Thursday – A Little Personal – On the Beach

Twiggy, Lucy, and Bailey

“Lucy what are you doing?”

“Look to your right, little one.”

“What is that?”

“It is a big bird called a heron.”

“Can we chase it?”

“OMG no. The boss has a fit. He thinks the birds ought to be left alone.”

“I can certainly understand that. He’s a softy for animals.”

“Not so loud he’s right behind us.”

“You don’t suppose he understands dog do you?”

“Comes pretty close.”

Twiggy and Lucy

“What are we doing now?”

“This is a gopher mound. We dig in it like Idiots hoping t catch a gopher.”

“Do we?”

“Never.”

“Why you stopping?”

“Look there is a signpost up ahead.”

“With another heron.”

“Man you learn fast. nice job.”

“Will that heron fly off there?”

“Of course. When he gets hungry.”

“We should go there and wait.”

“Remember what I said about the boss?”

“I remember. Maybe I’ll just hunt for seashells.”

“Yeah, there may be some around here. The boss wants us back to the golf cart.”

“Hey Lucy, look. A dog on a leash.”

“Yeah, that is pretty common.”

“I’ll give him my pit bull bark.”

“You do that. I’m sure he is quivering in the sand.”

“Now my mountain lion face.”

“Be careful. Your face may freeze like that. I’m sure glad the boss is back. We are heading home.”

“How was the beach, Little stuff.”

“It was great. I got to dig in a gopher mound.” What is Lucy looking at?”

“Oh, she does that whenever the dog across the street starts barking.”

“Why does she do it?”

“She says she is giving that dog a greedy look in her brain. It is supposed to stop the barking.”

“Obviously doesn’t work. We missed you at the beach.”

“Thank, little stuff. Someday I’ll play on the beach all day.”

What a fun excursion! I suspect you do understand dog language, and they seem to understand you as well. I envy your warm weather, John. To walk on the beach in the winter is a bit of heaven. 🙂

  2. I LOVE Twiggy’s mountain lion face. Of course, I love all her faces. The many faces of Twiggy . . .

    Hugs to the bunch.

  5. Fun, funny and sad. You’ve got life on a leash there, John. I’m glad you don’t let them chase the birds. We have that talk with Maddie nearly every day. Birds that winter here like to rest in the evergreen yews. Maddie always wants to flush them out (like I’m going to shoot them and cook a meal of sparrow).

    1. Ha haha. She was bred for birding. You have a whale of DNA to become accustumed to. To her a sparrow is a designer pheasant. 😀

      1. Of all the setters we’ve had, she has the strongest hunting instinct. Setters are known for their ability to sneak up on birds. They move very quietly and slowly – you almost don’t see them moving. A male that we had many years ago would do that. We’d clap our hands if he got too close. The bird would fly and he’d look at us like we were idiots.

  6. Twiggy’s mountain lion face cracked me up. These two are literally meant for each other. But, that last line from Bailey brought a literal tear to my eye. What lucky animals to be so loved!

  9. Twiggy’s ” mountain lion face” is hysterical!
I enjoyed the excursion and hearing that the boss is “a softy for animals.”
Hoping Bailey is well enough to join in the beach jaunts again soon. Happy Thursday, John!

  10. The last line has me choking up, so I’m opting to focus on earlier ones. Mountain lion face is hilarious. So is Lucy telling Twiggy that she’s sure the other dog is quivering in the sand. Your dialogue and pictures are, as always, brilliant.

  14. LOL. Thanks for a delightful lunch-break with the girls, John. I’m inviting Lucy over to give the barking dog on the other side of my wall “a greedy look in her brain… to stop the barking.”

Lovely morning views of the beach. It looks so peaceful today. Hugs on the wing.

  21. That stretch of empty sand looks wonderful, and it’s good to see that pair enjoying it. The first photo cracked me up — they do have a way about them. I hope all three will have a chance to enjoy the beach together. It seems as though we might actually have a decent December, with a brief respite from the nasty weather that’s already shown up. I hope so!
