Thursday – A Little Personal – Twiggy and Tempeste Have a Snowman Toy

“What’s your favorite part of playing with snowmen, Twiggy?”

“I like pulling his arms. A nice twisted cord with a knot at the end.”

“I like making him squeak till everyone in the house wonders what’s going on.”

“That’s okay till you get to the stuffing and the squeaker is out.”

“Oh yeah. Then all heck breaks loose.”

“Well, you have to admit, Mom is trying to keep you out of the vet’s office.

“Lucky for us, we haven’t had to go. But it’s not from a lack of trying.”

“Watch those feet, will ya. I don’t know why you try so hard to rip toys apart.”

“I wish I could tell you. Maybe it’s the panther in me.”

“You sure give us all moments of concern.”

“Big stretch. What moments?”

“Well, like when a toy is ripped, and a big chunk is missing.”

” Feels good to stretch. We have had a few of those moments. Lucky for me, nothing came of it.”

“You can say that again. Good thing you have the stomach of a hippopotamus.”

“Oh, good shake. Well, now that I’m older, I don’t do that as much.”

“Except when you hit the leaves.”

“Okay, all this talk about eating things has me tired out.”

“I think I’ll join you.”

Tuesday – Anything Possible – Finger Point Prompt – “Quality”

Today I opened Eternal Road – The final stop to page 205. With eyes closed, I pointed to the page. The word closest to my finger is “quality.” No, that isn’t dirt on my finger. It’s a bruise from heaven knows where or how.

Quality by John W. Howell © 2026

“It’s the quality that counts.”

“To me, they all look the same.”

“Well, I can assure you they are not.”

“So what’s the difference?”

“For one, the outside needs to be blemish-free and uniform in color.”

“Okay, a nice uniform brown.”

“Yes.”

“What else?”

“They need to be fresh.”

“How can you tell?”

“You look to see that they are moving. You don’t want one that has passed.”

“I pretty much grab one without all this scrutiny. Never checked to see that they are moving.”

“Which gives rise to an old saying.”

“What’s that?”

“A saying that describes someone who is not very discerning.”

“Okay, I give. What’s the saying?”

“Like a duck on a junebug.”

“I resemble that.”

“No kidding. Like every Mallard on the planet.”

“You Muscovys are so stuck up.”

“Look, junebug.”

“I’m on it.”

Top Ten Things Not to Do on the First Tax Day in 1861.

This post was first published on August 5th, 2019, which was the anniversary of the establishment of a tax to help pay for the Civil War. Since April 15th is coming up fast, I thought it might be fun to time-travel back to 1861 to get a feel of what it was like. Of course, there are rules to follow, so this list was developed to help stay out of trouble.

Top Ten Things Not to Do on the First Tax Day in 1861.

10 On the first tax day, do not try to find an H&R Block office for relief. If you do, at best, it will be an ice supply house. At worse, you will raise so much concern from those you ask that they will point you out to the tax collector. (The belief that you are trying to avoid your tax obligation is what landed you behind bars, Issac. Just tell them you made a mistake and intend to pay, and maybe they’ll let you go.)

9 On the first tax day, do not tell Tiny the WWF champ that he can’t come in to assess your net worth. If you do, at best, he will come in anyway. At worst, Tiny, who just left his rejection support group meeting, will reduce the place to sawdust. (The upside to Tiny’s visit, Iulio, is that you have no assets and therefore don’t owe any tax. Let’s not talk of the downside.)

8 On the first tax day, do not try to deduct your stay and meals as a business expense. If you do, at best, you will be laughed out of the room. At worse, the tax collector will call the Marshall, and you’ll be labeled as the first tax fraud case in the US. (The first tax was a 3% flat rate over 800 dollars ($13,000 today) of income, Iwdael. There are no deductions. Now tell the man you are sorry and cough up the money.)

7 On the first tax day, do not carry your “No Taxation Without Representation” protest sign. If you do, at best, no one will be able to read. At worst, you will be invited to spend the night at the Hoosegow Hotel. (These new revenuers have no sense of humor, Izeyah. I wouldn’t press my luck any further.)

6 On the first tax day, do not try to pay your taxes with corn. If you do, at best, the agent will think you are joking. At worst, the interpretation is that you are trying to evade your taxes. (You have to admit, Izreal trying to unload 100 bushels of corn in the tax office looks a little suspicious. You’ll find a broom and a shovel in the corner. Best to clean up the mess before you leave.)

5 On the first tax day, do not try to convince the tax collector that you are part of the 97% of the population that does not earn 800 dollars a year. If you do, at best, the collector will respect your attempt at avoiding the tax. At worse, the collector just declared to his staff that the next person who tries to lie about their income will be shot. (I think you’d better cough up the tax quickly, Ian. That collector is resting his hand on a very big six-shooter.)

4 On the first Tax day, do not show up in your most elegant clothes on the best horse. If you do, at best, the collector won’t notice. At worst, since your clothes and horse are better than the collector’s, your bill will be higher than it should be. (At this stage, Ibrahim, you might as well just pay it. Why you didn’t think to wear those old shoes and overalls is beyond me. You could have parked your horse down the street, too.)

3 On the first tax day, do not try to dazzle the tax collector with stacks of paperwork proving your lack of income. If you do, at best, you will be ignored. At worse, the agent will assume you are up to something illegal and double your tax assessment. (It would have been better just to tell them the truth, Igore. After all, 3% is not a lot to pay.)

2 On the first tax day, do not put in an application to join the IRS. If you do, at best, no one will understand you. At worst, you’ll give away your time traveler status since the IRS wasn’t established until 1862. (Well, easy come, easy go, Ishmael. It is now time to hit the bricks and get back to your own timezone. Otherwise, you might be spending a lot of time in a very damp and chilly place.)

1 On the first tax day, do not think you can tell the tax collector to send you a bill. If you do, at best, the collector will share a laugh with you. At worst, the collector will take measures to collect the tax today. ( That big guy in the corner is the enforcer, Ignatius. It is his job to extract the payment right now. He has been known to hold some by their ankles until the money falls to the floor. Just save us all the misery and pay the bill.)

Stream of Consciousness Saturday – Prompt – Hide

A picture of a string with drops of water- the logo for SoCS

The coffee machine touchscreen is in the hide mode. One touch of the two coffee selection brings it to life.  The aroma of freshly ground beans fills the air, and the soothing syrup slowly fills the cup. The low caffeine warning horn in my head goes silent with the first sip. The second sip brings another annoying sound of the front doorbell. While the Westminster chimes threaten to cause a brain bleed, Tiggy and Tempeste join in trying to bark the intruder to St. Louis. A toss of treats into the soundproof room and a slam of the door ends the torture not a moment too soon.

A glance at the monitor reveals a fluffy bunny holding an Easter basket containing an envelope and a clipboard. By now used to the highway robbery that goes on with deliveries, no conversation is necessary. The security shutdown process is begun.

The SWAT team needs to be put on standby. A quick text to the leader confirms that status. Also, the flight of A-10 Warthogs must be diverted. Another call to the commander puts that worry to rest. The SEAL team needs to be called off, and a call to the leader makes that possible. The MH-60 Jayhawk Helicopter hovering over the house is diverted. A call to the tow truck driver stops the deployment of an M1A1 Abrams Tank. The control panel simplifies the security system’s shutdown process. The boiling oil vats are put on standby, the turret mortars disengaged, the Trebuchet on safety, the concertina wire rolled, the Claymore mines reset, the tower Gatling guns on safety, the moat net dropped, the alligators fed, and the IEDs and shoulder-held rockets put away.  The Proton torpedoes switched off. The gamma ray beams covered. The high-powered maser guns switched to standby, and the nanorobots were chained in the basement. The Klingons are called back, and the Targ is caged. Robbie’s Bot is sent to the basement.  The Tasmanian Devil is directed to the food in his cage, and the door drops. The electronic jammer is kept active, given a situation with a robot not too long ago. The locks on the door are thrown. And the door opened.

The bunny hands me the envelope and the clipboard. After the signature and handing it back, the bunny’s paw signals the expectation of a tip. Obliging, the following words of advice are given. “Do not hide eggs where they can’t be found.” Stepping back through the door and giving it a good slam, my attention turns to the envelope.

Inside is a message from Linda Hill. It reads: Your Friday prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is “hide.” Use it anyway you’d like. Enjoy!

Hide by John W. Howell © 2026

“Only you would stiff the Easter Bunny.”

“He got a valuable tip. You know what happens to the eggs that are not found?”

“No, what happens?”

“They rot and smell like…well, rotten eggs.”

“But to hide them where they can be found is not really hiding them.”

“The whole idea is to pretend to hide them, isn’t it?”

“I guess that is one way to look at it.”

“Speaking of hiding things, did you order an Uber?”

“Right over there.”

“You are joking.”

“No. That is our ride.”

“In the cab or in the trailer?”

“Your choice. I will say the trailer has some nice goodies in it.”

“Like what?”

“Ritz Bits for one.”

“I do like those. So what’s the catch?’

“Catch?”

“Come on. There is always a catch.”

“Okay, we have to help the driver unload the trailer at the supermarket.”

“Big job?”

“Naw, there is a conveyor, and the cases are light.”

“Okay, let’s go.”

“The hidden reward will be Ritz Bits with our VooDoo Rangers when we get to the pub.”

“You going to hide a case under your shirt?”

“No, the driver said we could have a box.”

“A whole box?”

“Don’t get greedy.”

“Fine.”

Today’s good news comes from Science Daily. Thanks to Noelle Granger for sending it in

Scientists uncovered the nutrients bees were missing — Colonies surged 15-fold

A lab-made diet supercharged bee colonies and could help save our food supply.

Date: March 27, 2026

Source: University of Oxford

A team of researchers led by the University of Oxford has developed a breakthrough food supplement that could help reverse the alarming decline of honeybees.

Working with Royal Botanic Gardens Kew, the University of Greenwich, and the Technical University of Denmark, the scientists engineered a diet that mimics the key nutrients bees normally get from pollen.

When tested, colonies fed this supplement produced up to 15 times more young. The findings were published in the journal Nature.

Bees Are Starving for the Right Nutrients

Honeybees rely on pollen as their main food source. It contains essential lipids called sterols that are critical for growth and development.

But climate change and intensive farming have reduced the variety of flowers bees depend on. As a result, bees are increasingly missing key nutrients.

Beekeepers often use artificial pollen substitutes made from protein flour, sugars, and oils. These provide calories but lack the sterols bees need, leaving colonies nutritionally deficient.

A Lab-Made Solution Using Engineered Yeast

To fill this gap, researchers engineered the yeast Yarrowia lipolytica to produce a precise mix of six essential sterols.

They added this yeast to bee diets and tested it over three months in controlled glasshouse experiments. The enclosed setup ensured bees ate only the experimental feed.

Colonies Grew Faster and Stayed Healthier

The results were dramatic. Colonies receiving the enriched diet produced up to 15 times more larvae that reached the pupal stage compared with those on standard diets.

They also continued raising brood throughout the entire study period. Colonies without sterols stopped producing brood after about 90 days.

Even more striking, the nutrient profile of larvae matched that of bees feeding naturally, suggesting the supplement closely replicates real pollen nutrition.

Scientists Say This Could Be a Game Changer

Senior author Professor Geraldine Wright (Department of Biology, University of Oxford), said: “Our study demonstrates how we can harness synthetic biology to solve real-world ecological challenges. Most of the pollen sterols used by bees are not available naturally in quantities that could be harvested on a commercial scale, making it otherwise impossible to create a nutritionally complete feed that is a substitute for pollen.”

Lead author Dr. Elynor Moore (Department of Biology, University of Oxford at the time of the study, now Delft University of Technology) added: “For bees, the difference between the sterol-enriched diet and conventional bee feeds would be comparable to the difference for humans between eating balanced, nutritionally complete meals and eating meals missing essential nutrients like essential fatty acids. Using precision fermentation, we are now able to provide bees with a tailor-made feed that is nutritionally complete at the molecular level.”

Cracking the Code of Bee Nutrition

To figure out what bees actually need, researchers analyzed tissues from pupae and adult bees. This required extremely delicate lab work, including dissecting individual nurse bees.

They identified six key sterols that dominate bee biology: 24-methylenecholesterol, campesterol, isofucosterol, β-sitosterol, cholesterol, and desmosterol.

CRISPR and Yeast Make It Scalable

Using CRISPR-Cas9 gene editing, the team programmed Yarrowia lipolytica to produce these sterols efficiently.

This yeast was chosen because it naturally produces lipids, is safe for food use, and can be scaled up for industrial production. The final supplement is made by growing the yeast in bioreactors and drying it into a powder.

Why This Matters for Food and Farming

Honeybees help produce more than 70% of major global crops. But their populations are under severe pressure from poor nutrition, climate change, parasites, disease, and pesticides.

In the U.S., annual colony losses have ranged from 40 to 50% in recent years and could reach as high as 60 to 70% in 2025.

This new supplement could strengthen bee health without increasing competition for limited wildflowers. It may even evolve into a complete nutritional feed.

Helping Wild Bees Too

Co-author Professor Phil Stevenson (RBG Kew and Natural Resources Institute, University of Greenwich) added: “Honey bees are critically important pollinators for the production of crops such as almonds, apples, and cherries, and so are present in some crop locations in very large numbers, which can put pressure on limited wildflowers. Our engineered supplement could therefore benefit wild bee species by reducing competition for limited pollen supplies.”

A Potential Breakthrough for Beekeepers

Danielle Downey (Executive Director of honeybee research nonprofit Project Apis m., not affiliated with the study) said: “We rely on honey bees to pollinate one in three bites of our food, yet bees face many stressors. Good nutrition is one way to improve their resilience to these threats, and in landscapes with dwindling natural forage for bees, a more complete diet supplement could be a game-changer. This breakthrough discovery of key phytonutrients that, when included in feed supplements, allow sustained honey bee brood rearing has immense potential to improve outcomes for colony survival, and in turn the beekeeping businesses we rely on for our food production.”

What Happens Next

Larger field trials are still needed to confirm long-term benefits. If successful, the supplement could reach farmers within two years.

The same technology could also be adapted to support other pollinators or farmed insects, opening new paths for sustainable agriculture.

The good news in this story is that science is helping nature. Today’s JohnKu talks about science. I hope you have a super weekend.

Thursday – A Little Personal – Twiggy and Tempeste in the Jungle

“The Panther looks over and sees two victims. A hapless Puma or helpless chicken.”

“Brother, so the drama begins.”

The Panther decides it will be Chicken Licken for lunch.”

“Nice illiteration there, Panther.”

“The Panther decides to take her prey to the mountain top for a peaceful meal.”

“Where else is there to go? No trees in sight.”

“The Panther struggles under the weight of the huge chicken.”

“That stuffed chicken is almost weightless.”

“Finally, to the top of the mountain. The Panther checks to make sure all is secure.”

“I would not open your mouth, Miss Panther. That raging river below could sweep your prey away.”

The Panther holds the prey and tells the Puma to buzz off.”

“The Puma can’t bear to watch what happens next.”

“Arrrrg, the chicken slips from the Panther’s grasp and falls in the raging water below.”

“The Puma resists saying ‘I told you so'”

“The Puma, feeling pangs of hunger, approaches Cocoa and Doughdoe.”

“Like you would ever see those two as prey.”

“The Panther decides to forget the prey and think more about beating up the Puma.”

“The Puma thinks and then says  out loud, ‘Bring it on, Panther.'”

“How about tomorrow?”

“Deal.”

Tuesday – Anything Possible – Finger Point Prompt –

Today I randomly opened Circumstances of Childhood to page 127. I closed my eyes and pointed to the page. My finger is closest to the word “urgent.” That is our prompt today.

Urgent by John W. Howell © 2026.

“Hurry up.”

“What’s the deal?”

“It’s urgent.”

“What?”

“The thing you have to see.”

“For heaven’s sake. You are moving like someone possessed.”

“Well. I don’t want it to go away.”

“This must be pretty important.”

“Not important, just interesting.”

“Have you seen it before?”

“Yeah, of course. You will get a kick out of this. too.”

“I hope it is worth being almost out of breath for.”

“Don’t worry, it will be worth it.”

“Are we almost there?”

“Yup, see that outcropping right ahead?”

“Yeah.”

“We need to be under it.”

“Okay, that is easy. Now that we are here, what am I looking for?

“Wait one minute.”

“Uh huh.”

“There it is.”

“What is it?”

“A stupid worm on a hook.”

“Wait. You mean one of those idiots thinks he can catch us with a lousey worm?”

“That’s right.”

“Oh my gosh. What trout in its right mind is going to go for that?”

“My thoughts exactly.”

“Whoa. Did you see that?”

“Yeah, that stupid bluegill came out of nowhere.”

“I hope he enjoys being a guest at dinner.”

“Ha ha ha. What a dope. Hold on, is that a mayfly?”

“Where?”

“Out by that rock. Just floating.”

“Be careful.”

“Right there are plenty of mayflies somewhere where these worm baters aren’t.”

“Look, another one.”

“Yup. Let’s get out of here.”

Top Ten Things Not to Do While Trying to Attract Other Authors to Do a Top Ten List

Photo by Sean Foster on Unsplash

This post was published on July 21, 2014. For some reason, I had it in my mind that another author would like to co-write the top ten not-to-do lists with me. I learned a valuable lesson, but it was a fun list, so I’m sharing it again. No, I am not soliciting another co-author.

Top Ten Things Not to Do While Trying to Attract Other Authors to Do a Top Ten List

10. If you are trying to attract other authors for a top ten-guest appearance, do not make them believe they will become rich and famous. If you do, at best, they will overlook the one “like” and still speak to you. At worst, they could find a way to troll your blog for the rest of your life.

9.  If you are trying to attract other authors for a top ten-guest appearance, do not try to write a top ten list for them. If you do, at best, you will probably include information that makes no sense. At worst, you might unintentionally include embarrassing information that the author had no idea you knew, and which will put you on the author’s hate list for all time.

8.  If you are trying to attract other authors for a top ten-guest appearance, do not lead them to believe it is easy. If you do, at best, you may never get the author to guest blog again. At worst, you may receive unpleasant e-mails from your former colleague requesting that you place your list where the sun doesn’t shine.

7.  If you are trying to attract other authors for a top ten-guest appearance, do not think you won’t need a post for that day. If you do, at best, you will be scrambling to put together something at the last minute. At worst, you will publish an incoherent post that is so off the mark you’ll want to enroll in a witness protection program and will be willing to commit a crime to do so.

6. If you are trying to attract other authors for a top ten-guest appearance, do not force the subject. If you do, at best, you may end up with a top ten list of nothing. At worst, you will no doubt antagonize your readers with the junk produced and will have made an enemy for life of the author.

5. If you are trying to attract other authors for a top ten-guest appearance, do not insist on running your own media. If you do, at best, your media will have absolutely no tie-in to the list. At worst, you will have the pleasure of enjoying your media selection alone, a state that may prove permanent.

4. If you are trying to attract other authors for a top ten-guest appearance, do not set up a set of pre-publish rules that may be impossible to follow. If you do, at best, you may find yourself listless on Monday. At worst, you may cause what has been a lovely relationship with the author to degenerate into twelve paces at dawn, and you don’t know how to fire a flintlock pistol.

3. If you are trying to attract other authors for a top ten-guest appearance, do not promise food or money for participation. If you do, at best, you will need to figure out a way to select the best lists. At worst, you may be put in a position of turning down beautiful lists because you have run out of money and food, turning those you don’t accept into lifelong Voodoo practitioners.

2. If you are trying to attract other authors for a top ten-guest appearance, do not offer to guest post on their blog in return. If you do, at best, you might get a nibble or two. At worst, you will be listening to the crickets for a long time since none of those who are offered really want you to guest post.

1. If you are trying to attract other authors for a top ten-guest appearance, do not plead, beg, cry, or kick your feet. If you do, at best, your fellow bloggers will find a way to unfollow you. At worst, you will broadcast your desperation, which, in the jungle as well as in the blogosphere, can lead to being pounced upon by hungry lions.
