Thursday – A Little Personal – Lucy and Twiggy Outside

“Lucy. The umbrella isn’t up.”

“Yeah, I can see that. I’ll call the boss.

“You get a hold of him?”

“Yeah, he’s coming. Sounds like he was heavy into his book.”

“Well, he is pretty quick whatever he was doing.”

“That is a good thing except at bathtime.”

“Why are you still laying out in the yard?”

“I love the sun. It is warm and feels good.”

“I was just about to join you, and you passed out.”

“Just resting my eye, Little one.”

“You coming here or not?”

“Just a few more minutes.”

“Might as well make myself comfortable.”

“You like it?”

Lucy and Twiggy

Rather have the shade.”

“Okay, I’ll come and do the lounge lizard impersonation.”

There is a lot of sun on my lounge.”

“Maybe the boss will come out and adjust it.”

“Ah no. You know how he is when he’s on a roll with a WIP. I’ll just lay here beside you.”

“You are more than welcome. Little One. Does it get any better than this?”

“Peanut butter would make it better.”

“Dream on.”

Wednesday Story Day – AKA – Hump Day

Photo of Lucy and Twiggy
“What are you doing Little One?”
“Thought I heard Friday over there.”
“Sounded like Wednesday to me.”

It is Wednesday Story Day again, and last week we found ourselves at the Chick-Fil-A and talking to the manager named Tony. Tony was a little intimidated and asked for some time to call his boss. Our gang gave him a business card (These were not ID but Vista Print $5.00 a thousand cards. Whew, I hope that clears that up). Our gang then took their coffees out to one of the tables to wait for Tony to come out. We should get over there in case Tony comes back quickly.

“You know what, Larry?”

“What, Andrew?”

“I often wonder why people line up at Chick-Fil-A.”

“I guess cause they like the chicken sandwiches.”

“But for breakfast?”

“They have other stuff like sausage, eggs, and hash browns.”

“How do you know?”

“I’ve had breakfast at a Chick-Fil-A.”

“Hey, fellas.”

“Yeah, Mike.”

“Got the judge working on a warrant now.”

“Excellent. Oh, look, here comes Tony. Well, Tony, what did you find out?”

“My boss said to cooperate with you guys. He called our lawyer, and as long as you do not think any of our employees committed a crime, we should try to help.”

“well, that’s nice of your boss and the lawyer. At this point, we do not suspect any of your employees of wrongdoing. We had a photo of a partial receipt from a pickup yesterday. Here it’s on my cell. Take it and have a look.”

“Uh-huh. Looks like it has been burned.”

“Good eye, Tony. It was burned, but these ashes still have a trace of it. Anything pop out at you?”

“There is a sequence number just below the date. Let me pull it up on my iPad. Humm. Yeah, that was a pickup order filled about 5:10 yesterday. Seven number three combos. Three sweet teas and three diet cokes and one lemonade.”

“Sounds like a big crowd. Let me ask, Tony. You guys have any surveillance cameras?”

“Sure do. Covers the drive-through from two angles. One is the window, and the second is the rear of the car. That’s was in case we had a grab and go.”

“Grab and go?”

“Before our new system, the customer would pay for the food when delivered. We used to have people take the food and then hit the gas. We now have a two-window system where we collect at the first window and fill the order from the second. We still have the camera working. There was a time when jokers would throw a drink at the server. Having the recording of the event and the license plate ensured that the police had enough to arrest the person.”

“Over a drink?”

“How about cuts and bruises. Those cups are not light.”

“Okay, I get it. So do you think you have the pick-up from yesterday on tape?”

“I’m sure we do. We have a 24-hour loop.”

“Can we get the tape?”

“I’m sure it won’t be a problem, but—”

“You’ll have to ask your boss.”

“Yes.”

“Go ahead and make the call. We’ll wait.”

“I won’t be a minute. I’ll just step over there.”

“Take all the time you need, Tony. We think the tapes will be the breakthrough we need.”

Cheeto by John W. Howell ©2021

“Hey you.”

“Who me?”

“Yeah you with the Cheeto.”

“Cheeto?”

“Yeah in your beak. A Cheeto.”

“It’s a mayfly.”

“What’s a mayfly?”

“In my beak. A mayfly.”

“Looks like a Cheeto to me.”

“What’s a Cheeto anyway.”

“Cheese corn puff.”

“Did you say cheese?”

“Yeah.”

“Where do I get some?”

“In the store.”

“What’s a store?”

“Where people buy stuff.”

“That’s that then.”

“What?”

“I stay away from people.”

“Why?”

“They might take my mayfly.”

“Trust me people don’t like flies.”

“They haven’t tried a mayfly then. By the way, what did you want?”

“I thought if you talked, you would drop the mayfly and it would be mine.”

“Not a chance. I can talk with a mayfly in my beak all day long.”

“So your mom never taught you not to talk with your mouth full?”

“No but she did teach me one thing.”

“What’s that?”

“How to take out the eye of a fresh talking stranger.”

“See ya.”

Into The Dark by Robert Hookey #newbook

Today I am delighted to welcome Robert Hookey (known in some circles as The Hook) to Fiction Favorites. I am happy for a couple of reasons. The first is I’ve been following Robert on his blog, and he has given me many hours of enjoyment with his humor. Second, Robert has a new book, and I’m excited to have him here to talk about it.

So, with that, welcome Robert. I hope you are comfortable. I would offer you a margarita, but I know that drinking alcohol is not one of your vices. I don’t do virgin drinks very well either. How about a cup of tea, eh?

First off, thank you for making this Canadian boy feel at home with the “eh?”, John. I’m currently enjoying some milk from a bag that I‘m using to wash down my Canadian back bacon. (It’s tastier than it sounds.)

Thank you, Robert. The bacon smells delicious. Now let’s get to the first question. I know you have written another book about your life in the service industry, but I’m curious about what caused you to venture into fiction?

Boredom, mostly. I had been laid off from my job as a bellman, and I was sitting at home waiting out the pandemic (which I honestly thought would be over by now) when my lovely bride urged me to write another book. She was concerned that without something to focus on, I’d become so annoying and frustrated she’d have to end me in a most gruesome manner.

I’ve always wanted to venture into the world of fiction, but I was afraid I didn’t have the write stuff. (Sorry, dad jokes have become my thing these days.) At any rate, one illuminating conversation later, another fictional scribe was born!

I’m sitting here thinking of the most gruesome way to end you, and I think it is a good thing you did turn to fiction. Into the Dark is the first book in the Infinite Crossover Crises series. Tell me a little about what Infinite Crossover Crises mean and about Into the Dark?

As a younger nerd (and even now), I’ve always loved the giant crossover events like Infinity Gauntlet and Crisis on Infinite Earths that comic book companies stage to draw all their characters together. And so now the Infinite Crossover Crisis is serving the same purpose with my own characters as well as public domain heroes like the Black Terror, Dracula, and others. I want to give all these heroes, villains, and everyone in-between a legitimate reason to come together.

And honestly, I had some emotional baggage to work through, and Into The Dark is the first step in doing that while addressing some of the real-world evils I’ve been watching from home in the last thirteen months. Some people that know me think I’m a very negative person, but I have hope in my heart, and it shines through in Into The Dark and will continue to do so as the Infinite Crossover Crisis progresses.

For the years that I have known you, I would not characterize you as negative. I think you did have the courage to visit the dark side once in a while, but only to show the rest of us how ridiculous that place really is. My next question is a standard one that I ask every author. Who is your favorite author, and why?

Stephen King. Yes, there are so many great choices out there (including you, John), but Doctor Sleep, the sequel to The Shining, has become my all-time favorite book. King ties up all the loose ends from The Shining while weaving an all-new story that gives us some of the most chilling and genuinely evil villains in all of fiction.

I have great respect for Stephen King and have to agree he is a master. Here’s the ten spot I promised if you would mention me. On Amazon, I see you have all five-star reviews. Why do you suppose your readers are so positive about your book? Is it the story or the writing or both?

Bribery. Pure and simple. But I hope it’s a mix of both. My conversational writing style seems to be hitting the right notes, and I decided to unleash my not-so-inner nerd while creating this new world, and it seems to have worked. I’ve mixed superheroes, angels powered by social media, a Southern-fried John Wick, and a ton of other super-powered whackos to give readers what I hope they see as a non-stop thrill ride.

I have to say Into The Dark is sitting on my Kindle, and I can’t wait to get to it after hearing you describe it the way you did. Can you give us a little taste of the next book in the series and when we can expect it to be available?

No spoilers, but Into The Dark ends with my heroes heading to Las Vegas after breaking into smaller teams and running individual gauntlets. Into The Grey will feature a fight that I hope makes the Battle of Helm’s Deep seem like a tea party. The rest of the book will deal with the aftermath of that Sin City donnybrook while teeing up the final installment, Into The Light.

As far as when it’ll be available… I’ve been so busy trying to promote Into The Dark that I really haven’t moved past the outline stage of Into The Grey. I really must get on that…

I love the sequence of titles, Robert. It sounds like you have placed a great deal of thought into your series. You are a Canadian by birth and currently reside on the Canadian side of Niagara Falls. In your experience, Is the literary world any different in Canada than it is in the US?

Canada is a blip on the radar compared to the US, so we have fewer agents and publishing houses to pitch to. I liken it to having to scale a mountain made of salt without any equipment while completely naked with a thousand cuts all over my body.

I have been on that mountain of salt, Robert, so I can empathize with you on the degree of difficulty. When you are not writing adventure stories, Robert, what do you for fun? Remember, this is a family blog.

Got it. I’ll be spending more time outside now that Old Man Winter has pretty much retired to your neck of the woods, John. I also spend a lot of time bonding with my daughter over shows like Chicago Fire, The Masked Singer, and Grey’s Anatomy. (Don’t judge me.)

I’ve also been reading a lot to learn what works for me as a writer and what doesn’t.

I have read some lovely posts where you and your daughter attended some Broadway shows. I think it is great that you have that kind of relationship. Thank you, Robert, for agreeing to this interview. I had a lot of fun and hope you did as well.

I look forward to our next time. Following is an excerpt and the buy links for Into the Dark and Robert’s contact information. By the way, Robert, that teacup is Limoges and is not a carryout container.

I was told there would be at least three honey-glazed donuts and a grape Fanta Big Gulp, but that’s fine; I realize budget cuts are hitting everyone hard these days, John.

Blurb:

In an all-too-familiar world controlled by ancient beings known as The Dark, heroes of every origin must assemble (yeah, I said it, sue me) to pull humanity back from the edge of annihilation – if they don’t kill each other first.

They may not be the Avengers, the Suicide Squad, hell, they may not even be the Great Lakes Avengers… but they’ve been brought together by a hero in a Green Hornet mask and leather jacket to match named Nemesis to face every form of evil imaginable. From seemingly invincible masked killers who stalk teen camp counselors to clones of Nazi super-soldiers to monsters of the human variety, Nemesis and his team of unlikely heroes will traverse the globe to dismantle The Dark’s vast power structure once and for all.

If you took The Umbrella Academy, The Boys, and The Cabin In The Woods and gave them a hearty stir you’d get Into The Dark: Book One of the Infinite Crossover Crisis, a clever, electrifying, genre-busting adventure that pits the most unconventional superheroes in the Multiverse against the embodiment of evil itself.

Into The Dark is the inaugural novel by indie author The Hook. He hopes you like it. (But if you don’t, feel free to keep it to yourself.)

Into The Dark Excerpt:

There we were: two orderlies who looked like Arnold’s German cousins, a young evil doctor whose lab coat swished as she glided across the halls of the Dusk and me, their newest patient. I was #300; apparently, a fact Doctor Death took great delight in notifying me of. I couldn’t take my eyes off the two members of the Master Race. Their chiseled features, complete with blonde hair, blue eyes, and even synchronized goose steps, were truly mesmerizing.

My fascination did not go unnoticed.

“You’re right, they’re authentic in every way, and we have dozens of them,” was Dr. Death’s response to a question that hadn’t even been asked, though it certainly was on my list.

“They really are clones of that one rumored mute Nazi super-soldier?” I knew exactly what they were, but playing the game seemed important to my captor. “And how did you know what I was thinking? Do we have a telepathic connection?”

“Certainly not.”

“Well, that’s disappointing. Especially since I feel like Patrick Stewart in a souped-up wheelchair. Except I have hair… which I guess would make me James McAvoy,” I said, though my snarky retorts and pop culture references were wasted on this singular-minded MD.

“We’re here,” she refused to speak with anything other than an emotionless tone peppered with just a hint of sultriness.

After making our way to the Dusk’s fifth level, which had the same “stuck in 1953” look as the rest of the building, we stopped at the end of the floor where a large rectangular window and a foreboding metal door awaited. It was obvious from the view this was an observation room, a cavernous one at that.

“This is an observation room,” she said. (Told ya.) “This is where you’ll learn everything you need to know about what we do here… and why that insight will be useless.”

Bio

Top Ten Things Not to do if You Think You Will Win a Contest or the Lotto

This post was originally published on May 4th, 2015. Let’s see if it still has legs.

This list was inspired by reading a story about a person who had a dream that they were a Lotto winner and went out and bought new cars before the drawing.

a lotto

Top Ten Things Not to do if You Think You Will Win a Contest or the Lotto

10 If you think you will win a contest or the Lotto, do not quit your day job until the drawing is over. If you do, at best, your boss won’t take you seriously when you give a reason for resigning. At worst, the Publisher Clearing House Award Team will knock on your door only to discover they have made a mistake, and your neighbor with the barking dog is the actual winner. (Fun stuff, huh?)

9 If you think you will win a contest or the Lotto, do not brag to your in-laws before the drawing. If you, at best, they will believe you are a little naive.  At worst, your father-in-law will present an IOU for the amount of money he has loaned to your spouse over the years. (The bill will still be due even if you don’t win.)

8 If you think you will win a contest or the Lotto, do not sign the papers for that beautiful new house until after the drawing. If you do, at best, you will be the proud owner of two homes and utterly broke. At worst, the Federal government will want to talk about the amount of income you stated on the bank loan forms of twenty million used to approve the loan. (They keep mumbling vaguely about something called bank fraud.)

7 If you think you will win a contest or the Lotto, do not tell all your friends before the drawing. If you do at best, they will want the money back for the drinks they bought you. At worst, they will think you won and are avoiding their requests for a loan. (Might want to leave town.)

6 If you think you will win a contest or the Lotto, do not put off saving for retirement. If you do, at best, you will need to keep working until you have enough to retire. At worst, you will retire and find out you needed to work more, and no one is hiring. (Especially an old dumb person.)

5 If you think you will win a contest or the Lotto, do not put your house up for sale until after the drawing. If you, at best, you will sell it and need to find another. At worst, you will sell your house and find you don’t have enough money to buy a similar value and no way to qualify for a loan. (That five-person tent looks pretty good about now.)

4 If you think you will win a contest or the Lotto, do not tell your boss exactly what you think of them before the drawing. If you do, at best, your boss will send you for a mental evaluation, and all will be forgotten. At worst, you will say things you want to retract, but you know a retraction is impossible even as you pack for your new assignment in North Korea. (Don’t forget the down-filled jacket.)

3 If you think you will win a contest or the Lotto, do not avoid setting up a college fund. If you do, at best, your kids will be so bright and talented they will win full scholarships to Ivy League schools. At worst, your kids will have to take jobs and loans to get through college and will eventually find their way back to your basement since they can’t afford a house while paying back the loans. (You would think they would offer to do the dishes just once.)

2 If you think you will win a contest or the Lotto, do not invest in that oil well with your brother-in-law before the drawing. If you do, at best, you have given your brother-in-law a gift. At worst, you will need the money you gave the brother-in-law to meet your near-term commitments since you figured you were throwing the money away and wouldn’t need it. Now you need it. (Good luck in getting it back.)

1 If you think you will win a contest or the Lotto, do not finally buy that expensive gift for your spouse before the drawing. If you do, at best, you will be a hero for the thought. At worst, you will have to return the gift and explain why you bought it in the first place. No matter how the excuse comes out, it will still sound like you have lost your mind. ( It would have been good to winterize the dog house.)

So let’s get on the bus. I was asked if we should be using an electric bus to help the environment. The bus is fueled by environmentally friendly propane.

Stream of Consciousness Saturday – Prompt “May”

A picture of a string with drops of water- the logo for SoCS

It is Stream of Consciousness Saturday time again, and as I was looking up at the rainclouds, I was hit by an envelope. It seemed to come from nowhere, and inside was what I was expecting. Yes. It was Linda Hill’s prompt. Here is what it said. “Your Friday prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is “may.” Use it any way you’d like. Have fun!” I have to find out how she does the airmail thingy. In the meantime, if you want to have fun visit Linda’s blog and read how easy it is. Here is the link.

May by John W. Howell © 2021.

“Why are you standing out in the rain with your eyes wide open?”

“I’m trying to figure something out.”

“Like what?”

“How Linda Hill gets letters to drop out of the sky.”

“That is an obscure thing to ponder. What is going on?”

“This letter came floating down ad hit me square in the face.”

“Your prompt for this week.”

“Precisely.”

“How may I help you?”

“Did you read the prompt?”

“No.”

“May is the prompt.”

“Okay. So how may I help you.”

“Help me figure out how to have fun with the word ‘may.'”

“April showers bring May flowers?”

“Sheesh. That is going to get me nothing.”

“May the bird of paradise roost in your jammies and invite his family to a reunion.”

“Did you just make that up?”

“Yeah. Like it?”

“Loathe it.”

“May all your troubles be little ones.”

“That too.”

“May the wind be at your back and the road comes up to meet you.”

“Where are you getting this stuff?”

“Wait for it..”

“Don’t do the ‘May the force be with you.'”

“Shuckens you spoined it.”

“Shuckins?”

“May I buy you a beer.”

“The best one yet. May you live long and prosper.”

“Oh, Thanks. May your lips be wet and your pants dry.”

“I think that’s ‘feet’ dry. Poor Richard’s Almanac.”

“In your case, I think mine is more appropriate.”

“You’re going to get old too you know.”

“Hahaha. Let’s get the beer.”

“may I give you a lift.”

“Quit it.”

Friday JohnKu – AKA – TGIF

“Gonna miss that patio.”
“Come on Twiggy. We need the rain.”
“But why on Friday?”
“Just to torture you.”

Another week has flown by. It is Friday again, and time to prepare for the weekend. (YAY)

Before I forget, I have a post up on Story Empire today. I have listed the top ten books that have been banned or challenged in 2020. Also, there is a list of the banned or challenged books from the 100 most significant books written. Go HERE if you would like to visit.

The first 100 days of the Biden administration is now history. The scorecard on promises made vs. promises kept looks pretty good. I still wish the left and right would quit throwing insults at each other. It just doesn’t help anything.

The producer got her second shot, so after two weeks, it looks like we will have some immunity. We are still going to be careful on the three ways to protect oneself — wash hands, distance, wear a mask. We still don’t trust air travel, so we won’t be doing any of that.

I am very sorry for the outbreaks of COVID in India. Such a large population and so difficult to get every immunized quickly. The second outbreak comes after the first and is more severe. Lax preventive care such as masks and social distancing is being blamed on the current situation. I still feel COVID is going to be around a long time.

Today’s JohnKu talks about what is normal. I hope you. All have a great weekend.

Thursday – A Little Personal – Twiggy and Lucy and Sunscreen

Lucy and Twiggy in the backyard

“Hey, Lucy. Don’t forget the sunscreen.”

“Coming Little One.”

Lucy and Twiggy in the backyard

“I don’t see a lot of sun out here, Twiggy.”

“You have to look for it.”

Lucy and Twiggy in the backyard

“Look for it? If it isn’t in the sky, where  would it be?”

“Not behind the chaise, I can tell you.”

Lucy and Twiggy in the backyard

“I’m not sure, but I think you might be disappointed.”

“I wonder if it is out front?”

“It comes from above, Twiggy.”

“Maybe there is a below element.”

“Now you are ridiculous. Everyone knows the sun is in the sky.”

“You can’t close your mind to possibilities, Lucy.”

“Hey, where you going in such a hurry?”

“Look out of the way. I have sun to find.”

Lucy and Twiggy in the backyard

“Okay then. You go, girl.”

“They laughed at Columbus you know.”

“Believe me, no one is laughing.”

Wednesday Story Day – AKA – Hump Day

Lucy and Twiggy Looking around
“I heard Friday.”
“You didn’t, Little One. That was an auditory hallucination. It’s Wednesday”
“Sure sounded like Friday.”
“Hallucinations are like that.”

It is Wednesday Story Time again, and last week our team found some ashes at the warehouse. It was a Chick-Fil-A receipt. After a thorough search of the warehouse, nothing else was found. I see the group heading for the Chick-Fil-A. If we hurry, we can get there about the same time.

“Okay, guys. We need to have a little plan here.”

“I agree, Larry. We can’t go in and show badges and expect anyone to remember anything.”

“How about I stay out here and sample the sandwich.”

“Nice try, Andrew. Come to think of it, why don’t we get with the manager and quietly explain the situation and then interview the employees out here.”

“Good idea, Larry.”

“Thanks, Mike.”

“Could we at least get a coffee?”

“Sure, Andrew. We will need to order something anyway so as not to attract attention.”

“That’s pretty funny. Three guys who look like they just stepped out of central casting of the Untouchables are trying not to attract attention.”

“Glad you get a laugh out of this, Andrew. Let’s go.”

“Right behind you.”

“Yes, sir, welcome to Chick-Fil-A. How may I serve you?”

“Uh, three coffees and some information.”

“Yes, sir. Anything else.”

“Yes. Is the manager in?”

“I’m the manager. Name is Tony.”

“Okay, Tony. My name is Larry, and I’m with the Boston Police Department. The guy behind me is Agent Moore with the FBI. The guy behind him is Andrew Cummings with the Boston Police department.”

“I-is something wrong?”

“No, Tony. Everything is fine, but we need to talk to you privately about a case we are working on.”

“Case? I-I’m not sure what you mean?”

“Don’t worry, it doesn’t involve you. We have some suspects that we have reason to believe picked up food here yesterday, and we would like to talk to you and your employees. Perhaps they know something.”

“I-I’m not sure the company would like me talking to you without their knowledge.”

“Can you call someone to get permission?”

“Yes, I can. Do you have some identification?”

“We each have cards and badges.”

“Give me your cards, and I will make the call. Here are your coffees.”

“Thank you, Tony. Here are the cards.”

“The coffee is on the house. I’ll be right back.”

“We’ll be outside. We would appreciate it if you could come out there.”

“No problem. I’ll meet you there.”

“Thanks. Tony. For the coffee and your cooperation.”

“I’m not sure he heard you. He was quick to move.”

“I’ll bet you a shot beer and a buck he’ll come back and ask us to contact his boss.”

“I don’t doubt that. If so, I’ll just get a warrant.”

“I would start working that now, Mike. Tony looks to be all of twenty, and if I were his boss, I would want him talking to us either.”

“I’m on it. Let’s go outside.”

“Come on, Andrew. Let’s enjoy this day and a fine cup of Arabica bean coffee.”

“You read the coffee sign, right?”

“Right.”
