Views of the Neighborhood – Another Deer Check

The hullabaloo over Halloween is over, and we all had plenty of rest since we could sleep an extra hour this morning. (yeah, right) Today lacking anything better to do, we are going out to check on the deer. The Producer says, “How boring.” I have to remind everyone that in the age of Rona, we can’t be too particular.

We are going to leave the bus parked and venture on foot. After all, a big yellow bus is not exactly conducive to deer watching. We do have a Good Humor bicycle vendor’s cart to haul our snacks and drinks. We are having hot Mexican chocolate with Kahlua shooters, shredded B-B-Q pork tacos, and toasted almond Good Humor bars.  The Kingston Trio has agreed to walk along with us for entertainment.

So, put on your walking shoes, and let’s go.

The first thing we run into is this sign. I wonder what the parents tell the kids when they ask “What is rut season, Dad?”

The Producer captured this beautiful fellow. Man, she takes great photos.

Views of the Neighborhood

A couple of does taking an early morning nap in our neighbors front yard.

A buck having a snack.

Another young buck taking it easy.

Three does taking five.

Here is a buck in silhouette watching four men approach.

He decides they are suburbanites and no danger at all. He’s pretty sure one even drives a Volvo.

The sisterhood out for a stroll.

Another young buck searching for a doe. Maybe we should tell him she’s not there.

This doe is hard to see, but before yesterday, this was an overgrown lot. It looks like the clearing crew is making it ready for a new house. No more naps here.

Of course, Twiggyis concentrating on the deer. You can barely see them in the neighbor’s front yard.

Let us finish with another of The Producer’s beautiful photos. I think she is a deer witch.

Well, that is our tour. Stay and have more food and drink and listen to the music. I hope you all have a great week.

  1. We are hoping for a better week, but another lockdown is coming into force. We feel like prisoners in our own homes…
We don’t even have such lovely animals where we live, the best we can hope for is a cat or two!

  3. Don’t worry about that sign. There are plenty of Texas kids to explain it to new residents from either coast who think ruts in the road are caused by deer in autumn.

  4. Very cool. Beats the squirrels that we have around here. They just throw acorns at cars and get into attics.

      1. The ones by my house don’t seem to get inside. I hear them running around the roof though. Take them over the stray cats any day. Those are frightening at night with the noises they make.

      2. Yes cats can be very vocal. I think squirrels are a better alternaytive.

  6. Fantastic deer pictures. You can’t go deer watching in our neck of the woods unless you want to be shot by one of those crazy hunters. I have had several great encounters with them on the university campus where I work. They travel from one creek to the next at twilight and sunset.

    1. We don’t have hunters here obviously. Herds of deer are commonplace here. Thanks, Milly Shea. 😊

  9. Great pictures of deer, John. Wow, a song from way back in 1958 when we turned seventeen. I remember that was a favorite song in those days. This old video also had Milton Berle (Uncle Miltie) on it. It seems it was his show. 🙂 — Suzanne

  15. My mind is boggled that you can find so many deer peacefully wandering or resting in your neighborhood, John! Maybe it’s the water that draws them? I think your photos are gorgeous and the captions made my day (especially the one of the buck looking for his sweetie in that bush!)

    1. I think the deer like the grass. There is a lot of it. In the spring there are Bradford pear blossems which they like too. Also there are no hunters here which gives them a sanctuary to in which to roam. I’m glad you enjoyed the photos, Debbie.

  17. Well I am glad this excursion is well feed and beveraged. Is there an urban heard thinning option for the tour ? I have heard that some areas now have a ‘stand your garden’ defense option against the herd. Can one put chocolate mousse on the more diminutive members of the moose family ? Happy Sunday John.

    1. You ask questions of the ages, John. I wouldn’t touch a moose with ten foot pole. 😂

      1. as long as the questions don’t ages you too much John… and considering the general temperament of moose make that a much longer pole.

  37. Wow, that really is amazing (to me in Aus especially). I have so many questions! Do they get aggressive ever? Is it only special times of the day they come out? What does rutting mean, dad?

    Liked by 2 people

    1. Let me take the questions one at a time. The bucks tend to snort and paw the ground when they feel threatened. They don’t charge or anything but you know not to keep doing what you are doing. The does come out all day. The bucks usually y in the morning and evening. Rutting is the term for mating. During this time (October through November) the does come into heat and the bucks tend to become territorial. A number of fights break out when the younger bucks try an incursion into established territories. The reason drivers have to be careful is deer tend to ignore their usual cautions and do not pay attention to where they are. Hope this answered your questions, daughter. 😊
