Thursday – Anything Possible – Twiggy and Lucy Have a Backyard

Lucy and Twiggy

“Hey, Lucy. Look at this weird screen thingy.”

“Yeah, The Boss put that up so we could go out without a leash.”

“Why’s that?”

“This yard has no fence, and he thought you and I would like to roam a little without being constrained by a leash.”

“Boy, I get that. What are those little things o the ground?”

“I heard The Boss say it was pea gravel. He is not too happy with the landscaping.”

“Gosh. I think it’s swell. These little bushes are cute, and this black stuff is delicious.”

“That’s mulch, and I heard The Boss is going to get rid of it. He doesn’t want you chewing on those pieces.”

“Well let me tell you they are tasty.”

“Don’t let him catch you. I think you are working on a pants warming.”

“Yeah, I suppose it is foolish. I don’t swallow it though.”

“You are probably poisoning yourself.”

“Okay, I’m done. Want to play tag?”

“Yes but watch out for the stones and stuff.”

“I see what you mean. This yard is a little rougher than at the beach.”

“It’s a new house. This isn’t the final yard. Just be careful.”

“I’m not going to run over these things.”

“Make sure you don’t.”

“You have to admit, Twiggy. This yard sure smells different.”

“I’ll say. Look at the purple flowers.”

“Here’s the other screen, Twiggy.”

“I hear we are getting a fence.”

“Yes, it is going all the way around. What are you doing over there?”

“Taking in the fresh air is all.”

“You better leave that stuff alone. You have no idea how it may affect you.”

“It’ll be okay, Lucy.”

“TWIGGY. DROP THAT!!!!!”

“Geez, Dad. You scared me.”

  1. Looks like you have a bit of work ahead of you. But nice to have space for the doggies to run around. Now if only Twiggy would stay out of the mulch.

    1. I think it will be a matter of removing the mulch.I don’t see her leaving it alone any time soon. Thanks, Darlene.

      1. Dot is the same. This morning she was sniffing around some bushes in the park we visit near our house and uncovered a procession caterpillar. They are poisonous for dogs. Sure enough a few minutes later she was vomiting and weak at the knees. So a mad rush to the vet was made. She had some shots and is resting now. Honestly. What a scare.

    1. I’m oing to rip it out as soon as I get a chance. We don’t leave her alone so it is a matter of finger sweeping her mouth for objects. 😳

  3. Nice yard! Once you get the fence up, the dogs will have a wonderful place to frolic. As for Twiggy and the mulch, I feel you. Our chocolate Lab Beau seems to think that the mulch is laid out as an appetizer for him to gnosh on anytime he’s outside. 😳

    1. Doesn’t it drive you crazy? When we lived on the coast I had the yard in pristine condition so there was nothing to grab. Here, there is everything simply for the taking. She cannot be left alone and until we get the yard done, and that’s how it is. Thanks, Lori.

  5. I wonder what Twiggy’s attraction to mulch is – Lucy isn’t chewing on it.

    1. Twiggy is attracted to anything laying around. I think it is a bulldog thing. She picks up rocks, leaves, and sticks. Drives us up the wall. We are constantly sweeping her mouth for objects.

  6. LOL! That photo of Twiggy sprawled in the mulch is too funny! They’re certainly curious, aren’t they? 🙂

  7. I’ve got the feeling Twiggy is going to be a handful in this setting! Meanwhile, I wonder about your adjustment from a condo to a house. How long did you live in the condo?

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Ha haha. We have never lived in a condo, Frank. Yes, there was an elevator and three stories but it was still a single family house. Way too big for us.

  10. I have one who chews things like Twiggy does. Only problem is she swallows all of it, so we have to watch her like a hawk.

  15. Is that mulch pulverized rubber, or dyed black? Not that it makes any practical difference, of course. I never would have thought about a dog eating mulch, but clearly I still have a lot to learn about bulldogs — or Twiggy, at least. it does look like you got a minimalist yard to go with the contemporary lines of your house!

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Yes the yard is basically a field that has been mowed so it is about as minimal as you can get. These are cedar chips that have been decomposed. At least I think so. We need to get rid of the stuff for sure.

  16. I love that Twiggy went and laid in the mulch. Both of my dogs did that when they were little and we were landscaping the front (where they almost never are). It’s so cute. But you’re right; they shouldn’t chew on/eat that stuff.

Thanks for another Thursday smile. Glad you’re settling in.

  17. That seems like a lot of investigation. I can see why you want the mulch removed. I hope Twiggy doesn’t get sick before it can be taken away. All the best in the new house, John. Good pictures. 🙂 — Suzanne

  19. Good morning, John,
different animals have differnent ideas of mulch, don’t they? Our cats like the mulch around the house and around some of our trees to go to the batroom. 😉
    Have a great day,

  20. Wow, John, you even scared me. I’m not used to you yelling. It’s good to see the girls getting used to the new space. When Maddie was a puppy, she would eat every stick and twig – our yard was never as clean as it was that year – I hope it’s just a teething thing.

I think mulch is the worst landscaping idea to ever see the light of day.

  22. It looks like they have a lot of yard to explore. I bet they’ll really be excited with the new landscaping and when the fence goes in. When I yell at my cat like you yelled at Twiggy she looks at me, then goes back to doing whatever it was I didn’t want her doing, LOL. Hopefully, Twiggy is a better listener.

It certainly seems if you don’t want them to chew on something they will:) We have a lab that even at the mature the of almost 12 still has to be watched or will get himself into trouble. Nice to have a yard to work with and the time of year to do it.

  28. Aw, I love looking at the world through Lucy and Twiggy’s eyes! They’re close to the ground so they notice everything. Yep, I’d probably get rid of that mulch, too. But I think it’s cool they get to explore off-leash once in a while. Dallas loves his fenced backyard and said to tell you that will free up your time occasionally!

I’m sure you and Molly will have the place just like you want it in no time.
The little potato however, will be missing her mulch munching. Although I’m sure she’ll find another entertainment. Mega hugs.

  33. Well, it didn’t take long for the Little Potato to get in trouble 😉 We can no longer have flowers in our house because Wendy will eat the leaves … and then vomit them up later. Since she’s a cat, there’s no place high enough to keep her from them. Finger sweeping. That’s a new concept for me. Good luck with finger sweeping Twiggy 🙂
