It is Wednesday Story Day again, and last week, we all got into a stir over the fact that Jerry the server was not answering his phone. Wentworth made it clear that Jerry was supposed to answer, and the mobile phone was going to voicemail after one ring. Wentworth, Larry, and Andrew are headed to the server break room to see if they can find Jerry. We might as well join them. Although the room is small, all one hundred of us can fit in. Let’s go.
“This is the breakroom, gentlemen.”
“Thanks, Went er, Sanford. I don’t see anyone here. Hey, look. Here’s the phone. Could this be Jerry’s phone?”
“Let me look. Ah yes. It sure looks like the model we issue the servers. I’ll have to check the number, though.”
“Looks like the battery has been taken out.”
“Yeah. No wonder it went to voicemail. Jerry has disabled the phone.”
“If, in fact, this is his phone.”
“I don’t see the battery anywhere.”
“So, detective, what should we do?”
“I’m thinking of going to his house. Do you have the address?”
“I do. It is in my office.”
“We’d appreciate your help.”
“No problem, detective. Follow me.”

“Slow down, Andrew. I think the apartment building is next.”
“How about I park here?”
“Yeah, this looks good. The number is 304. I’m assuming it is on the third floor.”
“Of course, it is. With our luck, the elevator will be out of order.”
“Have some faith Andrew. Let’s go in this door.”
“It does look like the entrance.”
“And lookie here. An elevator. Hit the up button, will you?”
“I’ve seen slower elevators, but I can’t remember when.”
“Here it is. Watch your step, old man.”
“You said the third floor. Right?”
“Yup. Boy, you are right. This is a slow one.”
“Here we are. You want to go first?”
“Sure, Andrew. After all, I have a gun.”
“I am guessing 304 is to the right.”
“Very good. Here it is. Oh, look. It has a doorbell.”
“Much better than pounding. Nice tone too.”
“I don’t hear anyone inside. Ring it again.”
“I still don’t hear anyone. Maybe pounding is the way to go. Open up, Jerry. This is the police.”
“Nice subtle touch, Larry.”
“I would say he’s not home.”
“Any way we can go in?”
“Not without a warrant unless we have probable cause.”
“Like a guy takes his battery out of his phone and is alluding the cops by laying low.”
“Let me try the door. An unlocked door could be a sign of forced entry.”
“Locked, huh?”
“Yup. Wait, I hear something. Jerry. Open the door.”
“Hey, man. I was sound asleep. What do you want?”
“We need to come in and talk to you.”
“Sure, man. Come in. You got any coffee?”
I’m betting you don’t have a cup of coffee for the poor guy… just saying! 🙂

Must be an old phone. Can’t imagine how you get the battery out of modern models.

You had me going and going like the Energizer Bunny, John. Now I’m trying to figure out what the heck is going on. I hope one of these guys is carrying a Box-o-Joe.

Hmm. You’ve got me stumped. I didn’t expect him to be there or answer.
The plot thickens yet again!

Yeah, not sure what Jerry has to do with all this.

He’s alive!
For now anyways . . .
And who does Jerry think these guys are? Door Dash?

Wow! I did not expect him to answer the door, and so cordially. But, I think they should have brought coffee! 🙂

Who asks strangers at their front door for a cup of coffee?? Jerry’s not playing with a full deck, is he? That, or perhaps he’s hung over. Or trying to distract them further.

He is rather nonchalant about the whole thing, isn’t he?
Expecting coffee no less…
Looking forward to the next one!

Do you remember the old sitcom, “Car 54, Where Are You?” with Toody & Muldoon? These two remind me of them sometimes!

I do remember that show. Fred Gwinn was terrific.
