Views of the Neighborhood

Since this is spring break time, I had hopes of catching some excellent photos of American youth out of control. You know the ones where no one can focus their eyes, duckfaces, tongues out, red Solo cups, cigarettes, no shirts, and no shoes.

For a little nostalgia here is a shot from last year. (yes, there is a guy in the photo )

Spring Break

Since I take the photos for this feature on Saturday, I’m sad that at press time because of record-breaking rain, the posted photos show a different scene. (Don’t get me wrong. I’m not sad there is no mayhem, I’m sad we have nothing to laugh over)

So, let’s take a look at some friends of mine. I have to warn you these guys are not wearing any clothes.

Spring break

Yup this is a flock of Pelicans flying over a dark and stormy beach. This is a look to the North, and you can see some blue barrels on the beach. These are designed to keep the thousands of college kids from parking by the dune and blocking the road. They are put up for spring break then taken down. Usually, there are hundreds of vehicles going back and forth. The next photo shows a vehicle in the area.

Spring break

You have to admit it is a pretty dismal sight. I can’t imagine sleeping in that soggy tent.

This next shot shows an alternative to the soaked tent.

Spring break

Not sure this is any less dismal.

This last shot is of the beach chair set up by the resort down the road. I think they are ready for what will be no-shows.

Spring break

In case you wonder, we are most happy when the weather does not co-operate. We have become used to the peace and quiet of no spring break, and when it is upon us, all we can do is hunker down. This year it appears we have had a break of our own. Besides, the lawn needed a drink.

The weather is supposed to clear by Monday (darn it) so I’m sure there is plenty of noise, trash, and drunk time left in the week. I’ll be hanging out inside.

Stream of Consciousness Saturday – Prompt “Short”

SOCS

It is Stream of Consciousness Saturday and this week out prompt is “short.” If you would like to join in the prompts you can. You can do it without reading anything at Linda Hill’s site. Just write anything that comes to mind around the word short and the link it to Linda’s place. Oh and no fair correcting typos and stuff like that. Here is the link (you may want to read the other rules like cooking a dozen cookies for each promptee.) https://lindaghill.com/2017/03/10/the-friday-reminder-and-prompt-for-socs-mar-1117/

Short by John W. Howell © 2017

“I’m not sure I like the word.”

“What word?”

“Short.”

“Now this is a twist. Why aren’t you sure you like the word?”

“I dunno. It just sounds a little inadequate to me.”

“Inadequate? How does short sound inadequate? What is wrong with you?”

“Um, you know.”

No. I don’t know.”

“Well um. Let’s say something you have is described as short.”

“Like what?”

“Er let’s say your arm is described as short.”

“Is your arm short?”

“That’s not the issue. No, it’s not but let’s say someone described it as short.”

“I’d love to know where this is going. Okay, let’s say someone described your arm as short. So what?”

“Wouldn’t you say the arm is inadequate?”

“Not necessarily.”

“Let’s say you needed to reach across the table with a short arm. Wouldn’t that mean the arm is inadequate?”

“Okay, so you now have defined a situation where the arm is inadequate.”

“Ah ha.”

“Ah ha, what?”

See what I mean about the word short.”

“Okay, so who called whatever you have short?”

“She called it short.”

“She? Who is she?”

“My girlfriend.”

Called what short?”

“I don’t want to say.”

“What is wrong with you? Why can’t you say?”

“It’s embarrassing.”

“She described something you have as short, and you’re embarrassed to tell me?”

“I don’t want people to laugh at me.”

“No one’s going to laugh. Tell me.”

“She said my uh attention span is short.”

“Mooohahahahahahaha. Wait. Did you say attention span?”

Friday JohnKu – AKA – TGIF

TGIF

It has been a fast week. It seems that way to me although I can’t really explain why. Maybe it’s all the extra projects that I have been working on. (Not writing projects) Our painter is supposed to show up to do the outside of the house, so I have been getting the nails and screws covered with a protective paint. Although the painters say, they have stuff that will do the job, looking at my neighbors still, leads me to my tried and true method. I have one neighbor whose house was painted last year, and the nails are already rusting through. I buy a special product, and it has to be put on by hand. The only spots I can’t reach are on the chimney and peak of the roof. I will let the painter handle those. I have also been doing some general repairs which are a constant here near the Gulf. Finally, I wrapped up the taxes. (Yes, I do my own. I figure my MBA has got to be good for something) Today’s JohnKu talks about projects. I hope you enjoy your weekend

Wednesday Story Day – AKA Hump Day

Hump Day

It is Wednesday Story Day time again, and last week we left Lucas and Seth discussing the relationship between Seth and his son who happens to be a child of Alice’s. (Whew) The Sheriff (Seth) mentioned to Lucas that their family was complicated. It is beginning to look like that could be an understatement. Let’s go back to the widow Murphy’s house and see if Seth and Lucas have any final shocker for us.

“So why did you and Alice get divorced?”
“Well, you see, son. We never did get divorced.”
“What? You are still married.”
“Only under the laws of the state. She and I have not had what you cal a marital relationship for years.”
“Why no divorce.”
“Hmm. Not sure, son. I think it may have something to do with never the right time or place.”
“You don’t live together?”
“Naw. I moved out a long time ago.You know, son when you ask these questions it makes me wonder why we never did get a divorce.”
“You religious?”
“Can’t say either of us took that excuse highway. Naw we are sinners like the rest of the world.”
“I’m studying the law, and I can tell you divorces are expensive.”
“That’s not it either. Alice told me she wants nothing. So far she’s taken nothing.”
“Well, I guess it’s none of my business but seems a little odd. How many years have you been separated?”
“I think you are right. It is none of your business. I’m going to mosey now. I think you’d better start on that house or the widow is going to get a little perturbed with you.”
“Yeah, you’re right sheriff. Hey, it was nice talking to you.”
“You know, son. As much as I hate to say so, it was nice talking to you as well. By the way, is the widow home?”
“Nope, she is off having her hair done.”
“Hair done? Now that’s a good one.”
“W-what do you mean?”
“Widow Murphy would no more let anyone do her hair than she would sit in a fire.”
“Well, maybe I misheard her then.”
“Yeah, I think so. Well, tell her hey, when she comes home.”
“I will sheriff. I will for sure.”
“Bye Lucas.”

Tuesday – Anything Possible – Kreative Kue #113 by Keith Channing

I asked Keith to explain what is going on here. These are his words. “Using this photo (below) as inspiration, write a short story, flash fiction, scene, poem; anything, really; and either put it (or a link to it) in a comment or email it to me at keithkreates@channing.fr before 6pm next Sunday (if you aren’t sure what the time is where I live, this link will tell you). If you post it on your own blog or site, a link to this page would be appreciated, but please do also mention it in a comment here – pingbacks don’t often work.

Go on. You know you want to. Let your creativity and imagination soar. I shall display the entries, with links to your own blog or web site, next Monday.”

Kreative Kue #113

“Hey, honey.”

“What dear?”

“You know that young woman who was a singer and died?”

“What are you talking about?”

“We read that article in People magazine. You know that teenage girl who was in the car wreck.”

“Oh. That girl who was just starting her career. The one with the number one song?”

“That’s the one.”

“What about her?”

“Did she have a sister?”

“What do you care?”

“Just answer. Did she?”

“No, she was all alone. Remember she was an orphan.”

“That’s what I thought. What was she wearing when she was in the accident?”

“You are starting to concern me. The article said she had just left the stage.”

“I know that. Do you remember what she was wearing?”

“The article said she was in pink and blue.”

“Braided hair right?”

“W-well yes. In the PR photo, she had braided hair.”

“Come look.”

“Okay. What am I looking at?”

“You don’t see her?”

“I see a lot of hers. Which one?”

“By the palm tree. Blue shirt, pink pants braided hair.”

“I see people in the grass. No girl.”

“You’re kidding. She’s right there.”

“Darling?”

“Yes dear.”

“How many margaritas’ have you had?”

“Too many I guess.”

“Yes, love. One too many. Let’s go sit down.”

Ten Things Not to Do When Spring Cleaning

Spring Cleaning

This list is inspired by the waiting list of to do’s that have generally been classified as “Spring Cleaning Chores.” I have been studying the list (the first step) for the last few days and was reminded of all the things I needed to think about before getting to work. To those of you who have a spouse that seemingly takes an inordinate amount of time planning the approach to such tasks, be thankful you have a cautious worker on your staff. The end result will be final completion with minimal risk. To those not so lucky your trips to the emergency room are the payoff. (This last paragraph was a PSA on behalf of all those self-cleaners out there)  I hope you enjoy the list.

Ten Things Not to Do While Spring Cleaning.

10 While spring cleaning, do not start a list without careful planning. If you do, at best you’ll only waste your time haphazardly moving from one project to the next. At worst, that last missing step on the ladder will only become important when you step on it. (It is a long way down, and your screaming just woke the baby, Buford.)

9 While spring cleaning, don’t forget to look down at the wash water before throwing it out. If you do, at best you may lose your favorite brush. At worst, your youngest may take a flight that was unplanned. (How did that kid get in there anyway, Buster?)

8 While spring cleaning, don’t forget the law of gravity. If you do, at best that hammer won’t take out the patio cover. At worst, your weightlessness feeling will only be a millisecond before you reconnect with terra firma.(Those skydiving lessons were of no help on your free fall from the roof right, Tex?)

7 While spring cleaning, do not mix several cleaning agents together. If you do, at best you’ll only waste the materials. At worst, you may inadvertently duplicate what used to be considered a military grade poison gas. (How’s that waiting list on the lung transplant coming along, Slick?)

6 While spring cleaning, do not try to remove spots with anything but approved removers. If you do, at best the spot removed will be a bigger as a result of residual cleaner. At worst, that spot lifter you used clearly said not for use on leather. (How are you going to explain that missing arm on the couch, Bunky?)

5 While spring cleaning, do not think you can use a leaf blower in the living room. If you do, at best you may be surprised at how may things go out the front door. At worst, although the knick knack shelf is clean there may be no more knick knacks. (Funny how those crystal items turned to dust, huh Ferd?)

4 While spring cleaning, do not forget to empty the vacuum cleaner during the process. If you do, at best the job will take longer. At worst, at the end of the job, your vacuum and hose may be entirely filled only to let go when you turn the machine off.   (Didn’t plan on starting over did you, Bosco?)

3 While spring cleaning, do not use that paint from five years ago. If you do, at best the color will be close, and only your mother in law will notice. At worst, what used to be bright white woodwork will look like an original “this old house” before picture.(Now you have to do it twice huh, Putz?)

2 While spring cleaning, do not think others want the radio that loud. If you do, at best you may get a phone call. At worst, you will have awoken Tiny the WWF champ who flew in from LA on the redeye and finally got to sleep. (Notice Tiny has red eyes of his own as you observe his knuckle sandwich being served a la carte, Pard.)

1 While Spring cleaning, do not underestimate the strength of your power washer. If you do, at best you may make some marks on your house. At worst, you’ll notice the chunks of paint being stripped from the siding a little too late to avoid a complete repaint job. (Well, that was a sound investment wasn’t it, Darling? Yes, the most feared words in the language)

Views of the Neighborhood

As most of the Christian world knows last Tuesday was Fat Tuesday which marks the last day before the beginning of Lent. In New Orleans, the event is characterized by the last of the Mardi Gras parades. Not to be outdone Port Aransas Has its own version of a Fat Tuesday Mardi Gras parade. I must tell you that I took over 100 photos of the show and can only give you a representative sample of the participating members. So here is the Mardi Gras parade Port Aransas style.

The parade started with two police cars leading the way

Port Aransas Mardi Gras

This is a photo of some typical participants.  Adult beverages were de rigor.

fullsizeoutput_4a2

The float members were pitching beads and candy to the bystanders.

fullsizeoutput_4a4

Here is a boat theme. Wonder how they got that idea? Notice the guy picking up the beads. He didn’t even have to take off his shirt.

fullsizeoutput_4a5

This is the only photo of the fifty golf carts in the parade. It is typical, and most look similar.

fullsizeoutput_4a6

Another boat. Go figure.

fullsizeoutput_4a7

This Humvee was well decorated. Lots of candy came off this baby.

fullsizeoutput_4a8

This child was very cute, so I kept it in.

fullsizeoutput_4a9

This float is actually a portable bar that visits the beach now and then

fullsizeoutput_4aa

I thought the motorized chair showed a lot of grit and so typical of the spirit of Port Aransas. A big applause was given.

fullsizeoutput_4ab

There is a Parrot Head chapter in Port Aransas. I know a big shock.

fullsizeoutput_4ac

Here is the Chamber of Commerce float and of course the guy is texting and floating. Probably ordering carry out.

fullsizeoutput_4ad

There were some cool cars in the parade like this Camaro.

fullsizeoutput_4ae

This float got the Awwwww award. Seemed strange having innocent children in a celebration of overindulgence. They were cute, though.

fullsizeoutput_4af

Here’s a red Chevy

fullsizeoutput_4b1

And a custom hot rod from Colorado

fullsizeoutput_4b2

My favorite was this vintage Pontiac. I think it is a 1949 and it is in pristine condition

fullsizeoutput_4b3

The parade ended with the EMS team.

fullsizeoutput_4b4

I hope you like the parade. It was very much fun and I collected a lot of beads and candy as well.

Stream of Consciousness Saturday – Prompt “Project”

SOCS

It is Stream of Consciousness Saturday time again. This week’s prompt is “project.” Linda Hill says we can use it any way we want. (Oh joy). If you would like to join this rag-tag outfit go to Linda’s blog and read the rules, then send each of us a six pack of very expensive beer. Here is the link.

The Friday Reminder and Prompt for #SoCS Mar. 4/17

Project by John W. Howell © 2017

“Attention class. Today we are going to discuss the semester project.”

“Excuse me, Mr. Winther.”

“Yes, Michelle. You have a question?”

“I do sir. Can we select any member of the class to be project team members?”

“Well, although that is a good idea, Michelle this project is going to be an individual project.”

“Oh. You mean we can’t get others to help?”

“You should complete the project on your own. Now class. The first thing we should decide is what each of our projects will be. We should try to avoid any duplication.”

“Mr. Winther, sir.”

“Yes, Michelle?”

“I want to have the first pick of the project I want to do.”

“And why should that be, Michelle?”

“I’m the one with the highest GPA.”

“That’s not how we are doing it. We are going to list the projects on pieces of paper and each student will get a chance to draw their project out of a hat.”

“Mr. Winther?”

“Yes, Michelle.”

“Can I go first to draw?”

“We are going by last name Michelle.”

“That means I will be last.”

“It really doesn’t matter. All the projects are good ones.”

“I hate to be last, and I just know my project will suck.”

“Now Miss Zielinski we do not use language like that in my class.”

“I’m sorry, sir. I got carried away.”

“That is okay. If there are no more questions everyone, please pick a project.”

“I just knew it. My project sucks.”

“Miss Zielinski, please. What is your project?”

” To solve world hunger.”

“Now that is a very nice project, Michelle and If you do it properly, you will have your wings in no time. Let’s not hear any more complaining.”

Friday – AKA TGIF

TGIF

Maybe it’s me but this week seemed to crawl by. I can’t put my finger on the reason, it just felt like a long week. Well, be that as it may, it is almost over for the work part. I was glad to get My GRL launched and am so grateful for all the support this week.

Now have to turn my attention to whipping Circumstances of Childhood into shape. I heard from my beta readers, and there are a few refinements that are needed. I can’t imagine publishing a book without giving it to folks to read. They always spot some anomalies that never occur to the writer. I am gratified no one said it sucked, so I have the courage to continue forward.

I hope your week was well spent and that you have a glorious weekend. This week’s JohnKu talks a little about how we need each other. I hope you enjoy it.

You by John W. Howell © 2017

You are always there,

Supporting and cheering on. . .

I appreciate.
