”
“No one I have ever heard of for sure.”
“For instance?”
“The Kardashians and Kanye West.”
“I hate to tell you this, Mr. Sanders but I think you might be receiving CNN.”
“Yeah that’s what the Feds told me, but you know how those people try to cover stuff up.”
“I can see by the clock that we have just about run out of time. I want to thank our guests and look forward to next week’s show.”
“Mr. Silverton?”
“Yes, Mr. Sanders.’
“I just heard a broadcast describing that your show is canceled.”
“That would be too kind, Mr. Sanders. Too kind indeed.”
Never heard of an Earworm before, John, so I’ve been educated as well as entertained! Love what you came up with this week. Have a great weekend 😊

LOL. I never heard of an earworm until your blog, John, and I have to say, the last two lines are priceless. They are definitely trademark Howell perfect. Have a great day! 🙂

I have to admit, secretly I hope the Kardashians are aliens. Nice job with the prompt, John. This sounds like a good NPR weekend show.

I think I’m more shocked by the number of your readers who’ve never heard of an earworm, much less experienced one, than I am tickled.at this post!

Ever since I spent a winter in Port Aransas, I have had an earworm for KBSO “94.7 The Rig”, that wonderful, uniquely Texas Coast radio station.
I don’t know if they are still blasting Texas Country music, but the sound still echoes in my truck cab.

It is still there. You might be able to pick it up via computer. they have a Facebook page.

The minute I saw this prompt, I knew I was in for some entertainment and you did not disappoint. 🙂 I never knew what it was called, but I suffer from earworms often. Many times I awake in the middle of the night with a song running through my head. Now I have a name to put on this discomforting issue. Good one, John!

John,
I have a daily earworm, depending on what my dig is. I ain’t complaining though, since it keeps the voices in my head company.
Hilarious jaunt, good sir!

Yeah, I have names for them. There’s Nixon, Santiago, Winnie, Ali and then there’s . . . oh wait . . hold up. Did I write this out loud?

Nixon sounds like the comedian Andy Dick, because I am ALL about the irony.

I’ve gotten earworms my entire life. I was familiar with the term too. Sometimes a bit of music gets wedged in there, and it’s like, “The song that doesn’t end. It just goes on and on my friend…”

Ha! A fun and unexpected take on the prompt, John. Mary had a little lamb would be preferable right now… a darned TV show has put “Tomorrow” in my head… and getting rid of that ear worm is at least a day away! Hugs.

LOL! The Kardashians and Kanye West as aliens. Hahahahaha! I’d had an earworm for a week yesterday, but can’t name or ID the song to hear the next line and cure it, so last night I played a whole bunch of duets hoping to either a) find the song and cure my earworm, or b) create a new earworm that at least I could Identify and cure in a hurry. 🎶😉🎵
Success no more earworm! I couldn’t find the song that started that earworm though.
Great writing for the prompt John!

This was really funny, John. I think Silverton is relieved. 🙂 I get earworms all the time, although more like Mary Had a Little Lamb than Beethoven.
