Views of the Neighborhood – Getting Ready for Memorial Day

Lakeway residents, and the city are ready for Memorial Day tomorrow. I took a little tour to see what kind of participation folks are preparing. I hope you enjoy the walk.

A home with a flag.

Another.

I liked this one because the wind was blowing the flag.

These chairs looked interesting along with the flag.

The dappled sunlight made a nice shot of the flag.

No display of honor too small.

Big flag.

The city of Lakeway lined all the medians in town with flags. You can see they go on and on.

Another shot of the flags.

Another median.

The city sign is surrounded by flags, but I couldn’t get out of the car to take a picture.

I have featured the sculptures along the medials before. This is a boy playing tennis and the flags.

Views of the Neighborhood

The Freedom center, where all the citizens of Lakeway who have served in the armed forces are honored. The flags are here as well.

Views of the Neighborhood.

A multiple flag display with the right spirit.

And here is mine.

I hope you enjoyed the walk today. On Memorial Day remember those who gave their lives.

Thank you.

  5. What a great tour, John. I did enjoy it.

Perhaps, in our slowed-down and constrained world, we will pay more attention to the reason for this holiday. There are many to thank.

    1. You bring up a good point, Dan. Maybe it takes losing freedom to appreciate what was given to keep it. 😊

Thank you, John, for this walk. Memorial Day is always an emotional day. I think of all the young men and women who faced into harm’s way for ideals they sometimes did not understand but embraced. I’m deeply grateful for their courage and their sacrifice, and only wish that somehow the international leadership could learn to negotiate. ♥

    1. The big problem is we give the heads of state the title “leader.” So far from thieir actual performance. Thanks, Gwen. I hope you have a peaceful memorial day.

  9. Nice walk, John. I hope you enjoy your holiday weekend. This weekend is our first taste of summer weather and, of course, hundreds of idiots flocked to a popular park in Toronto with no masks or social distancing. I’m sure this is the case in many places. It is so selfish to prolong this pandemic with these antics.

  14. The flags are fantastic, John. Such a wonderful show of patriotism. I read somewhere today that the USA is the second most patriotic country in the world. I can’t for the life of me remember which was the first though – I thought it would be the USA. I like the picture of your house. It’s very modern looking with the flat roof and grey decor. So neat and tidy. The opposite of our farmhouse. Have a great day tomorrow.

    1. I would believe that might be Israel. Some surveys have the US as number one but I don’t believe any country could surpass Israel given the nature of the struggle to mantain freedom there. Thak you for the compliment on the house. The roofs look flat but are actually angled. The roof line is designed to look straight from the front. The house is totally different from any we have had in the past. Thanks again, Robbie.

  18. It always pleases me to see communities marking patriotic holidays with flags. I’ve noticed more around my apartment complex than usual this year; I have a feeling people are thinking about freedom in ways they haven’t before, and perhaps considering those who helped to ensure it for our country.

    1. I agree with you, Linda. It is the old story of appreciation of what you have by seeing what it is like to lose it. Freedom is a precious privilege.

  27. A very patriotic neighborhood!!! I did not walk around my own neighborhood this weekend, mainly because it rained all weekend and I didn’t feel like getting drenched. Thanks for the tour!!!

      1. Sometimes yes, sometimes no. A wonderful spring rain … you’ll catch me out dancing a Gene Kelly imitation (very bad imitation), but a cold drizzle or torrential downpour, you might learn new words! 🤬

  28. I really enjoyed this walk, John, and loved seeing all the flags, especially the one dappled in sunlight. Great shot. We always hang our flag, but sadly, we don’t see an abundance of them around here. I don’t why, although I have my hunches. We went for early morning walks before the heat arrived and counted the flags for fun. Our neighborhood was not a display of patriotism as yours. Thanks for sharing…

  29. A beautiful post, John. One of the things I enjoy about our neighborhood is the great number of people that fly a flag year-round. On Memorial Day and 4th of July nearly every house lines their sidewalk, flower beds, or along the street with small flags. Thanks for the walk through your neighborhood.
