Keith Channing is still doing NA/No, so today is another finger point prompt. Today’s prompt came from the book Eternal Road – The final stop by the bon vivant John W. Howell. The book was opened to a random page, and with eyes closed, the finger was placed on the page. Here is a shot of that event.
You can see the page is 72, and the finger is on the word ‘wall.’

“In December, I guess. Why?”
“To be blunt. These finger things are a little boring. I was looking at the book and noticed that the guy leaning against the wall is William Travis.”
“Yes, that’s correct.”
“Of Alamo fame.”
“Yeah, and the county where the capital of Texas is located is named Travis county.”
“Instead of some dumb prompt, why don’t we read the book?”
“We don’t have time to read a book. Besides, we need to talk about the word ‘wall.'”
“That sounds way too exciting for me.”
“Come on. We can discuss the Berlin Wall, a wall of flame, the Great Wall of China, and any other wall you want to mention.”
“I suppose we could get into a wall of water or a wailing wall. I suppose you are right. There are several walls that we could talk about.”
“So, where do you want to start?”
“How about Wall, South Dakota?”
“Huh?”
“You know The Wall of the Badlands. On the way to Mt Rushmore, Deadwood and The Crazy Horse monument.”
“I haven’t heard much about it.”
“It’s the biggest thing in town. It was founded in 1931 and got its start by offering free ide water.”
“That sounds like an interesting place.”
“There are over 5000 signs around the world advertising the free ice water.”
“Is that all they have?”
“They now have over 50,000 square feet of retail space and all kinds of food and drink.”
“Sound like a place to visit.”
“In the summer 20,000 people stop by.”
“Remind me to stay home in the summer.”
“Winter might be a problem.”
“How so?”
“They get 16 feet of snow in the winter.”
“Feet?”
“Yup.”
“That is a wall of snow.”
“Cheap shot.”
“My blog.”

I think the finger-point prompts from “the bon vivant John W. Howell” are fun. I’m sure you miss the photo prompts, but I’ve enjoyed these just as much.

We had over 10’ one winter (80” in January) and I was having trouble finding a place to throw it.

What.a terrific concept to prompt a post, John; and educational, too. Now we, your readers, know more about The Wall of the Badlands. And your prompt word also prompts my veering off in a different (but still related) discussion.
What about defensive attitudes that prompt people to erect invisible walls around themselves (just as formidable and impenetrable as the brick and mortar); the type that get in the way of human understanding, the awareness that, deep down, we are more alike than different from one another; walls that inhibit problem solving, and, yes, even friendship. Just deconstruct the word “defensive” down to its root, sub in the letter “c” the word “fence” emerges, yet, another type of wall.

Great story to go with your finger point! I’ve been to Wall Drug!! Those signs got to us on our EPIC trip back in 83. We just had to stop and try the water, and we bought several souvenirs. It was well worth the stop.

I miss Keith, but am loving your finger prompts, John. I have never heard of Wall, South Dakota, so I learned something. I kept waiting for you to mention the million dollar failed wall between Texas and Mexico. 🙂 Loved the reference to Travis!! Makes me want to re-watch The Alamo!

I stopped in Wall, SD!!! I remember my then-husband (before Mick) and I laughing at all the signs announcing it. And yes, they did start off with offering free water. Too funny. And nice to know someone else who knows of it 🙂
