The Departure by John W. Howell ©2019

“What are you doing with that bugle?”

“I was going to play a farewell.”

“Farewell to who?”

“Whom.”

“Huh?”

“To whom. A farewell to whom.”

“That’s what I’m asking.”

“Okay, never mind. I don’t have time for a ‘Who’s on first’ thing with you.”

“What are you talking about? Let’s get back to the farewell.”

“See that guy in the prison clothes over there.”

“You mean the dayglo orange, so no one will miss seeing me, clothes?

“Whatever. See the guy?”

“Yes. Who could miss the guy.”

“He is loading Wanda for her last ride.”

“Wanda?”

“Yeah. Wanda Wagon. She’s gone over that mechanics bridge to the great junkyard in the sky.”

“Please. You are getting all maudlin over that pile of junk?”

“Pile of junk? That car has been through thick and thin with me.”

“Thick and thin?  How do you figure? You bought her used last year.”

“Well, it’s been a tough year.”

“Don’t you think you are getting carried away?”

“Says the guy who sobbed at his Vespa’s departure.”

“That’s different. I had that scooter since I was eighteen.”

“Is that a tear I see?”

“I still miss her.”

“Didn’t you get a Harley?”

“Well, yeah. It’s just not the same.”

“I’ll say. Chrome headlights, fabulous saddlebags, terrific seat, wheels that would make you cry.”

“Yeah, she is sweet. You getting another wagon?”

“Do you have no sensitivity at all. It is too soon to talk of another wagon.”

“Coup, huh?”

“I’m in mourning.”

“Maybe red with a turbo V8?”

“I like blue better.”

“Ah, midnight blue. Maybe a convertible? The dealer is down the street.”

“Might do me good.”

“What about the bugle?”

“You are right. It was only a used car, after all.”

“You sure we were talking about cars?”

The Treasure by John W. Howell © 2019

“Are you sure no one’s home?”

“At ease, matey. I watched them leave. This time of day, they won’t be back for hours. Now just look at the treasure, will ya?”

“This stuff makes the copper monkey look cheap.”

“That’s right. All we have to do is load this stuff up, and we have made hundreds.”

“Let me drop this drape over here.”

“Good idea.”

“OMG, look at all the nautical stuff on it.”

“This guy must have been a sea captain. Look that these fishing nets too.”

“How do you use em?”

“Well, this one is for hauling in a big fish that you have on the line. It pretty much makes sure the hook doesn’t come out with the weight of the fish.”

“What about this one.”

“I think it is a landing net as well but can be used to scoop fish out of the water.”

“Okay, enough net lessons, let’s get to the copper.”

“Whoa, this desk is heavy.”

“This globe and sailboat are light. I’ll take them out.”

“Wait a minute. Help me with the desk.”

“Take out the drawers, and it will be easier.”

“Well, what are we going to do then?”
“I guess the two of us need to lift it.”
“Not going to happen. I have a bad back.”
“Bad back. Since when?”
“Two minutes ago. Let’s leave it. I say these nets the globe, clock, and sailboat are more than enough.”
“Enough for what?”
“Start our own fishing company.”
“I can’t believe you, and I are partners.”
“I know, right? I’m so brilliant, and you? Well, you are you.”
“Maybe we should think about a boat.”
“There’s a nice one down the street. Let’s go.”
“After you, Einstein.”
“Get that shade will ya.”

Flight of the Albuquerque by John W. Howell © 2019

“So, where are we going?”

“Hard to say.”

“Doesn’t that concern you?”

“Why should it?”

“We are flying behind a bunch of geese bound for who knows where and you are not concerned?”

“Gaggle.”

“Huh?”

“Gaggle of geese.”

“Oh, excuse me. The point is we are following them to heaven knows where.”

“We have more than enough fuel, and the winter snows are at least 500 miles off. So what is there to worry about?”

“The sun is beginning to set, and it will be dark soon.”

“We have running lights.”

“But can these geese see in the dark?”

“No.”

“What the heck?”

“We will land before it is totally dark and spend the night in a nice pasture near some water.”

“How do you know this?”

“I’ve done it before.”

‘You have?”

“Yup.”

“How long are we going to follow these guys?”

“Till we get to Miami Beach.”

“Wait. I didn’t tell anyone I would be gone that long.”

“You can call them when we land.”

“But I have work and responsibilities. I just thought we would be up here for an hour or so.”

“Didn’t I say we were going to fly south with the geese?”

“Yeah, but I didn’t think a thousand miles south.”

“At least we aren’t going to South America. Besides, you’ll love Miami Beach. Plenty of grass and water.”

“Grass and water? You’re kidding, right?”

“I wouldn’t kid about grass and water.”

“You are leading me to believe you think you are a goose.”

“Gander.”

“Er….what?”

“HONK.”

Look Into My Eyes by John W. Howell © 2019

“You are growing very sleepy.”

“Huh?”

“Look into my eyes and concentrate.”

“What are you trying to do?”

“Hypnotize you, of course.”

“Well, that’s not going to happen. I read where you have to be a willing subject to be hypnotized.”

“Not willing necessarily. Just dumb enough to fall for it.”

“Well, you will never get me to fall for it after that statement.”

“Wanna bet?”

“No, I don’t. Bt the way what happened to your owner. He looks knocked out.”

“Oh, nothing. I just put a spell on him. He’s in a deep trance. I will wake him up in time for dinner, though.”

“You are really delusional. He’s just taking a nap.”

“Yeah, watch this. When I say so, you will cluck like a chicken. Cluck.”

“I’m waiting.”

“Maybe he didn’t hear me. CLUCK.”

“Still nothing. I think you would do well to let him nap.”

“So, look into my eyes.”

“Yes, master.”

“You are very sleepy.”

“Very sleepy, master.”

“When I say so, you will moo like a cow. Okay, Percy. Moo like a cow.”

“Moo.”

“Now, when I say so, you will wake up and remember nothing. Wake up.”

“Wow, where was I?”

“Under my spell.”

“You sure?”

“I had you moo like a cow.”

“Well, that doesn’t prove anything. I am a cow. besides, I was messing with you. Oh, look, your boss is waking up.”

“TREVOR. WHAT IS THIS COW DOING IN THE LIVING ROOM?”

“I’m leaving Trevor. Good luck with the explanation.”

What was that? by John W. Howell © 2019

“What was that?”

“What?”

“That noise.”

I didn’t hear anything.”

“You’ve got to be kidding me. Sounded like a bomb went off.”

“There are no bombs around here.”

“Okay, maybe not a bomb but an explosion at the very least.”

“Okay, I’ll get up and investigate. Turn on the light will ya?”

“There. Watch those stairs.”

“I’m going to look out the bathroom window. I’m not going downstairs.”

“What do you see?”

“Looks like the neighbors behind us are having a barbeque.”

“What do you mean? Its five o’clock in the morning. Come back in here.”

“I’m just saying they have the whole sky lit up with their fire.”

“Let me have a look. I’ll be right back.”

“You’ll see.”

“Goodness. I think they have the whole neighborhood on fire.”

“Must be expecting a pretty big turnout.”

“We have to do something.”

“Like what?”

“Call the police or fire department.”

“I think you are right. Serves em right for not inviting us to the party. I wonder what they were going to serve. Brisket I’m guessing.”

“The fire department is on its way.”

“I’ll bet they would have had sweet corn too.”

“Will you please stop.”

“And ice-cold beer.”

“I don’t think it was a party.”

“You are just saying that since we weren’t invited.”

“Alphie come look.”

“What is is m’ love?”

“The rubbish bid has been tipped again.”

“Ack those boys.”

“Yes, and you need to set it right.”

“Me? Why not just let the rubbish blokes take care of it?”

“You know full well those blighters won’t lift a finger to right the thing. They’ll just pass by.”

“Okay but I’m getting distraught with this goings-on.”

“I know, dear, but what can we do?”

“Post a camera out by the bin and catch the little maggots who are doing this mischief.”

“Good idea. Let’s see. A camera and line feed couldn’t be more than two hundred pounds—”

“I get it, Bertie. For two-hundred pounds I can make many trips to the bin.”

“There we are, my smart man. Now pop off and set the bin right and I’ll put the water on for a lovely cuppa.”

“Ah, the shortest distance to getting what you want done, is through a tea strainer.”

“And a wee scone.”

“Be still my beating heart.”

“Now go on with ya and wear your scarf. It looks like a bit of chill in the air.”

My Ride by John W. Howell © 2019

“So where are you?”

“I’m standing under the stop sign.”

“Which stop sign?”

“Um let me see.

“The one at the Citroën dealer.”

“The Citroën dealer? Why there?”

“When you ordered your Uber you said you were at the car dealer.”

“That is true. I guess I forgot to mention which dealer.”

“Excuse me? You said, car dealer. That’s all you needed to say.”

“Okay but I still don’t see you.”

“Where are you?”

“At the Ford dealer.”

“Mon Dieu.”

“Mon Dieu? Why Mon Dieu?”

“You must be an American.”

“How do you know.”

“A car is a Citroën. You should have said you were at the Ford dealer.”

“You are French right?”

“Zut Alors. Of course, I’m French. You are in France in case you have misplaced your mind.”

“I guess I should call for another ride.”

“You can do that, but there is a small problem.”

“Which is?”

“I’m the only Uber driver this side of Auzances.”

“But I’m in Auzances.”

“Well, then good luck to you.”

“You don’t serve Auzances?”

“Non.” You will be pleased to know an American drives in Auzances.”

“Well, goodbye then.”

“Bon chance. You will need it.”

“Why’s that?”

“He drives a Citroën.”

The Cab by John W. Howell © 2019

“I’m telling you Leroy, they’ll never make it.”

“Who’ll never make it?”

“That group in the wagon up there.”

“Why do you say that?”

“For all the years I have been a door man here at this hotel, I’ve never seen such a pack of greenhorns.”

“Greenhorns you say? How so?”

“Look at ’em. Top hats, black clothes. They just don’t look the part. Look more like undertakers.”

“What are you talking about. Every hansom cab driver I’ve see looks just like that group.”

“Yeah but the hansom drivers have a cab not some buckboard.”

“You have a point there. Where’d they get that rig anyway?”

“I hooked them up with the livery guy.”

“You hooked them up? You let the livery guy sell them that piece of junk?”

“They told him they didn’t have much to spend. That is the best they could do.”

“Did you tell them that that outfit would not do?”

“No.”

“No. Why not?”

“Two reasons.”

“Okay let’s hear them.”

“First I didn’t want to discourage them for trying to make a living as cab drivers.”

“Yeah I can see that. What’s the second reason?”

“I would lose my ten percent comission.”

“Do you go to church?”

“No. Should I?”

“You might consider it.”

The Big Sleep by John W. Howell © 2019

“Harold.”

“Huh, what?”

“I hear a noise.”

“Come on, Blanch. You know I have to get up early and go chase those stupid chickens.”

“I’m serious. There is someone in the house.”

“Every time you do this. I get up and go searching, and it is always the same.”

“This time, it will be different. I thought I heard something in the other room.”

“I’m wide awake now, and I don’t hear anything.”

“Just a minute, and you will.”

“Still nothing.”

“If it is someone, what would you have me do?”

“Open that maw of yours and bite them on the butt.”

“What and then bring them to bed?”

“Oh, Harold. Just once I wish you could see my side of things.”

“Like your active imagination—Whoa, what was that?”

“See I told you. It is a burglar I’m sure of it.”

“Okay, Blanch. You stay here, and I’ll go investigate.”

“My hero. be careful.”

“I can’t hear you, Blanch, I’m almost out the door.”

“BAD DOG.”

“Yikes, I’m back, Blanch.”

“OMG, Harold, what happened?”

“There was someone in the other room, all right.”

“Why did he yell ‘bad dog?”‘

“Cause I bit him on the butt like you said to do.”

“So?”

“So? It was the owner, that’s so.”

“He didn’t respect your watchdog efforts.”

“Yeah about as much as the chicken chasing efforts. Let’s try to get some sleep.”

“Harold?”

“What?”

“You’re the best.”

“Aw. Thank you, Blanch.”

They Will Come by John W. Howell © 2019

“Hey, you there. You by the gate.”

“Yes? What is it?”

“What do you mean what is it? That’s my gate, and you are messing with it.”

“Not messing sir. Fixing.”

“It doesn’t need fixing.”

“Oh, it most certainly does, sir.”

“How so?”

“Well first of all the gate sections are not level.”

“Yeah so? It looked fine.”

“Not if we are expecting guests, sir.”

“Guests? I’m not expecting guests.”

“Yes, sir. Second of all these hinges are almost frozen with rust.”

“Who cares?”

“Your guests will care if they can’t come through these gates.”

“You keep talking about guests. I told you I don’t have guests here.”

“That is about to change sir.”

“What do you mean?”

“Your farm has been declared the country White House.”

“Huh. Never heard of such a thing.”

“Well, we have the White House and Camp David. We now need a residence that recognizes the country folk constituents.”

“You are in marketing, aren’t you?”

“How’d you know?”

“No one else could come up with a hairbrained scheme like that. What makes you think I’m going to go for this charade?”

“Ten million.”

“What?”

“Ten million cash for you to get out today.”

“Excuse me while I get my hat. By the way. You create it, and they will come. This is a really, really terrific idea.”

“Oh, I know. Been doing this for a long time. Where do you want your money deposited?”

“Wells Fargo in West Palm Beach. Got a little place down there.”

“Love your hair, sir.”

“Thanks. On sale at Costco.”
