“I don’t know, Twiggy. Looks pretty hot.”
“Hey, Dad. What’s the temperature.”
“Um, let’s see. Right now, it is 95 degrees Fahrenheit which is 35 degrees Celcius. You want a feels like temperature on that?”
“Thanks, Dad. I think 95 feels hot enough.”
“Tell you what, Little one. I’m not going to making any sudden moves.”
“What does he mean when he says “feels like?”
“That is a relative temperature taking into account wind and humidity.”
“So what is the feels like temperature right now?”
“Well, the phone says it feels like 106 degrees Fahrenheit, which is 41.1 degrees Celcius.”
“Before I ask where you got a phone, I need to rest.”
“I happen to look at the boss’s phone for the weather.”
“Oh well, that explains it. Why are you laying in the sun?”
“It feels good on my bones.”
“But aren’t you burning up?”
“No. I’m not moving, so it is like being in a dry sauna.”
“I see. Wait. What is a sauna?”
“A place that has hot rocks, and you sit in there and sweat.”
“Sounds like something crazy humans would do. Resting is better.”
I’m with Twiggy on the sauna thing. Never been a fan of sweating. I think people should pay more attention to the ‘feels like’ temp too. Tired of being told that it isn’t that bad by someone who is standing in air conditioning and looking at the weather channel.

Hot temps everywhere, John. My friend in Phoenix is baking at 118 and we are reveling in 90+ degrees “air you can wear” here in Florida. I think the girls may need one of those misters on the porch to keep them cool and refreshed. 😉

Clearly, Twiggy and Lucy aren’t one bit mad — Noel Coward wasn’t writing about them when he penned his lyrics:
Mad dogs and Englishmen
Go out in the midday sun,
The Japanese don’t care to.
The Chinese wouldn’t dare to,
Hindoos and Argentines sleep firmly from twelve to one.
But Englishmen detest a siesta.
In the Philippines
There are lovely screens
To protect you from the glare.
In the Malay States
There are hats like plates
Which the Britishers won’t wear.
At twelve noon
The natives swoon
And no further work is done.
But mad dogs and Englishmen
Go out in the midday sun.

I think the Finnish approach to saunas are the weirdest; it’s a ball-dropping minus 20 outside so they built up a hot sweat and having done the hard work go leap in a lake that’s cold enough to change your gender in milliseconds. London is basking in 25C and that’s plenty hot enough. Still, Wimbledon starts Monday so it’s bound to rain.
