Here s a shot of the front yard on Sunday as the snow begins to stick. We never get snow, so this was a big occasion.
“Lucy. What is that white stuff starting to form up on the yard.”
“I saw this once at the Coast in 08, Little One. It’s snow. I’ll go down and confirm.”
“Well? Is it snow?”
“It sure is. It’s starting to fall pretty good.”
“Is it dangerous?
“No. It is cold, though. Let’s wait a few minutes till it gets thick, and then we can play.”
“Wow, this stuff is cold all right.”
“Go ahead and sniff around some more.”
“Look, there is still some grass over here.”
“Yeah, the vines keep it from getting snow.”
“You should smell this.”
“What is it?”
“I don’t know. Almost smells like a wet cat. Look, here are some tracks.”
“Wet cat? You having an olfactory hallucination again?”
“Where did these tracks come from. They smell very familiar.”
“That’s cause they are yours. What is the matter with you, anyway?”
“No wonder they seemed familiar. Can you eat this stuff?”
“Yes, you can, just watch out for the yellow snow. You are right. There is the smell of wet cat.”
They keep threatening us with snow, but like you, we rarely get any here…

“Olfactory hallucination?” That sounds dangerous. 😄 Well done, John. Whether two-footed or four-footed, the first experience with snow is a delight. Thank you for the reminder and delight. 💗

Ha ha. I always loved it when an animal companion of mine first discovered snow. It was a wonder to see and remember. It must have been fun to watch Twiggy be introduced to the elusive snow. Our Boxer Samantha reacted like a small child at the beginning of each winter. She’d love to run and chase the snowflakes. Great memories!

There’s nothing more fun that watching a dog encounter snow for the first time. On the other hand, I remember a lot of full-grown adults running out into our Christmas Eve snow in 2004 in bare feet and pjs, acting for all the world like four-year-olds. It’s only mid-January — we still have a chance!

The snow at the coast caused the same reaction in adults. Thank you, Linda.

We had snow so deep when Otto was little that he couldn’t get outside without getting stuck. When I got home from work, Old What’s Her Face had shoveled him a loop so he could take care of business. Even a good frozen crust won’t hold up a bulldog.

I’m curious what part of the country you live in, John. I spent nine years of my childhood in the Dakotas, so we had some major blizzards. In that respect, it was a kid’s paradise with fort building.
I’m now on the west coast in northern California, and most years, we don’t get any snow. What was comical to me as a kid with midwestern roots, school got canceled when there was a mere dusting of snow on the ground.

I currently live in an Austin TX suburb. I also lived for a time in Marin County and also Sonoma so I understand the snow situation in Northern CA. We would love to drive to Lake Tahoe for feet of snow. Other than that I also lived in Illinois, Michigan and Indiana. The last time I really had to contend with snow was in 1992. That was the year I moved to California.

Snow is lovely I didn’t think it snowed in Texas, my parents hate it though they work in transport and one of their vans got stuck on Thursday in the North of England, when I called my Mum she was worried because a recovery company couldn’t pull the driver out of a ditch, a kind Samaritan with a 4 x 4 and snow chains on his Landrover attached a rope to the toe bar and pulled him out thankfully.
