Views of the Neighborhood – The Opening of the Little Free Library in Lakeway

Dallas Gorman, General Manager of the Lakeway Activity Center, came up with a unique vehicle for the latest Little Free Library in Lakeway. she located an old popsicle freezer that hadn’t sold at a government auction. With a glass door to protect its contents, she reimagined the freezer repurposed as the library’s base, and the project was born.

The Little Free Library will be accessible in the Activity Center’s driveway at 105 Cross Creek. The official ribbon-cutting ceremony was on December 21st, and we were there.

We are back to our old stand-by bus with reclining studio chairs and individual entertainment sections. Today we are serving Maine lobster sliders’ appetizer, followed by your choice of Grilled New York strip or Filet of sole meuniere.  These are being served with twice baked potatoes and broccolini. For dessert, we have rum raisin ice cream on top of warm spice cake. We have the top shelf bar and are serving Mercer Small Lot Petit Verdot 2015 for the red and Pegasus Estate Winery – Grenache 2017 for the white.

The Bangles will be on the tour for your music enjoyment. So let’s get on the bus and go see the dedication of the Little Free Library in Lakeway.

The library is all wrapped for the grand opening ribbon-cutting ceremony.

Here comes the cutter.

Dallas Gorman (left) has placed an assortment of icy treats on top of the library.

The ribbon cutter was given the honor by being the first to arrive with a donation.

A couple of boys were cajoled into undoing the wrapping.

Ta da. The Reading is Cool Little Library is born.

Close up of the breaking news that the Little Free Library is now open.

Chock full of books.

Time for a frozen treat. The drumsticks went fast.

Last look of the Activity Center and departing guests.

Stay and enjoy more food and listen to the Bangles Manic Monday. I hope you enjoyed the visit to the Activity Center and the Little Free Library grand opening. I hope you have a great week.

  2. That’s a great idea, John, particularly if it gets kids reading as well as fostering a community spirit.

When our local authority closed the library in our community (an old coal-mining town that has seen better days), it was taken over by a local charity – cast your eyes over https://www.s4all.org.uk/ to see what it is doing now.

      1. They do a great deal for the local community, Liz. We’ve only been here for a bit over a year, but once life gets back to normal post-COVID, we plan to get involved at some level.

      2. I was involved with our library pre-Hurricane Harvey. It was wonderful. The library did not open back up before we left the coast. I haven’t gotten involved here yet. Same Covid reason.

  13. That’s a great idea for reuse, John. However, seeing it did spark my appetite, so it was good of you to have ice cream for dessert. Anything that promotes reading is a good idea. Our library has only been open for curbside access since spring. When I saw the Bangles were providing entertainment, I thought you might have us walking like Egyptians. Reclining, drinking and overeating is much better.

Here’s hoping you have a less than manic week.

  14. This is such a great idea! I’ve noticed the doors on the two near me are sometimes ajar in the wind, and that won’t be a problem with this old goodies freezer!

  16. I enjoy all the forms of these little free libraries. The concept of this one should be especially appealing to the kids, but I did wonder — most I’ve seen display the available books more conveniently. This one looks like it requires digging to get to books at the bottom. It may not be a problem, of course, and kids do love to dig.

I was greatly surprised to find a little free library in the parking lot of the Big Thicket visitors’ center. As you might imagine, there were a lot of nature books there, but also some darned good fiction for friends or spouses not so interested in the trees and the birds.
