Wednesday Story Day – AKA – Hump Day

“What’s up Twiggy?”
“Checking the day.”
“It’s Wednesday. How can you check the day by looking out the rear door?”
“On Friday the hummingbirds are drinking more. Wednesday not so much.”
“Oh.”

It is Wednesday Story Day again, and last week we found out Lazar has a daughter named Carolyn who will be in jeopardy if ADA Thomas can’t figure out an iron-clad protection program for her and Lazar. It looks like Thomas has been thinking while we were away. Let’s get back and see what she has planned.

“Mr. Popović, I’ve been thinking.”

“Yes?”

“If your story is true and you have those phone conversations, are you willing to testify as to the veracity of the evidence.”

“Excuse me, but I’m not sure what you are asking.”

“Let me interpret.”

“Sure, Mr. Stennis. Go ahead.”

“Lazar, what the ADA is asking is are you willing to get up on the witness stand and swear to the activity in the phone conversations?”

“Can’t someone just play the conversations?”

“There is a problem with that. To be admitted into evidence, they have to be recorded with the knowledge of the other person.”

“Oh. So they are worthless.”

“No. They do form the basis for getting warrants and such under probable cause statutes.”

“I don’t know what that means.”

“You don’t have to worry about it. The point is are you willing to recount the events and conversations as an eye witness.”

“What about protection.”

“Let me handle this, Mr. Stennis.”

“Be my guest, Ms. Thomas.”

“I’m prepared to do whatever is possible to protect your daughter and you. If you testify.”

“Is there a way to get that in writing?”

“Of course. I’ll give Mr. Stennis here an agreement for you to review. In the meantime, I think we had better make some provision for your daughter immediately. You are quite safe here, but I would feel better if she were in protective custody.”

“Sounds like jail time to me.”

“No, not at all. We will get her to a safe house and keep her under protection until the trial is over, and you both have new identities.”

“I don’t think she is going to go for it. She has her friends and school.”

“Her life may depend on it.”

“Or I could just keep my mouth shut.”

“I think it is a little late for that. Cortez’s people know you have been taken. It is only a matter of time till they come after Carolyn if nothing more than for insurance.”

“I guess you are right. When can you get her?”

“I need to place a call. We can have British agents take her to a safe place. Our agents will get there within twelve hours to bring her back.”

“Won’t she be frightened?’

“You will need to talk to her and explain the situation.”

“She has no idea I’m involved in criminal activity.”

“I’m sorry to say, Lazar. That needs to change for her safety. She needs to follow our directions to the letter.”

“When should I call?”

“I need to make a few calls. I’ll come back when it’s time. Give me her address and cell phone number. I will need to give it to the authorities. Where is she?”

“She’s in Oxfordshire.”

“She goes to Oxford?”

“Yes.”

“That location is going to make it a little harder. I’ll have to check and see if there is a landing field that can accommodate one of our jets. If not, then we have to go by car from a bigger city.”

“I’ve flown into Oxford airport in Kidlington. It has a huge runway. They train pilots there.”

“I have it on Google. You are right it has a 5,092-foot runway. That plenty for a G5. Good news. Okay, let me go make a couple of calls. Sit tight, and I’ll be right back.”

    2. Well, I think we have to just stand on one foot until the author makes up his mind. Thanks, Gwen. 😊

  4. Oxford is less than two hours’ drive from London. Why would their British agents need to use a jet, and from where?

    1. Ooh! Now who’s being pedantic?

    2. The jet is for US agaents to go and pick Carylyn up after the Brisish agents secure her.

      2. The problem with dialogue is sometimes it moves too fast for the eye. A good lesson for me. No apologies necessary. Thank you for the question. 😁

  5. Well, something seems to be moving in the right direction. I’m worried about the daughter. I’m worried about our guys, too. I wouldn’t be surprised if someone burst through the door at this point.

    1. The ADA uses the FBI as her enforcement arm.(Both in the Department of Justice) It could get sticky from here on out.

  11. The logistics when it comes to diming out a bad guy operation are mind boggling. And what of the daughter’s flight back home? Will she be served a full course meal before Dad springs the not so great news? It’s the least they can do for the poor girl.

    1. I think dad is going to have to talk to her before she gets on a plane. I can’t see a young girl going with a couple af agents freely. I love the phrase dropping a dime. You have to wonder where the phrase was born.

      1. Absolutely positively. And then he better spring for an in flight movie.

The term comes from the old detective novels and was meant in the literal sense back then, when payphones were everywhere. It’s just such a cool term that never goes out of style, not in my book.

Go Boss, you’re really bringing it with this build up.

    2. I looked it up. It’s from using a dime to call the cops on someone. “Where is Bugsy?” “He’s in the backroom dropping a dime on Joey.” 😂

  16. Of course, no one has pointed out that if she’s at Oxford she’ll be used to unexpected and horrible revelations, like having a bedder and sharing a flushing toilet with one third of a rugby team and a dipsomaniac tutor in Applied Sanskrit. She’ll probably be quite pleased to get away…
