Friday JohnKu – AKA – TGIF

“What makes Friday a bath day, Mom.”
“I don’t want to hear the answer Little One.”

Another Friday here in Shelter in Place Land. The eve of the weekend doesn’t seem so special except for all of you work at homers who come Saturday can finally bake cookies, wash the car, and mow the lawn without guilt. Nothing worse than having that lawnmower noise in the background when the boss calls at 2:00 PM to see how you are doing.

One beautiful thing is when the meeting planner decides to do a face time meeting, all you need is a shirt. You can keep the bottom jammies out of sight.

A question. Is it my imagination or does the FedEx guy stare at the bunny slippers when you answer the door?

So I’ve been working at home since 2012 and have a few tips for those of you who would normally go into work each day.

  1. Get dressed. It doesn’t matter what you wear just get dressed in something different than what you wore to bed.
  2. Comb whatever hair you have.
  3. Shave at least every other day if you would normally do that daily.
  4. Go outside for at least a half-hour.
  5. Do not watch TV during the day time.
  6. Eat three meals a day, not just one long meal.
  7. Separate work hours from leisure hours.
  8. Talk to your family before work hours and after work hours. (one bonus is meeting them for lunch which you could rarely do)
  9. Don’t tell your boss how much you love working from home.
  10. Do some facetime with work cohorts. It will keep you informed.

Today’s JohnKu talks about our situation, not being unique. There is some comfort in that idea. I hope you all have a great weekend and stay healthy.

  1. I love the sentiment in today’s Haiku. Thanks for sharing, John, and enjoy your ‘weekend’. I’m lucky enough to have a computer corner at home. When I’m sitting there, it’s work time. Otherwise, I’m in at-home mode. 🙂

  2. I, too, have worked at home for many years, John. I love it and feel especially fortunate now, as it’s one thing I don’t have to stress over at the moment (one of the few)…. Wishing you a good weekend!

    1. Does give you a sense of freedom. The biggest stress in working from home used to be the negative comments from others. Well that’s done. Thanks, Lori. Nice jammies by the way. 😁

  3. This was fantastic, John! I loved the JohnKu and your suggestions were hilarious. I’m having a hard time keeping quiet about how much I enjoy working from home. 🙂 It’s the dangerous commute I don’t miss. Happy Friday!

  4. As a remote worker since last July, I’m well acquainted with the work-attire-top, jammie-and-slippers- bottom on meeting days!

  5. Still trying to get the schedule going here. A lot of it involves schoolwork for the kid, so you never know what’s coming. Nature of the beast these days.

  6. I’ve been (ahem) working from home since 2005, John, and can fully agree with at least eight of your ten pointers. Being a loner and my own boss relieves me of the last two.

    1. Prior to retirement I had occasions to work from home. The company hated it but reluctantly saw some reasons for it. (Negotiations with overseas suppliers was one.) Yet the boss couln’t stand it and would call on the cell to “check in and see if I needed any help.”

  7. I was thinking that maybe the FEDEX guy was jealous of those bunny slippers. 🙂 I think your Haiku says it all, John, well done.

  8. I laughed at #6. That could be a danger, for sure. Who knows? Maybe day-long meals are the reason the grocery store shelves continue to be depleted.

    1. I think day long obsessive-compulsiveness is what is keeping the shelves empty. I don’t get it . Happy weekend , Linda and thanks.

  9. Those are great tips, John. I wasn’t able to work from home often while employed but those are pretty much the rules I followed.

We are in this together and hopefully, we will enjoy the success together.

    Have a wonderful weekend!

  13. You nailed it on the advice, John. I so want to find myself something I can do from home and still pay the bills. I’m done with the service industry and really don’t want to have to return to a 9-5 office job. Sigh.

Wonderful JohnKu! Happy Friday and have a wonderful and safe weekend!

  15. Great tips on working from home, John. I’ve worked from home for more than a decade now, and I’ve found the same things do work. I never fail to put on makeup, jewelry, and clothing that I wouldn’t mind appearing in public in; nor to exercise, eat healthily, and get sufficient sleep. It also helps to develop a hobby (or some guilty pleasure like eating a candy bar!) every day. If we have to be holed in one place, the least we can do is try to find the positives in life, right? Stay safe and enjoy your weekend!

  20. Excellent list, Boss. I was just talking about this very thing with a guy I work with. His wife works from home and I was like “Kudos to her, that takes true discipline”. Because it does.

Hope you and yours are well.
