We are now at our new home in the Austin area. Lucy and Twiggy are adapting quite well. There are some differences, but I’ll let them explain.
“Lucy. What are all these little crispy things on the ground?”
“Leaves, Little Potato. The trees around here shed in the winter.”
“I think walking on the road is harder than the sand. Where is the sand?”
“We don’t have a beach here, Little One.”
“How come I smell water then?”
“Yeah, I smell it too. Let’s go a little further.”
“Twiggy look. Do you see what I see?”
“I’m still wondering about those bushes I saw move.”
“Look over here, Twiggy.”
“Wow. That is water.”
“Do you suppose there is a beach there?”
“I don’t know. Hey Boss. Any beaches around here?”
“We’ll have to explore, Lucy. I really don’t know.”
“Lucy look. A person in a truck.”
“Calm down, Twiggy. You’ve seen them before.”
“Now here is something you haven’t seen before. A yard full of deer.”
“OMG, Lucy. They are huge. Can we chase them?”
“What? And drag the boss behind you. I don’t think so. I’m worried that they are gathered in our side yard.”
“Do they eat dogs?”
“No just plants. I think we should just leave them alone though.

The move went well. The two guys we hired in Port A did not show up, so our neighbors pitched in and loaded the truck. The unload went well except I tore off the side view mirror or the rental truck on a wall on a narrow street. Other than that all was good.

All new scents for the Dynamic Duo. Wait until they have to deal with hot pavement. I’m sure they will become neighborhood celebrities.

OMG. We can’t wait for the hot pavement period. Means a 6:00 AM walk or late late. We have to keep Twiggy off the hardscape since she pulls so much that she grinds her paw nails to nubs. 😊

They are on a brand new adventure, replete with leaves, macadam and deer. On that last count, I’m sure they’re going to have plenty to say about their new neighbors in your walks to come.

I”m glad the girls are adapting to the new place. A river isn’t the Gulf, but I love watching rivers, maybe the girls will like that. Deer will certainly get their attention.

The new neighborhood looks good with the terrain looking a bit different from the flat beach and deer instead of sea gulls for the girls to chase. I am glad you will have a little water near you. All the best to you in Austin!

The girls are going to have a lot of exploring to do, and so many stories to tell. I’m already thinking of the water as a bit of a mystery waiting to be discovered 🙂
Love the photo with the deer. We sometimes have them wander into are yard too, but it’s infrequent enough that it always gives me a start.

I laughed at your Marin/Austin connection. I lived in Berkeley for three years, and it was interesting in any number of ways. I’m sure that the girls will do their part to keep Austin weird. That’s a fine looking cenizo bush in the front yard, too — it’s one of my favorites.

The cenizo also is called the barometer bush. It has some unique qualities, which I wrote about here. You’ll love its flowers.

New smells, new smells! Your walks are probably twice as long as I imagine they have to sniff and resniff their new turf 😉 I loved hearing about your new place from their point of view. You know, I thought the deer were fake at first. Now i’m really jealous … I’d love to have deer in my front yard every morning 🙂

How wonderful for you to have moved to another lovely neighborhood. I’m glad your fur babies are enjoying their walks and exploring. I have a love/hate relationship with deer. Last year they ate my tulips – bulbs and all. When my sons were growing up we lived in a house that had 4 beautiful and very large pin oaks. The deer would eat all the acorns (a plus since I love barefootin’). Our neighbor called us one evening and told us to look out our front window. There were 25 deer in the front yard crunch-munching on acorns. The rest of the oaks were in the backyard which was surrounded by a 5-foot fence. Those deer just hopped right over. I hope your fence is higher.

Yes, our fence is will be six feet. We have lived with deer on and off for quite a while. In California we had a beautiful Manzanita tree that a buck used to rub off the antler velvet. One spring he came a rubbing and the rains had undermined the tree. To his surprise and ours the tree fell over never to be the same again.
