Friday JohnKu – AKA – TGIF

“Finally Friday, Lucy.”
“Yup Little One. How about a ruckus?”
“Sounds good. I’ll give you a head start.”
“Last one to the fence is a goat.”
“No a cat.”

The last Friday before Christmas is here. I hope everyone has their shopping done. If not, I know special handling (To be read “Big Money”) can get those gifts delivered on time. You have to hurry, though. Time is running out.

It has been a quiet week. I did have one hiccup on Word Press. For some reason, many of the post notifications were not delivered by e-mail. In the course of investigating the problem, I closed my WP site. I thought maybe a reboot was in order. I then got a weird message when I tried to log back into WP.  Here is the message

“Whoops!
There was a small systems error. Please try refreshing the page and if the error is still there, drop us a note and let us know.”

Well, I refreshed the page. Nothing happened. I tried clicking on the link, and again, nothing. I hit the internet and found out it was a 502 error with enough steps to fix it that would drive a rocket scientist crazy. I went for a bike ride instead. When I got back, it was working.

I just hate it when WordPress acts up, and there is almost nothing we as users can do about it. It is an out of control feeling for sure. I apologize if I’ve missed any posts on Wednesday or Thursday. I will be checking the reader and hopefully won’t miss much.

It is now working fine, so I guess I’ll just move on. Today’s JohnKu talks about systems errors. I hope you all have a relaxing weekend.

A systoms error,

No problem, I will fix it . . .

Says no one, ever.

  1. A systems Analyst I once worked with told me that problems and errors were to be embraced, not feared. After all, he said, if nothing ever went wrong, we’d be out of a job in no time!
Have a good weekend and, if I don’t catch up before, have the best Christmas current circumstances allow.

    1. Thank you, Kieth. Merry Christmas to you and yours as well. I wish WP had better customer support. Someday I’ll relate a few stories when I was the liaison between the exec level and the forerunner of IT (called MIS) I’ll give you a hint. The hardware was IBM 360 model 50. My biggest task was to get computerized reports that my boss ( the president) could understand. Always a grey hair moment. Happy New year too.

      1. Ah yes. I remember MIS – that’s what we were called when O & M went out of fashion. My section had many names: Management Services lasted a while before we became Information Services. Some wags combined MIS and IS and labelled the door “Office of Mis Information”

  3. Boss,
This happened to me yesterday as well. I tried everything, including trying a different browser but Whoops kept showing up.
    And then it was back.
    Strange.

    1. OMG. We were hit by the dreaded WP virus. I tried everything too. We are such fools. Next time I’m going to turn it all off and be done for the day. 😂

  4. So true, dear John! Besides, the WP support is awful at present. The Internet life makes us feel hopeless in such situations as they are beyond our control.

I like the photo of today: encouraging running for a better life. Twiggy & Lucy are going to wrap gifts at the Twiggy Resort. 😂😂😂

  7. Actually, sometimes the system errors do get fixed. Someday I may write about my last week, but suffice it to say: seven hours from home, alternator goes out, alternator fixed, fix fails, engine overheats, dead car. I had an angel of a mechanic in a town I’d never visited who took responsibility, and today’s the day I turn in the rental and turn over my new engine. We’ll see how things go from here, but I’m hopeful!

  8. Those WordPress Gnomes are at it again. You would think they would deliver some peace and goodwill this time of year – but oh no – they are willing to do their work anytime. Then again, hope you realize who they actually work for. Yep – It’s Obama’s fault.

    1. I knew that. That’s why I took a bike ride. Most of Obama’s mistakes are cleared up with a little time. 😁

Great Haiku — and bike solution! I’ve been having glitches – sudden and unexpected. Then they magically correct. Given the current international craziness, I’ve wondered could it be the Chinese, no, maybe the Russians, no, maybe the CIA or FBI, no, maybe just the backroom techs having too much to drink at their Holiday parties. Yep, I’ll go with that. 😁

  12. I wouldn’t say I’d fix it, but when we had system problems, I wish my coworkers had all gone for bike rides. Don’t you wish WordPress would publish a log of these incidents.

I hope you cruise through this Friday without any bother. The weekend is waiting.

  14. I would say the blob is moving slowly through various sections of the internet and WP. The ‘bell’ notification has slush flowing through its veins this morning. John take those keys away from the girls. I don’t want them singing Beach Boys songs for Christmas. It might be one ruckus too many. Now to watch the yellow comment phase. GP’s just phased in. The box turns mustard colored as the comment phases in. Yup that blob is moving around lumpily.

  20. Great JohnKu, and one we can all identify with, John. Technology is something I really love–when it functions correctly. But not so much so when it doesn’t! Nothing is more frustrating, especially if you actually WORK online, rather than just enjoy surfing around. I’m sorry you had problems, and I hope they are gone for a LONG time now!

May 2021 be an improvement over 2020, and may those improvements include exactly NO 502 errors! 🙂

Click that and you will get a choice on how often you get notified. Also in your general settings under WP Admin you have to have the E-Mail comment section checked. Hope this helps.
