Top Ten Things Not to Do On Memorial Day

As I have written on past Memorial Days, all ten things not to do on this day are the same. Do not fail to remember those who gave their lives to keep us free.

I hope you have a peaceful and thoughtful Memorial Day.

    1. Very true, Noelle. Very few of the Greatest Generation are left.

  6. You already know how I feel. I was looking at the graves at Arlington with a flag on each one. How the soldier uses his boot to make sure it’s placed down correctly,

My Dad fought during WWII and wasn’t the same when he came back, I just never knew why since he never spoke of it. All so humbling John. Thanks.

    1. I think a day of gratitude is not too much to ask for what all these people did for us. I think humbling is a great choice of words.

      1. I just can’t imagine what it was, or is like, to have to go to war as I sit here in my comfort imperfect or otherwise, while they wrestle with the voices locked in their heads. It never occurred to me war may have been why my father drank the way he did. Yes, it was in his genes, but so was what he saw from that fighter plane he gallantly flew. sigh

      2. For some the demons that have to be drowned are too stong. It is a lonely struggle. Your dad’s generation were not big on sharing stories that probably could have helped them deal with what they witnessed. They coped as best they could. My dad was a naval avaitor and came home with grey hair and died five years later. Alcohol was not an issue but I do think the stress had an effect. Their call to duty was in spite of personal consequences. They were indeed the greatest generation.

      3. It wasn’t till I read all those Lynne Olson books about WWII that I really started to get it. What an eye opener for me, especially after reading The Murrow Boys. My compassion for soldiers everywhere increased to the fullest. God only knows what our fathers saw. sigh
