Saturday Stream of Consciousness – Prompt – “Comp”

A picture of a string with drops of water- the logo for SoCS

Walking toward the coffee maker in the kitchen, a flash out of the corner of my eye caused me to look out the window into the backyard. Sure enough, something had fallen onto the turf. Not wanting to hallucinate, the decision is made to get coffee and then investigate the object.

The machine did its thing, and after several sips of the frothy caffeine-laden liquid, it was time to venture to what should be an astounding discovery. Reaching for the rear doorknob, a text message on my phone caused a momentary distraction. It was a text from the Bellagio Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. They offer to comp a room for five nights provided; I bring bags of money to “invest.”

Setting the text aside in my mind, the problem of what landed in the yard had to be addressed. Being cautious out of fear of three-dimensional cartoon characters, the approach to the object could only be described as serpentine. Finally reaching what appears to be a pile of fabric, it occurs that this cannot be connected to cartoons and looks like a banner towed behind an airplane. Unrolling the banner took some energy and space. It was a huge message from Linda Hill. (of course) When finally unrolled, it said. Your Friday prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is “comp.” Find a word that starts with or contains “comp” and use it in your post. Enjoy!

Comp. by John W. howell © 2022

“Where did the complicated banner come from?”

“I have no idea. I think it fell off the back of an airplane. Maybe the attachment was compromised.”

“It is a complex situation. ”

“You are unusually complimentary today.”

“I only mean that it is hard to comprehend a banner falling into the yard.”

“I think to complete the prompt, that’s the only thing that could happen.”

“I guess you are right. The action has to be compatible with the post.”

“I’m glad you can comprehend that fact.”

“Compassion is my middle name.”

“I’m worried that you would use compassion as a component of your understanding.”

“It just is one of the comprised emotions.”

“You have other companions?”

“Yeah, like compensate.”

“What do you mean, compatriot?”

“Skip the comp words, and let’s go drink. You’re buying.”

“Compulsiveness, I love it. Let’s go.”

“That’s the last one, right?”

“Completely.”

  1. The lengths you must go through to get to these Saturday challenges, that alone makes you deserving of a round. Nothing compares, my man.

  6. Eventually this will compute. Or as Spock said brew the coffee. Do not beam past go. Until then all else is illogical and compromised.

  7. Compliments on a job well done, John. I love the intro, and hey, things that fall have to land somewhere. The way things have been going, I’m not surprised it landed in your yard. I imagine the cartoon “X” painted on your lawn.

  10. John, make sure you’re completely awake and alert before picking up stuff from your yard. Remember, you do have dogs. You don’t want to head to the bar with ‘compost’ under your fingernails. 🥴

As long as you were comped appropriately, I guess, that’s neither here nor there 😉

  23. Speaking of which, I have read your entire composition.
I need digestion time. When I’m nearing a post/review thing that only I can do, because I don’t know how to do a real review, I will comport with dignity.

I wanted to work in the word compost, but it just wasn’t fitting!

You have a ripe, rich imagination. Congratulations!

    1. Thank you, Resa. The word compost is a tough one. Hard to drop in normal converstaion. Like “So speaking of compost how’s your next novel going, John.?”

        I see what you mean.
I think more normal would be… “the indoor mice sure like your compost”!

      4. Of course, they are pretty easy to please. Anyone check with the outdoor mice?

        Liked by 1 person

      5. OICH! I’m not 100% sure…. but I think the indoor mice are inviting the outdoor mice in for dinner!
My 2 spoiled cats put up a massive front at the baseboards. Jeep wakes me up about 6 times from 3-7 am, noting the baseboards with great acuteness.
I keep telling them “watch the compost!”
Then they go have cat baths.

We got some catch and release traps. N’s trap caught one. He took it about an eighth of a mile away down the alleys, and released it. He wasn’t 100% sure, but he thought he saw the mouse run past him towards the house.

      6. They have trackers and can find you anytime they want.

      7. It makes me crazy. The sales guy said we have to release the mice at least 2 miles away. What? They are catch and release traps, not drive and release.

I dreamt of a sitcom: “300’s Company Too”.
A comedy; most of it takes place in a car while the couple drives around releasing mice all over the city. Witty banter, mouse jokes. Sometimes they stop and buy more traps.

        Liked by 1 person

      8. Ha ha ha. I think you need to think up a better mouse trap.
