Thursday – A Little Personal – Twiggy and Lucy Outside

“A beautiful Day, Lucy.”

“It is Little One. Looks like a day to relax outside.”

“Where you going?”

“Uh, just a little relax time in the sun.”

“You had plenty of relax time inside.”

“One can never get enough relax time. There’s always room for more.”

“I think I hear something over the fence.”

There’s nothing there Little Potato.”

“When’s the last time you did a bear check, huh?”

“I don’t remember. Maybe a couple of weeks ago.”

“A couple of weeks? That’s it I’m outta here.”

“I hate to break it to you but there hasn’t been a bear around here for years.”

“That doesn’t mean there couldn’t be a stray bear just looking for a meal.”

“For heaven’s sake. If a bear was looking for a meal you’d be the last menu choice.”

“And why would that be Ms. Smartie pants?”

“Bears are mostly vegetarian. Tough bulldog would be a last resort.”

“Okay, I can see that. What’s that buzzing sound.”

“Look up.”

“Oh my gosh, it’s a giant bee.”

“It’s a hummingbird. He sure is thirsty.”

“How can he fly? He has no wings?

“His wings are going so fast you can’t see them.”

“It’s amazing what you teach me, Lucy.”

“Aw. Anytime Little one. Anytime.”

  1. Nice shot with the hummingbird. Got a feeder here, but nothing has turned up. Starting to think there aren’t any hummingbirds in the area. How often do you get them?

    1. I had the same problem early in the year. They started to come around about two weeks ago. I think the nectar flowers are not as prevelent as in the spring. I change the sugar water every three days. (Best to boil the water the add sugar when it cools) I use a ratio of water to sugar of 4 to 1 and make small batches so it stays fresh. I would try fresh food and see what happens. Thanks

      1. I made the same mixture. Only thing we attracted were ants that drowned in the feeder. About 8 earwings got in there too.

    1. Given the wind and rain there the hummingbird would have to be pretty tough. Thanks, Harmony.

  3. Yay! I’m so glad to see the hummingbird feeder, John. That should keep the girls entertained. Our feeders are getting a lot of action! Thanks for the heads-up this morning. 🙂

    1. I can’t figure out what went wrong. Oh well. We are just now getting a lot of action. I think the amount of nectar flowers must be less as the summer progresses. Thanks, Jill.

  5. I really enjoy listening in on conversations between Lucy and Twiggy, John. Another great one! And I’m sure you’ve never heard this before, but your doggies are adorable! Love the way Twiggy is sitting on the porch, with one leg behind her. Too cute. 🙂 ❤

Another great one, John. Just two days ago, my daughter texted from Westin, CT that a large black bear had gone through their yard, took a bite out of her son’s nerf ball and wandered away. I think Twiggy might be on to something. 😀

    1. My goodness. I used to live in CT and never saw a bear. I wonder what flavor is in a nerf ball. Thanks, Gwen.

  7. Love your kids’ adventures, John. Lola and I haven’t seen any bears on our morning walks, but we did see a 5′ alligator scamper across the road in front of us this morning, transiting from one pond to another. That’s enough excitement for me for one day! Stay cool…..

  15. Nice to have such a smart big sis! As for the bears, we had one wondering through Illinois recently — the experts suspected it was looking for a mate. Perhaps Twiggy did hear noises?? Oh, and how do you maintain two fences that close together? If I did that, weeds would be a constant aggravation springing up between them!

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Ah ,you mean the lattace work. There is room at the bottom for trimming. There are no weeds just grass. See she might have heard a bear.

      1. Thanks for the clarification. Still trying to figure out how one mows something like that — hopefully, you’ve got a lawn crew with a bunch of weed whackers for the job!

  16. Bear’s aren’t vegetarian, don’t they eat fish? We don’t have bears here but I am sure Baloo used to fish. Not to be contradictory to Lucy, of course [wink].

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Thank you, Robbie. Of course they eat fish but in general no red meat. (Notice I didn’t say Vegan.)

      1. That is interesting, John. I had not heard of bears eating red meat but as people are scared of them, I assumed they might. Good point about vegan.
