Views of the Neighborhood – Fishing in Port A

I have to admit the activity list was a little sparse this week. There was one event worth noting. It was the Hook ’em and Book ’em Bay and Surf Fishing Tournament. This one benefits the Port Aransas Police Foundation and the Police Department.

Here is a shot of the trophies for the winners.

There is also a sponsor list.

At first, I thought maybe I could win a police pick-up truck, but found out it was a display only.

This tournament has fisher folks out in the bays and along the beaches. The participants were not due back until way later, and I had a Kansas and WVU football game to watch, so I thought I would take some photos of people fishing off the piers at Robert’s Point Park.

Here is a person contemplating the best time to throw the bait net.

  1. Oil rigs right offshore ruin the whole scene I’m afraid (IMO) They’re a lot closer than I imagined.

    1. Those are mothballed rigs. That is a storage island for them. I agree about the visual eye sore but not much can be done. In fact most of us don’t even see them anymore. Thanks, GP.

Rain clouds are still in sight but some took their chances and braved the weather. Hope today is sunny for you and yours. 🙂

  3. Thanks for the look around, John – great pictures. I have to remind myself that fishing is a quiet sport. I might have tossed in a line to get the pickup.

In that last picture, is the washed out area behind the wall courtesy of Harvey?

I was also watching that game. It felt good to like the result of a football game.

    1. Yes, Dan that is a washed out area because of Harvey. Super scoreon the WVU games. I enjoyed the whole thing.

I loved the ‘hook em and book em’. I thought they were snow domes, but they were trophies. Maybe you could put that in for a suggestion for next year, John.

    1. Nice snow domes would be good in the heat. Thaks, Melissa.

  8. Good morning, John,
When we were down there in Port A. a few weeks ago, we were saddened to see that two fishing piers [one near Cline’s Landing and one at Robert’s Point Park] were still totally gone. 😦
Oh, and we noticed that the viweing tower at the park was still closed, even if it didn’t look damaged.
    Have a wonderful day,
    Pit

    1. Yes. I stopped baiting my hook so I wouldn’t be inturrupted in my thoughts.

      1. I said that to myself the day I stopped baiting the hook. Those twenty pound red snappers can be a pain.

  13. John,

I took one look at that police pick up truck and thought the same thing as you . . . Of course, we would ONLY use it do good. But hey, in the event we’re late for dinner and we’ve got to clear the road . . is that really such a bad thing?

    Thanks for the tour, Boss.

  15. It was fun to see the dad and kids doing something together. Thanks for a relaxing stroll, John.
My “fishing line” got a bite in Albuquerque… but it wasn’t the job I applied for, and the guy was not being straight with me. Hard to consider moving all the way across the country with that in mind. But we’ll see what they come back with — if anything.

Too bad about the pickup truck. 😉 Hugs.

      1. I loved ABQ, but it’s different now. I’d love to get to a sleepy little town somewhere… too bad the jobs are also sleeping in little towns. Cheers.

  20. Heaven knows there are plenty of big-time fishing tournaments around here, but I do enjoy seeing some of these smaller/more local ones. It’s especially good to see the kids taking part, learning some skills and having some fun.
