Laughing…the birds are a mixed blessing, aren’t they, John? We have a beautiful mourning dove nesting on our patio. She has hatched several batches of chicks in this nest and I love hearing and seeing them, but dear Lord do they make a mess. I sweep away poo every morning, and sometimes twice a day. Ahh well, such is life. A small price to pay to allow them a safe play to grow. 🥰

I adore the mourning dove’s call…I find it incredibly tranquil…and I love watching Mama feed her hatchlings. Pushing a bit of poo is a small price to pay for the joy of experiencing the cycle of life right outside my door. 💕

I agree. I had a friend who raised a mourning dove she found in her yard. She had it for years.

I loved this, John. I can definitely see a children’s book in the making. 🙂 I feel like I’m controlled by the birds. This winter we’ve had more than ever before. We can’t keep the feeders full. The cardinals eat 4-5 cups of sunflower seeds a day. Thankfully, they do their business elsewhere. Your weather looks gorgeous!

Waxwings? They migrate through here and will strip trees of berries in a matter of hours. What I hate is when the sparrows discover my car’s mirrors and think there is another bird looking at them. Makes for messy car doors!

Are those waxwings? I’d happily accept the poop as the price to pay for a visit from those gems! I’ve only had them visit twice over the span of several years. At least they don’t linger when they show up. When the berries (or whatever) are gone, so are the birds — like people at a cheap buffet.

Those were not waxwings. Too small. The waxwings were here prior to the freeze and a few days ago and I think they are gone now. They are something else for sure. Thanks, Linda.

Guess a plus side is that they’re not geese. Those are mean and messy. There’s also one currently staring at me through the window as if I’m on his turf. Hate this time of year.

Wonderful dialogue, John. I loved how Twiggy investigated the mess, that you will soon clean. 😊 We gave up on birdfeeders, not because of the mess but because we were invaded by a couple of Pileated woodpeckers. They’d create havoc at the feeders, eat until their bellies were full, and then attack the house. We’ve filled all the holes within ladder reach, but alas many holes remain. I know they are beautiful birds, but I don’t have a kind word for those intruders. 😣

I’m with you on the woodpeckers. They can create a big problem. Yes I will clean. I’m waiting until Sunday moring early tocrank up my power washer. I have a neighbor who loves to run leaf blowers very early. 😁

This makes me think of the time we were driving our convertible along the ocean with the kids in the back. My daughter was laughing and waving her arms in the air- and then we heard the screech! A seagull had flown overhead and let one drop, right on her head! lol

Our birdfeeder is hanging from a tree branch and lots of grass underneath it so we don’t have to worry about the resultant mess. But the suet feeder is on our deck and we have sort of given the back deck over to the birds. 🤨😅

We just toss the No-Waste bird seed and suet pellets on the ground. I’m not sure it does anything to stop the damage, but it gives everyone a chance.

Hi John, the birds have made such a mess of our deck! But of course it’s my fault for sprinkling (and also spilling) a lot of bird seed on top of the snow as well as keeping the feeder full. Now the snow is melting and the mess is showing up even more 🙂

I can sympathize, John, we have the same problem AND the birds ate all my plums, every single one. I think I have mentioned before that we have the fattest loerie birds in South AFrica living in my garden.
