A short note. I am currently extending the downspout drains to take the water away from the center of the yard. During the heavy rains, the yard floods and takes a while to move away. Twiggy loves to play in the puddles, and Lucy hates to get her feet wet. In some of the later photos (By the glove), a tall white pipe is a cleanout. It needs to be cut and lowered by about six inches, so it is not as prominent.
I let Lucy and Twiggy into the construction area to have a look.
“Look at this pipe, Twiggy.”
“I see it. What’s it for, Lucy?”
“I heard talk of extending the downspouts. I think this is the purpose.”
“Extending downspouts? What for?”
“I think to take the rain away from the house.”
“I remember the puddle that used to form here when it rained. I loved playing in it. Drove mom crazy when I ran back into the house dripping wet.”
“Yeah, and that dried-up spot continues to be there.”
“Hey, there’s a stick.”
“I’m going to have a better look.”
“Can’t beat an old stick. This oak is a giving tree.”
“Now I see. The downspout is connected to this longer hose.”
“I just love the taste of oak.”
“Mom’s going to be mad if she catches you with a stick.”
“She hates it when I chew sticks. She’s afraid I will choke. Okay, I’ll stop.”
“You trying to get out of that gate, Little One?”
“No, I just wonder what it is doing here?
“To keep us out of this mess. That’s why.”
“Doesn’t work when Dad leaves it open. Oh, look some smelly stuff on the pipe.”
“Twiggy. Get away from there. That is the sealant. You’ll get stuck to the pipe if you put your nose in there. So what are you two doing in here anyway?”
“Inspecting the work, Boss.”
“What do you think?”
“See, that’s the beauty of being a dog, Boss. We don’t have to think.”
Looks like a fun job, John. At least the dogs are enjoying it.

For some reason, I thought Twiggy was calling that shovel a stick. Took me far too long to realize she found an actual one.

They might not have to think, but all of that work in the yard brings a whole new level of excitement. They’re as curious as cats, LOL!

They are. That’s why the fence had to be put up. Lucy loved to dig in the dirt. (and lay down in it)

You can’t blame the girls for being curious! That should make a big difference when the rains come. Of course, that means Twiggy is cut off from puddles. It makes me laugh that Lucy doesn’t like to get her paws wet!

Twiggy loves the rain. Lucy not so much.

That oak is a giving tree. Too cute. Good thing you had them out there to supervise, huh? Belly scratches for the girls.

I have to agree with Mae, John – your girls are curious as cats. Bond has to inspect everything new inside or outside the house.

Hot work John. Keep the hydration kit handy. And some for the girls too. Inspecting is hard work.

Yes, inspecting and making lists are the hardest chores of all.

Always nice to have supervisors on hand for such tasks, isn’t it, John? My husband was trying to fix a pipe under the sink the other day and our Lab did his level best to crawl *into* the cabinet for a better view of the proceedings. It was a riot, though (ahem) less than helpful my hubby would argue… 😉

Looks like you’re doing a fine job, John. I have to dig up and replace a section of drain tile in the back yard later this fall. Roots got in and there’s no way to clean them out. If I need help, I know who to call.

Nice to have some building inspectors in the family. I’ve never heard of a dog who didn’t like to get her feet wet.

Lucy is very particular about getting wet. We used to have a kiddie pool and she refused to go in it ever.

Our dog gets on her side in the kiddie pool and flails her legs like she’s swimming. It’s pretty funny.

They say that curiosity can kill a cat, but your girls are going strong. I’m not surprised that Twiggy likes chewing on a twig, or that she likes the taste of oak. There’s a reason we use it for barbeque!
