Friday JohnKu – AKA – TGIF

“Yes Lucy it’s Friday and I’m taking the day off.”
“Okay, Little One. You relax I’ll get the kibble.”
“What kibble?”

It is Friday, which is known as Saturday Eve around here. Well, we have heard that the Rona Virus Vaccine is 90% effective in third stage trials. That is pretty good news. I noticed Ticketmaster has decided to start setting up procedures for concerts once the vaccine is released. I think it will be good to get these pesky teens away from books and back to the music scene. (Spoiler alert: That was a joke)

The lull between inauguration and voting day is a blessed piece of peace so far. I can’t tell you how much nicer it is without having to listen to the right and left sprew hate at each other. Of course, the pundits some blogs, and Twitter trending posts are still full of it, but they are easy to avoid.

I, for one, am glad some of the shows I enjoy are back. I can only watch HGTV for so long. (Well, dummy, it has been almost nine months, so you have at least that much stamina.) I have to explain.  I only watch 45 minutes of entertainment a day. I prerecord everything and then playback. An hour network show takes 45 minutes to play. Then I watch the news for twenty. I guess I shouldn’t exclude news from the entertainment category, but I’m really after the weather because our local news follows the same pattern. 1. Hit and run, assault, or murder (If it bleeds, it leads) 2. Local school district and/or teacher angst. 3. Rona virus update (With no context) 4. Weather highlight. 5. Report from Washington (usually an insult to average intelligence) or Austin city report, which usually will include an update on those experiencing homelessness along with the mayor or city council members explaining why nothing can be done about whatever the issue happens to be. 6. The full weather report including the five day forecast. 7. TV off.

So you can see the time is precious and I want pure entertainment.  There are ten shows recorded regularly, and I can only watch seven in a week.  My viewing then usually lasts until well into summer.

Today’s JohnKu talks about rest for the mind. I hope you. all have a great weekend.

Rest by John W. Howell © 2020

The body needs it,

So rest is all important . . .

Don’t forget the mind.

  1. A local physician agrees with you. Asked how to deal with the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday, he said he had two primary recommendations: build up your immune season with healthy food and exercise, and give your mind a rest by turning off social and other media. So simple!

You’ve summed it up well, John, with a perfect haiku. I took to timing the news — minutes on the virus, minutes on some form of hate, minutes on devastating fires, and the seconds (yes, seconds) on approaching hurricanes or tornadoes. Thank heavens we can fast forward to get those few seconds. 😊

    1. So true. I think all local news must be the same. Thaks, Gwen. Have a super weekend. 😊

  3. Wow … you have the local news down pat. Or wait – maybe your Austin channel and my Cincinnati channel are really one in the same. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-b5aW08ivHU … so now I wonder … The mystery for the weekend …. What are John Howell’s 10 recorded shows?

    1. Yeah, probably none that would interest you. No dancing, golf, travel, or bells. 😁

  4. Your local news sounds much like ours, John. Wonderful haiku today. These days, resting the mind is my top priority. Enjoy your Friday. I love the photo!

    1. Thak you, Jill. This was a left over from Thursday. Twiggy does love her chaise lounge. 😁

  5. A disciplined approach to entertainment. I admire that, John. Does that include football and other sports? I suppose for the Steelers, 16 games times the last 2-3 minutes could fit in a 45-minute heart-attack-inducing window, but college ball is a little harder to predict.

    Your JohnKu is great advice.

    1. I do the sports shows live. We seldom get Steelers games. We always get WVU, Notre Dame and Baylor. It just depends. Like I had to see the Notre Dame/Clemson game. Had to see Steelers/Cowboys. Same for WVU/UT. Baylor not so much. So, I was very busy last weekend.

    1. I just don’t have the time for any additional stuff unless a Steelers game is televised or something like the Notre Dame /Clemson match up happens. Thanks, Craig.

Our local news follows the same pattern. They are trying to sensationalize the weather now by predicting storms that never come. I don’t know. Maybe this is a national trend.

    1. We hear a lot about the storms too. Never any rain for us. Thanks, Molly Shea. As a side note I know I typed “Milly” last time. Total typo. 😊

  11. I can’t sit through the news, myself. Honestly, there is nothing positive in there. I, too, am so very glad the shows are on and they are recorded to watch when I want. I miss my old kitchen as I would watch them as I prepared my supper. Now, I can’t see my TV. Dang.
I’ve been less and less on social media (not counting the blogs, of course) and really, don’t feel the desire to increase my intake.
Have a splendiferous Friday the Thirteenth!!

  12. I’m laughing at your local news. Huh, sounds just like ours and we’re many many states apart. My guy and I do the same thing. Just record a few shows. Watch 20 min local news (for the weather, and yes the sports, since NE has some interesting sports teams) and then one show. After that READ READ READ. I wonder what your favorite shows are? We find it difficult to find good ones, except for British mysteries and shows like The Crown. Laughed about your “teen” joke. Ahhh, the young. Most still haven’t even discovered what lies within a book – MAGIC.

    1. Mine are the regular network shows.Nothing of great import just 45 minutes of mindless viewing. Blacklist, NCIS, NCIS LA, This is Us, SealTeam, The Good Doctor, Grey’s Anatomy, Station 19, Chopped and Bull.

Thankfully, our office moved and it’s not in my ear anymore. Love your Ku and Twiggy is absolutely adorable. I wish I could take the day off, but I’m reveling in the fact that Friday has finally arrived. Have a wonderful weekend!

  27. I read my news rather than watch the talking heads, and He-Man teases me because I watch or record what he calls the “old man” shows. You know Matlock, Magnum PI, Mannix, Perry Mason, and a few other detectives show on BBC.

I’ve recently got sucked into The Curse of Oak Island and binged watched it so I was up to date when the season premiere aired. It’s so good!

Resting your mind is good. I hope you get a lot of rest this weekend so you’re fresh and witty come Monday. Pffft! As if there was any doubt about that!! 😀
