Friday JohnKu – AKA – TGIF

“Twiggy. It’s Friday.”
“Step aside, Lucy. Let’s Boogie”

It is Friday again and looks like the country is in for another Polar Vortex. Man those things are nasty. I’m often asked how our weather fares when it gets so cold up North. Although we generally don’t get below 35 degrees, we do feel the temperatures at that level. The good part is the temperatures do not stay at those lows too long. Maybe one or two nights. The daytime under those conditions is in the ’50s. You can bet we have our warm weather gear on when it seems to us to be very chilly.

All n all we are very spoiled when it comes to temperatures. Our climate is such that it seldom gets above 85 degrees, so the summers are not as hot as inland. The only time the temperatures rise is when the Gulf temperature goes into the ’90s. Our air temperatures pretty much match the Gulf.

Well so much for talking about the weather. All else is fine and today’s JohnKu discusses what we talk about when there doesn’t seem to be any news. Have a great weekend.

The Weather by John W. Howell © 2019

We’ve said everything,

Embarrassed at the silence . . .

We talk of weather.

  1. It’s funny how people fill the silence by talking about weather, isn’t it? I call my 93 year old aunt every evening and the first thing she tells me is the temperature where she lives. 🙂 Happy Friday, John…it’s been a long week, but we had temps in the 70’s, so I can’t complain.

  2. I just wish the weather was consistent here. Freezing to lukewarm and back again in the same week is crazy.

  5. Why not… I’m colder places ppl talk about weather all time. This is also exactly what I do when I see my neighbors 😂😂

    1. I love the ones that start when you are standing in a cold rain and someone says, “You know it’s not the heat but the humidity.” 😀

  8. Weather talk is a sign of tedium in a relationship, it’s true, especially if it happens during coitus.
    But I wouldn’t know anything about that…

By the way, did you get my DM on Twitter, John?

With my family on both the East and West coasts, I hear a lot about weather. You’re right, when we don’t know what to say, weather rescues us. 😀 Excellent observation!

  11. There’s a chance (minimal, slight, nearly impossible) that there will be sleet north of Houston today. Maybe even a flake or two of snow could show up. I laughed when I read the NWS discussion attached to the daily briefing and saw those possibilities described as “conversational.”

    1. I like that. Thanks, Linda. “And now our weather report.” “Thank you Lance. Today’s weather looks to be conversational with a chance of debate. Tonight may be contextual with a slght chance of sullen. After the break I’ll have your seven day forecast.”

  12. Boss,

There’s a way in which you can talk about the weather sans boredom. I’ve developed a process which includes music, witty repartee and clever historical tidbits. And friendly drinks.

That last part is uber important. It makes all the difference. You can forget any of the other steps but not that last step. Ever.

    Love the haiku.

  13. We are now under flood watches – big melt thanks to the 50’s we hit in the NW Burbs and rain. Then last night – nasty wind gusts and 4 degrees with a’feels like -14 with the wind chill…..and I wonder why I have battling a mega headache. No snowshoeing, maybe running with metal cleats – or I am thinking couching!

  14. Weather is also the first thing people talk about when they meet someone new for the first time. Maybe it’s because everyone has an opinion about it, but nothing about it is controversial. It’s always the “safe” topic!

Your weather sounds divine. What a fabulous place to live!

  15. As usual, I love the dog pics. And this John-Ku was funny. No need to be embarrassed. Weather can be an interesting topic. I didn’t realize your summers didn’t get too hot. I’m currently farther north than you (in Arkansas) and our winters are usually mild, but our summers can be miserable. Although, we did have snow yesterday. Stupid polar vortex…

    Happy weekend, John.

  17. You know, 40 degrees in the south can be mighty cold, John. There’s something about the dampness that makes it feel miserable. Of course, even “dry heat” is still heat, right?!?

    1. Heat be heat. Cold be cold. I remember being in Minnasota and a guy said this is dry cold. It was 16 degrees below zero. Dry or wet it was cold.

It’s good when we only have the weather to talk about unless the weather is the news. We have a week of snow ahead for us, or a normal winter week. Its been a while since normal been the case in CA, though. I’m ready for a snowday or two. Have a great weekend.

    1. When I lived in the SF area, I could not believe the amount of rain in the winter. I finally asked my next door neighbor when it was going to stop and he said, “April.” It did. Not another drop until October. That was normal.

You are right about that being normal. I grew up in the Bay Area and was used to that. Snow is still new to me, so I enjoy it:)

  22. In all fairness, talking about the weather brings people together – much easier than politics ever could 😉 !
And we can bitch and moan for whatever Mama Nature is handing out over each part of the world. ‘Course, some of us won’t feel so sorry for others, you understand. That said, it doesn’t diminish the love we feel for those more or less fortunate 🙂
Excellent Haiku to bring us towards the weekend.

  23. The Northern Hemisphere freezes, and here in Australia, we are in the midst of record-breaking summer-heat. Far North Queensland is dealing with debilitating floods and Tasmania is being ravaged by fire. Methinks the weather may be presenting us with “An Inconvenient Truth.” Great Haiku, my friend.

  24. It beats talking about politics. We had a few days in the upper 40ºs here in south FL last week and you would think it was “The Day After Tomorrow” the way people were acting. https://youtu.be/Ku_IseK3xTc

  25. The weather is something we all have in common, so why not talk about it? We didn’t get above freezing in Dallas today and they are predicting some precipitation overnight. Not my favorite thing, but it will be short-lived. As the famous quote goes, “It is what it is.” Good post, John!
