Wednesday Story Day – AKA – Hump Day

Lucy and Twiggy

“OMG, Twiggy. What are you looking for now?”
“Got my eye out for Friday.”
“It’s Wednesday. You have a long wait.”

It is Wednesday Story Day again and last week we were relieved that Andrew, Larry, and Jerry were able to convince the police that they were legit. It looks like they had to clear out of Jerry’s apartment, so they all went to Larry’s room at the hotel for a little conversation.

“I hope Wentworth didn’t see us come in.”

“I don’t think he did. We will get to him next after Jerry here tells us what he knows.”

“You are talking like I’m not here.”

“Oh, yes, you are here, all right. Andrew and I want to know everything so let’s get to it.”

“Where do you want to start?”

“Let’s start with Wentworth. Why did he want you to keep your mouth closed and why make up a story about Mrs. Rafferty and Charles Jenkins?

“Well, the answer to the first is Wentworth knows something about what Mrs. Rafferty was up to.”

“How do you know that?”

“I mentioned a big tip and he immediately told me not to discuss Mrs. Rafferty again.”

“That’s all?”

“No. When Mr. Rafferty was found dead, Wentworth became unglued and warned me not to mention that Mrs. Rafferty was in the hotel at the time.”

“Why do you suppose he did that?”

“You know Wentworth is Cortez’s son in law, don’t you?”

“No, I did not know that. So what?”

“You didn’t hear it from me.”

“Yeah sure. Go ahead.”

“Cortez and Rafferty got into it one night and Wentworth was there. Cortez told Rafferty that, he’d better, and I quote, ‘Cut the Shit, or something bad’s going to happen.”’

“How do you know this?”

“I was serving drinks in the suite where they were meeting.”

“They let you out of the room alive?”

“Oh yeah. Tip me enough and your secrets are safe.”

“So, Wentworth was concerned that you overheard.”

“He made a special point to tell me to forget everything I heard.”

“Okay, why the lie implicating Charles?”

“I lost my head. Let’s just say I’m not proud of that story.”

“So, as far as you know, Charles has nothing to do with all this.”

“As far as I know.”

“Why did Mrs. Rafferty give you a big tip.”

“I’m not sure. I did see someone come out of her room that morning I brought her breakfast.”

“She must have known you did.”

“Yeah. Couldn’t have been more than twenty seconds after the guy left, and I knocked on the door.”

“Could you identify the guy?”

“I could try. He moved pretty fast, though.”

“Okay, Jerry, you’ve been helpful. Anything else?”

“Not that I can think of.”

“Where can we take you.”

“I’m here. I need to go to work.”

“Let’s keep this morning between us, okay?”

“Believe me, I don’t need Wentworth knowing any information came from me.”

“Okay, then. If you think of anything here’s my card. Just give me a call.”

“Will do. See you later.”

“And Jerry?”

“Stay close okay?”

“Yessir.”

  1. I’m surprised he’s going into work. Though I guess he should act normal.

    1. And he needs the job. Always a big motivator. You and I would have quit this nightmare day one.

  3. Hmm, could we be getting close to an answer to the mystery? Miss Twiggy appears to be in a rather precarious position. I’ve never seen a dog straddle the back of a couch.

    1. She thinks she is a horsewoman. I haven’t had the heart to break it to her that the sofa is no horse. Thanks, Liz.

      1. Yes, let her have her illusions.

  4. “Stay close…” The last time they were close someone shot their way into their room. So, Wentworth is related. I’m liking him less and less as this move along. Nice work, John. I think the boys are into something. Of course I’m pondering this mystery man.

I like seeing Twiggy on the lookout for Friday.

      2. She climbs on the arm of the sofa and then cat walks across the back to where she wants to look out the window.

      1. Of course he won’t. So long as he stays away from any stray bullets, he should be okay though.

  7. I’m worried for Jerry – maybe they should have gotten the identity of the person before he went to work.

  8. Wentworth is Cortez’s SIL? Wow, did I miss that before, or did that bombshell just drop?
I think Jerry needs to be very, very careful!

    1. Nope. Bombshell just now. Yes he does. I’m thinking Wentworth might have it out for him.

  10. Twiggy cracks me up sitting like that on the sofa back — for all the world, she looks like she’s ready for the rodeo! And Lucy looks like she could care less what a precarious position her sis is in! So Wentworth is Cortez’s SIL, huh? Nice twist. Now let’s see what next week brings!

  12. In the picture: “Twiggy & Lucy’s are making their before-Friday exercises!” Twiggy is very flexible. I wonder how she climbs on the sofa to stay like that? You should train her for the next Olympics, dear John! 🙂

    1. She is a natural sofa rider. maybe some day they will have sofa riding as an Olympic sport.

  13. Applesauce… I’m worried about Jerry. I enjoyed this (as I always do), John. LOL and Twiggy is a riot the way she’s riding the back of the sofa. Lucy is very patient. 😀 Hugs on the wing.

  16. I have time tonight to read only one of my friends’ blogs, and of course, since it is Wednesday (well, technically Thursday now, but what matter), of course the one must be John Howell’s, for I have been holding on to the edge of my seat for a full week now. My opinion? Jerry is a ‘dead man walking’. And more and more, Larry and Andrew are starting to remind me of Joe Friday and Bill Gannon from the old Dragnet series! Thanks for the much-needed smiles, John!
