Thursday – A Little Personal – Twiggy and the Birds

“What the heck? Look at this mess.”

“Bird time again, Little one.”

“But come on. Can’t they hold it.”

“it is not in their nature.”

“Goodness. Look at them.”

“I know. That’s why I’m staying right here.”

Twiggy and Lucy

“I don’t blame you. There must be a thousand.”

“Watch when you look up.”

“So far, they are staying over on the side.”

“That could change real fast.”

“Is our whole life is going to be controlled by birds?”

“Only if you let them.”

“I sure enjoy the patio but don’t think a poop shower would be nice.”

“Then come over here.”

“That’s what I mean. They are in charge. I think I will bark them to St. Louis.”

“Whoa. That is some bark. They all took off.”

“Come join me then. The sun is terrific.”

“You are right about the mess. The boss needs to get on this.”

“Welcome to my world.”

“Or at least a world you control. Nice job.”

  1. Laughing…the birds are a mixed blessing, aren’t they, John? We have a beautiful mourning dove nesting on our patio. She has hatched several batches of chicks in this nest and I love hearing and seeing them, but dear Lord do they make a mess. I sweep away poo every morning, and sometimes twice a day. Ahh well, such is life. A small price to pay to allow them a safe play to grow. 🥰

    1. Birds are wonderful. You are so nice to keep them safe, Lori. 😁

      1. I adore the mourning dove’s call…I find it incredibly tranquil…and I love watching Mama feed her hatchlings. Pushing a bit of poo is a small price to pay for the joy of experiencing the cycle of life right outside my door. 💕

      2. I agree. I had a friend who raised a mourning dove she found in her yard. She had it for years.

  2. I loved this, John. I can definitely see a children’s book in the making. 🙂 I feel like I’m controlled by the birds. This winter we’ve had more than ever before. We can’t keep the feeders full. The cardinals eat 4-5 cups of sunflower seeds a day. Thankfully, they do their business elsewhere. Your weather looks gorgeous!

    1. The weather has taken a turn for the better, Jill. I love the cardinals around here. They are the first to start singing in the morning. I’m sure they appreciate the sunflower seeds. 😁

      1. That’s great news. I’m surprised our cardinals don’t weigh 200 lbs! 🙂

  3. Bark those birds to St. Louis!! Nobody wants a poop shower.

  4. Waxwings? They migrate through here and will strip trees of berries in a matter of hours. What I hate is when the sparrows discover my car’s mirrors and think there is another bird looking at them. Makes for messy car doors!

    1. Hahaha. Yes we have the waxwings too. They are like a pack of wolves. I don’t like them hitting the windows. More than one has been stunned. 🙄

  5. Good thing they can bark those inconsiderate birds away. Happy Thursday, John. Give the girls belly rubs from me.

  7. Are those waxwings? I’d happily accept the poop as the price to pay for a visit from those gems! I’ve only had them visit twice over the span of several years. At least they don’t linger when they show up. When the berries (or whatever) are gone, so are the birds — like people at a cheap buffet.

    1. Those were not waxwings. Too small. The waxwings were here prior to the freeze and a few days ago and I think they are gone now. They are something else for sure. Thanks, Linda.

  8. Ha ha! There is always some leftover that isn’t much fun. They do make wonderful entertainers though.

  9. Guess a plus side is that they’re not geese. Those are mean and messy. There’s also one currently staring at me through the window as if I’m on his turf. Hate this time of year.

  10. Can’t have the birds without the poop! And they do like to choose strategic locations, don’t they? Poor pups, having to navigate 😉

  12. Poor girls. If it isn’t snow, it’s birds. They really need some outside sun time without interference. I hope the bird situation doesn’t last long!

Wonderful dialogue, John. I loved how Twiggy investigated the mess, that you will soon clean. 😊 We gave up on birdfeeders, not because of the mess but because we were invaded by a couple of Pileated woodpeckers. They’d create havoc at the feeders, eat until their bellies were full, and then attack the house. We’ve filled all the holes within ladder reach, but alas many holes remain. I know they are beautiful birds, but I don’t have a kind word for those intruders. 😣

    1. I’m with you on the woodpeckers. They can create a big problem. Yes I will clean. I’m waiting until Sunday moring early tocrank up my power washer. I have a neighbor who loves to run leaf blowers very early. 😁

  14. I’m with Charles. Boise is overrun with geese and they leave a huge mess. They never leave, so it’s all year around here.

  17. I loved this statement, “Is our whole life going to be controlled by birds?” Such a multitude of meanings hidden in that statement (at least to me). 🙂 Great post, John. It’s always fun to see the girls.

    1. As you have suspected most of the Twiggy and Lucy stories are metaphors. The question bears repeating. Thank you, Jan

  18. Not a day without a trouble at the Twiggy Resort. Lucy & Twiggy are holding an important spring summit: “What to do with the bird mess and if the birds must be punished for that?”. A serious question to be solved. 🙂

    1. There is always something going on here for sure. I think the bird punishment should be having to listen to Twiggy bark. Thanks, Maria. 🌷

  20. This makes me think of the time we were driving our convertible along the ocean with the kids in the back. My daughter was laughing and waving her arms in the air- and then we heard the screech! A seagull had flown overhead and let one drop, right on her head! lol

    1. Hahaha. I can’t tell you how many times I was hit with seagull poop when I lived on the Gulf.

That is a lot of birds and their added gifts to the patio. I’m glad she knows the special bark to get them to move on.

  22. Our birdfeeder is hanging from a tree branch and lots of grass underneath it so we don’t have to worry about the resultant mess. But the suet feeder is on our deck and we have sort of given the back deck over to the birds. 🤨😅

    1. Good idea, Pamela. 😁

  23. We just toss the No-Waste bird seed and suet pellets on the ground. I’m not sure it does anything to stop the damage, but it gives everyone a chance.

  25. Hi John, the birds have made such a mess of our deck! But of course it’s my fault for sprinkling (and also spilling) a lot of bird seed on top of the snow as well as keeping the feeder full. Now the snow is melting and the mess is showing up even more 🙂
