The Wonder by John W. Howell © 2021

“Should we bother him?”

“I’m not sure. Looks like his mind is a million miles away.”

“That’s what I thought. If we try to get his attention he might have a heart attack.”

“We will have to interrupt his reverie sooner of later.”

“Why? We can just go somewhere else.”

“I don’t think that’s a great idea. I don’t know where else to go.”

“We could keep driving until we see someone dressed like him.”

“That could be a hundred miles. We need to be home by lunchtime.”

“Why’s that?”

“The guy from the Audubon society is going to meet us there remember?”

“Oh yeah. You are making a big donation.”

“Well, birds are our our friends.”

“What about this one?”

“I think it belongs to that guy.”

“How do you know?”

“He’s got hawk protection for his hands. Look at the symbol on his jacket. It screams hawk.”

“I must say he even looks like a hawk. Okay let’s go tell him his bird is with us.”

“Don’t tell him about the pupachino at Starbucks. Not sure he would like the fact we got one for his bird.”

“I think it would be wise not to mention the blueberry scone either.”

“I think you’re right.”

“What should we say when he asks how we came to have his hawk?”

“I’d go with the bird was hitchhiking and we picked it up.”

“He’s not going to believe that.”

“Maybe the truth then?”

” When you called to it and it flew in the house sounds like a fairy tale.”

“That’s why I like the hitchhike story. Any way it doesn’t matter we will get the hawk back to it’s rightful owner.”

“We hope.”

“Look at the hawk. It’s shaking it’s head.”

“I think he wants to stay with us.”

“He’s nodding.”

“One question.”

“Yeah?”

“Where did this bird learn English?”

“Let’s ask him when we get home.”

“I wonder if he’s potty trained.”

“He’s nodding yes.”

“Does Polly want a cracker?”

“He’s not a parriot.”

“I still think he wants a cracker.”

“And ruin his lunch? No way.”

The Dark by John W. Howell © 2021

“So here’s the plan. We are going to try and get the tree shot before it gets fully dark.”

“I don’t understand what’s so important about the tree shot.”

“It’s not your job to wonder about anything important. You are the talent. I’m the director.”

“Well, okay. Put that way, I’ll just be quiet.”

“A welcome change of pace. Now I need you to get under the tree.”

“Ew. Things are hanging in the tree.”

“Those are the vampire bats that are going to bite you on the neck in the scene.”

“Wait a minute. SAG rules are no biting.”

“For heaven’s sake. Have you read the script?”

“No. I saw I have no dialogue, so I just skipped it. Besides, you always tell me what I’m supposed to do.”

“Too bad you don’t listen. So here’s the scene. You have run away from the pack of zombies—”

“No way.”

“No way what?”

“I don’t run. It’s in my contract.”

“I know we have a stunt double.”

“So why say I run?”

“Let me rephrase that. In the form of a stunt double, your character runs away from a pack of zombies and comes to this tree. She is all out of breath—”

“Who is out of breath?”

“The character.”

“Go on.”

“She looks up into the tree and then sees the vampires. She falls to the ground screaming, and then we cut. Any questions?”

“I don’t fall. It’s in my contract.”

“We will cut in the stunt double falling. The shot will have you screaming and then a closeup of you on the ground.”

“It’s wet.”

“What?”

“The ground.”

“Let me guess. You don’t get wet. It’s in your contract.”

“Yup.”

“Okay then. Well, put a cover on the ground and make it look like dirt. Then, you’ll be completely dry.”

“What’s the cover made of?”

“I’m not sure.”

“Can’t be latex. I’m allergic.”

“Okay, we’ll use a cotton cloth.”

“Sustainable, organic cotton.”

“It’s in your contract fight?”

“Right.”

“You know if you weren’t my daughter, I would fire you.”

“Oh, come on, Daddy, don’t be a grumpy grump.”

“And if this weren’t your drama class project worth a semester’s grade, I would fire me.”

“You going to keep grumping, or are we going to do this?”

The Sign by John W. Howell © 2021

“Okay, I see them. What is this?”

“You won’t believe it.”

“Try me.”

“It’s a photo of two full moons.”

“I get that.  Why the photo of two full moons.”

“Well, it is actually a photo on one moon but taken at different times.”

“You want me to say they are lovely? Okay, they are lovely.”

“No, that’s not what I want you to say. I want you to look closely at the two moons. I took the photos so you could compare.”

“Very well. One is a little lighter, and I notice it has rotated so that the impressions are in a different place in relation to the axis.”

“Very good. Anything else?”

“Well, there is some kind of hairy thing on the lighter moon.”

“Exactly. What do you think it is?”

“I have no idea. Do you?”

“It’s a signal.”

“A signal? What kind of signal.”

“It says 73 Question mark. Look right here in the manual is the answer.”

“I can’t look over there. What does it say in the manual?”

Okay, I’ll quote. “When the sign 73 question mark is shown, rose leaves are ready to eat.”

“You’re kidding. Rose leaves are ready to eat. That’s great news.”

“I know, right. You want to see for yourself.”

“Put that damn manual away, and let’s get to the roses. But, wait, how far are they?”

“Pretty big treck. Across the wide green space and then over the mulch barrier to the bush.”

“How long will it take?”

“If we start now and go straight through, we can be there by tomorrow night. I would suggest we travel at night, though.”

“How long will that take?”

“It will be two days.”

“Do we have that kind of time, and why by night?”

“Yes, the 73 season is at least two weeks long. We need to travel by night cause that confounded Robin is still patrolling the yard. He sleeps at night.”

“Well, okay then. Let’s wait until nightfall.”

“Since we are green, we don’t have to worry about being spotted in the day.”

“Good point. It is so nice being a caterpillar.”

“Till the pupa stage.”

“Let’s not talk about that now. Let’s revel in the 73 question mark season while we can.”

Changes by John W. Howell © 2021

“So, mum. What do you call this?”

“I think it is more important to know what you call it.”

“Why is that?”

“This is going to be your new doghouse.”

“New doghouse? I don’t have an old doghouse. So what’s going on?”

“Dad and I feel you should have your own space. You are old enough to take that step.”

“Wait a minute. What’s wrong with me being in the house.”

“Oh, nothing, and you are welcome to come in anytime.”

“But?”

“But we feel its time for a young dog like yourself to have the freedom of your own place. You know, so you can invite your friends over, entertain guests, and that sort of thing.”

“You trying to get rid of me?”

“No, of course not. It’s just now that you are older it doesn’t seem right that you continue to sleep in our bed.”

“I get it.  Threes a crowd.”

“Well,  something like that. Now tell me, what kind of rugs would you like in there?”

“Rugs? What about heat and A/C? This thing looks like it might be blistering in the summer and freezing in the winter.”

“Come on, Trevor. Aren’t we a little dramatic? This will keep you nice and cool. Look at the huge screens. In the winter, the flaps come down to keep you cozy.”

“Your mind is made up?”

“Yes, it is.”

“I’m writing a letter to an American congressperson and voice my complaint.”

“But you’re not a citizen.”

“All the better. Non-citizens seem to be heard more over there.”

“Let me know if you need help.”

“Can I borrow your computer?”

“Sure.”

“Could you do the typing?”

“Absolutely.”

“Help me with the phrasing.”

“Of course.”

“Let me know when you are finished, and I’ll proof it.”

The Game by John W. Howell © 2021

“I can’t see any signs of injury.”

“That is amazing. You should have seen how these two came together.”

“Tell me what happened.”

“That big lug and Gerry went up for the coconut at the same time.”

“Yeah, and when their heads connected, the lug went down.”

“That’s him laying there.”

“Has anyone taken a look at him?”

“We all looked at him.”

“I mean, has anyone checked him out?”

“I did.”

“And what did you find.”

“He’s unconscious.”

“No kidding. Is he breathing?”

“He was a minute ago.”

“Okay, I’ll have a look.”

“I have to say, Gerry must have the hardest head in the country.”

“So, doc, how’s the lug?”

“He’ll be fine. I put some ice on his lump. Let me look at Gerry again. My goodness, not even a scratch.”

“Gerry says it’s all those bananas.”

“I’m sure. It could also be that he is not a purebred monkey. I suspect somewhere along the line, his ancestors got mixed up with some humans.”

“Really, doc?”

“Yes. I would d like to do some DNA research, but I already have an opinion.”

“Do tell. Who do you think is part of his DNA?”

“With that hard head, I would guess a writer of some kind. Probably self-published.”

“Poor Gerry.”

Creepy photo of a town

Home. By John W. Howell © 2021

“We finally made it.”

“What did we make.”

“I mean, we have finally arrived at our new hometown.”

“Looks kinda creepy.”

“Nonsense. The view from this hill is the best. It looks like the castle is all lit up, just waiting for us. All we have to do is go down the hillside, cross that main street, and go up to the castle.”

“I think easier said than done.”

“Oh, come on. We’ve come all this way. We are almost there.”

“Do you realize how far away the castle is from here?”

“Can’t be more than a couple of miles.”

“Listen to yourself. A couple of miles? That is like halfway around the world.”

“We’ve gone farther.”

“Yeah, but we had something to ride. We are on foot now. Tell me again why we had to leave the other place.”

“You know as well as I do that it became unsafe.”

“Oh, come on. You read those organic articles and think there a deadly threat on everything.”

“Did you try to walk across the kitchen floor?”

“Well, no. You scared me with your belief.”

“Belief? Didn’t you see the white line on the floor?”

“I saw what you told me to see. I can’t be certain now.”

“Let me tell you. That place was infested with poison.”

“Where’s the proof?”

“Didn’t you see the human in green toting that spray canister?”

“The one with O-R-K-I-N on his shirt?”

“He did look pretty out of place. Who names their kid Orkin?”

“That is a company name which means death to us.”

“One thing, I can’t figure out.”

“What?”

“Why do humans go nuts when they hear our species name?”

“Our name must mean something frightening in their language.”

“Roach is the nicest name possible.”

“To you and I.”

“This castle?”

“Yeah?”

“How safe is it.”

“They never heard of Raid.”

Gossip by John W. Howell © 2021

“Would you look at that?”

“What?”

“That Heffer Louise.”

“Yeah, she looks like she has put on a few pounds.”

“She has a lot of nerve showing up here.”

“Oh, do tell.”

“You mean you don’t know?”

“I’m the last to know everything. Come on, spill the beans.”

“Okay, but you didn’t hear this from me. Promise?”

“Hoofie swear.”

“Ernestine started going out with that gorgeous Brahma Bull.”

“I think I heard that part.”

“Then all of a sudden ole Louise starts strutting her stuff.”

“Men are such fools. What happened next.”

“I think you guessed it. The Brahma makes a play for Louise and drops Ernestine.”

“That hussy.”

“I hear tell Ernestine had a calf.”

“No, really?”

“Well, we think it was put up for adoption cause no one’s seen it. That’s not the best part, though.”

“It’s pretty good, though.”

“Get this. The Brahma wants to get hitched to Louise, and she drops him like a hot potato.”

“Whaaaatttttt?”

“I know, right? Now both Brahma and Ernestine and miserable all because of Louise. Shush, here she comes.”

“Morning, ladies.”

“Oh, good morning Louise. My, you look radiant today.”

“Why, thank you. You two were in such a focused discussion I thought you might have some gossip to share.”

“Oh, no. We were just talking about the weather. How about you?”

“The same. Well, I think I’ll go over to the hay buffet and see if anything is interesting. Have a nice day.”

“You too, Louise. Bye.”

“She has lots of nerve.”

“I’ll say. In addition to nerve, she should also take a pass on the buffet.”

Are You Sure? by John W. Howell © 2021

“Control. Wolfman.”

“Go ahead, Wolfman.”

“We are circling the target now.”

“You are clear to execute.”

“Roger that control. I have a question.”

“A question, Wolfman?”

“Roger control.”

“Go ahead.”

“You guys sure about this?”

“What do you mean.”

“This doesn’t look like a terrorist camp.”

“Let’s check coordinates. We have you at 225 West Delta sector.”

“Affirmative control. My DME is the same.”

“So, what’s the problem?”

“The visual on the target looks very much like a convent.”

“A convent?”

“Affermative.”

“Impossible.”

“Any unfriendly fire?”

“Negative. Also, no visible ground to air emplacements.”

“Intel says the place is thick with anti-aircraft installations.”

“That’s what I was told at the briefing.”

“Your call. Wolfman.”

“Roger that control. Wingman and I will make one more pass over the target, but I’m of a mind to return to base.”

“Roger Wolfman. Your discretion. Control standing by.”

“Coyote?”

“Yeah, Wolfman.”

“You see anything.”

“Negative.”

“We are going to do one more pass, and my guess is someone screwed up on the intel.”

“Right with you, Wolfman.”

“Let’s do a 180 on my mark. Three, two, one. Execute. Control, Wolfman.”

“Go, Wolfman.”

“Wingman and I are turning a 180 to observe. We’ll report what we see.”

“Roger that, Wolfman. Control standing by.”

“Roger Cont—”

“You broke up there, Wolfman. . . Wolfman? Control over. Wolfman?  Coyote. Do you read? Wolfman, Coyote, Wolfman, do you read. Control calling. Please come in.”

The Walk by John W. Howell © 2021

“Why did you let them go through?”

“They didn’t look like someone I wanted to know.”

“That has nothing to do with it. We are running a business.”

“Yes, but the business has to have a heart.”

“You let too many go through, and we’ll be out of business, let me tell you.”

“Ah, it was only two. More will come along.”

“What made you decide to et them through?”

“Like I said, they didn’t look like people I wanted to know.”

“What’s to know? You just collect the money, and then they are on their way.”

“I like to have a little discussion with ’em.”

“Discussion? I can’t imagine what you have to discuss.”

“Okay, you pretend to be one of them, and I’ll show you.”

“Fine. Seems stupid, but I’ll do it.”

“Okay, ready. You are at the entrance to the walkway.”

“Got it.”

“And I’m in my regular spot.”

“Yes, yes. Come on, show me.”

“My first line is friendly. Ahem. Here it is.”

“For heaven’s sake, get on with it.”

“WHO DARES APPROACH THE WALK OF THE TROLLS.”

“Sounds okay so far.”

“Thanks. Next, I do a variation on the Fe Fi Fo Fum bit.”

Let’s hear it.”

“Okay. ‘FE, FI, FO, FUM. WHERE ON EARTH ARE YOU GIRLS FROM.'”

“Now, wait a minute. You are supposed to say something like ‘I smell the blood of an Englishman'”

“But these are girls, and they are Americans. See what I mean? It becomes difficult.”

“Just tell them they need to give the troll a toll.”

“Some giggle.”

“What?”

“Yeah, right to my face.”

“Do you have your scowling face on?”

“Yup, and they laugh.”

“Maybe we need a new approach.”

“Like what.”

“Um, let me think. Okay, I got it.”

“This should be great.”

“FE FI FO FUM. PAY THE TOLL, OR I’LL TELL YOUR MUM.”

“I’m sure they’ll be shivering by then.”

“You have something better?

“Well. How about FE, FI, FO, FUM. PAY THE TOLL, OR I’LL SPANK YOUR BUM.”

“For heaven’s sake. We are trolls, not perverts. Kill that one.”

“How about just simply putting up a sign that. says Troll toll. Pay what you want.”

“What about those who refuse to pay?”

“Yeah, good catch.  How’s this, Troll toll. Pay what you want or be eaten.”

“Nice ring to it.”

“So, in reality, the ones you let through didn’t look good enough to eat?”

“Bingo. They looked all tough and stringy.”

“Oh, I hate that.”

“Me too.”

Two dogs running

Grand Prix Doggie by John W. Howell © 2021

“Okay, so when you come to a curve, just lean into it.”

“I get it. Your feet stay firmly on the track.”

“I think you might do a little better also if you could change your lead just before hitting the curve.”

“What do you mean?”

“You are in a right over left lead configuration.”

“Is that bad?”

“No, not bad but notice how my body seems to follow the curve. I’m in left over right lead, and it just fits better.”

“You do look more streamlined. I can feel my ears bouncing around.”

“So do a lead change, and you will smooth out.”

“Wow. That is wonderful.”

“Okay, then coming out of the curve, you can change the lead again if it feels better.”

“No, this is pretty comfortable.”

“Well, I think you are ready.”

“You mean it?”

“Yup. I think I have taught you everything I know.”

“So you think I have a chance?”

“They are some pretty fast dogs.”

“Yeah, but I have the heart.”

“Okay, heart does go a long way. What made you want to race in the first place?”

“I always loved how those dogs looked going around the track. Sleek and beautiful. I want to look like that.”

“You know looks aren’t everything.”

“Yeah, but you have to admit they are beautiful.”

“They are greyhounds, and you are a Russel terrier. You know that, right?”

“So, what does that have to do with anything?”

“If you don’t see the difference, then don’t let me dissuade you.”

“You have to follow your dream no matter how hopeless it may be.”

“Okay, then. Good luck tomorrow.”

“I’m a fine-tuned running machine. But thank you for the good wishes.”
