Well, Little One, the year 2021 is almost finished.”
“Do we get another one?”
“Why yes, we get another one. It’s called 2022.”
“So why do the years keep changing?”
“Gee, no one has ever asked me that before.”
“You have to wonder. The same question could be, why do the clocks change?”
“The years change because humans need to mark time. They want to know where they’ve been and where they are going.”
“What about the clocks?”
“You have me there, Little One. I can’t think of a good answer.”
“Anything special we need to do when the year changes?”
“We can make up some New Year resolutions.”
“You have to explain more about that. What are resolutions?”
“So many questions. Let’s just say you promise yourself that you will be a better dog in the next year.”
“I thought I was the best I could be already.”
“For instance. Maybe you not bark the UPS person to St Louis.”
“Oh, so resolutions are giving up what you love to do?”
“No, I think it is more thinking of others more than yourself.”
“So the UPS guy doesn’t like the barking, and if I gave it up, he would be happier?”
“You have hit the nail on the head, Little One. I think you have the idea.”
“Between you and me? That’s not going to happen. I’ll have to think of another resolution. Maybe giving up snowboarding.
“Well, you work on it. In the meantime, I hope Dad resolves to do something about these leaves.
Hmm… resolutions are giving up what you love to do? Sums it up for me. Happy New Year John, to you and those you care for.

I think I’ve outgrown resolutions or at least they’ve faded far into the sunsets of life. You’ve tackled it well through the pups, John. Giving up snowboarding seems like a good resolution to me. 😁

I thought snowboarding was a perfict thing to give up. Like you, I have cast off the notion of resolutions. Almost seems like a waste of time. 😁

That resolution to give up snowboarding reminds me of our junior high resolutions to give up watermelon during Lent. Legalism always can find a way out, as it seems Twiggy already has discovered! Happy New Year to them both — and to you!

Thank you Tim. As an aside I graduated from Michigan State University and you have nailed that part of the geography in the Valley Walker. I also spent 70 days in Sparrow hospital after a car accident and spent 3 years working at my first job in Lansing MI. (Small world)

Wow! It IS a small world. I lived in Mason, MI for about 18 years and worked in Lansing until I got transferred over here. Now I’m in Shelby Township, north of Detroit.

I know where that is. I grew up in Detroit. Lived in the city till I was 15 and then moved to Birmingham for high school.

Yes, The UPS guy would be lost. Thank you on the flowers and vines. The cross vines are doing really well. We have struggled with the hibiscus but I think we found its happy place. Our hanging baskets are doing really well and at the end of January they will get a redo. It has taken some time to find out where everyone is happy. Thanks again, Jacquie.

We originally wanted to have Jasmine but the landscaper told us they attract snakes. Of course, we didn’t want that so we went for Cross-vines. They get an orange trumpet like flower twice a year. Not sure they are hardy though.

Wow, I didn’t know that about jasmine! I read the crossvine gets beautiful fall colors, as well. It says good to 6B, so we have a chance 🙂

I can hear the apologists already. Listen, the man definitely needs help and I hope he gets it. But it’s obvious the sport is not where he should be. This is a tough business and if your mind isn’t where it needs to be, bad shit is going to happen. On the field and off.
