Stream of Consciousness Saturday – Prompt – Drink

A picture of a string with drops of water- the logo for SoCS

With brain pounding and mouth drooling my coffee drink is finally ready. A sip of the life affirming elixir is interrupted by the invasive sound of Westminster chimes signalling some idiot can’t read the sign above the doorbell that reqads in large letters DO NOT RING THE DOORBELL. Twiggy and Tempeste have gone into stage two barking and a Benny bone has to be tossed into the soundproof room. Having tossed the bone and slammed to door behind the decibel bending fur sisters peace once again returns to the manor. Checking the security camera feed there is no one to be seen on the porch.  “What do you want?” is my command from the intercom. “Message from Linda Hill,” is the reply. “Just leave it.”

After some sniveling and expressed fear of losing a deliver job the security system shut down process is begun. The SWAT team needs to be put on standby. A quick text to the leader confirms that status. Also, the flight of A-10 Warthogs must be diverted. Another call to the commander puts that worry to rest. The SEAL team needs to be called off and a call to the leader makes that possible. The control panel makes the shutdown of the security system process simpler. The boiling oil vats are put on standby, the turret mortars disengaged, the Trebuchet on safety, the concertina wire rolled, the Claymore mines reset, the tower Gatling guns on safety, the moat net dropped, the alligators fed, the IEDs and shoulder-held rockets put away. The locks on the door are thrown.

Standing there is a character that looks very much like Daffy Duck. He has a note in one hand and the other looks like he is expecting a tip. Taking the note and offering as a tip to “Watch out for black holes,” the door is slammed. The security system shows the duck sticking his tongue out as he backs down the drive. I reengage the system and open the note. It reads: Your Friday prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is “drink.” Use it as a noun or a verb, use it any way you’d like. Have fun

Drink by John W. Howell © 2025

“Are you kidding me?”

“What?”

‘Did you pay Linda Hill to come up with “drink” as the prompt?”

“No it just happened.”

“Come on. Every week we sit here and talk about VooDoo Rangers and then go drink them.”

“Yeah, so?”

“Just looks a little too convenient to me.”

“Well sometimes we can catch a break. This is the day.”

“I suppose. Well ow that we have broken the ide.”

“Call Uber.”

“I have. He’s right over there.”

“That’s colorful.”

“Yes, and looks at all the room in back.”

“I wonder what they hauled in that thing?”

“You don’t want to know.”

“What does that mean?”

“Part of the deal is we would help with deliveries.”

“Deliveries of what?”

“Golden Bird dung.”

“Huh?”

“Only two stops.”

“And?”

“We have to shovel it out.”

“Not sure I’m dressed for that.”

“Don’t worry there are boots, gloves, and overalls in the truck.”

“Gas mask?”

“Um. Don’t think so. Man you are so fussy.”

“Yeah that’s me.”

Tuesday – Anything Possible – Finger Point Prompt – Shower

Today I opened Circumstances of Childhood randomly to page 229. With eyes closed I pointed to the page. My finger fell closest to the word “shower.” That is our prompt.

Shower by John W. Howell © 2025

“So what did the weatherman say?”

“We should experience a shower today.”

“It looks like more than a shower.”

“I admit the rain is falling pretty heavy.”

“It has been going on since last weekend.”

“I listened to the ten day forecast and it is supposed to continue as a shower.”

“Do you think it was a good idea to take this hike?”

“Sure why not? A little rain isn’t going to put a damper on our fun.”

“Okay I just don’t want to be too far from home.”

“Don’t worry we can get back pretty quick.”

“How far have we come?”

“I would say we are a day’s walk fro m home.”

“Not sure I want to get any further away.”

“That’s fine we can stay here for a while. You’ll see the rain is going to taper off and the sun will be out.”

“I hope so. I do recall Noah telling us not to go too far.”

“You know that old guy is nuts. He says there is going to be a flood but I don’t see any flood warnings.”

“Well all the same if the rain doesn’t slow down I think we should head back.”

“Okay That is a deal. Don’t forget we unicorns can run like the wind.”

“I know I just don’t want to get cut off by rising water. What if Noah is right?”

“Okay we can head back now. I see you are a little nervous.”

“That would make me feel a lot better.

Tuesday – Anything Possible – Finger Point Prompt – Margaritas

Today I opened My GRL to page 121 and with my eyes closed pointed to the page. My finger landed near the word margaritas. This is our prompt today.

Margaritas by John W. Howell © 2025

“You know if you drink too much of that, you might fall.”

“Yeah, but it tastes so good.”

“Me, I can’t get past the salt on the rim.”

“You have to brush it off.”

“And that lime juice can be a little sour.”

“Oh, come on. There is enough agave nectar in there to offset the lime.”

“Only if it is made right.”

“Well, I’ve been coming to this place a long time, and they make them right.”

“I like the orange hint.”

“That’s a full measure of orange liqueur talking.”

“The cocktails out on the patio aspect of this place is nice.”

“Yeah. Fresh air and margaritas. Can’t beat it. I could spend the rest of the day with this glass.”

“You know, we do have to get back to work.”

“Sadly, I suppose you’re right.”

“Oh, oh.”

“What?”

“That couple is coming over to their table.”

“Means we need to adios. You know how those women scream when they see a bee.”

“I do have a question.”

“Shoot.”

“Do you think the honey tastes like a margarita after we have had a few. sips.”

“Naw. More like orange blossom. Let’s take off before that guy swats us into oblivion.”

Stream of Consciousness Saturday – Prompt – “Walk”

A picture of a string with drops of water- the logo for SoCS

It is a long walk from the bedroom to the kitchen. Well, let’s say it seems like a long walk when the caffeine-deprived brain is screaming behind the eyeballs for immediate relief. To quiet the banshee inside my head, I choose two cups of that second export from Colombia. A finger touch is all it takes, and the steaming frothy cup is delivered post haste.

The first sip quelled the roaring neurons, and the room color went from pink to white. The realization that my burning eyes were giving the room the pink hue dawned on me just as the doorbell tripped the Westminster chimes. The quiet air was shattered with what sounded like a 747 in dire trouble, only to realize that a knuckle bone would be needed to restore the peace. Said bone was tossed into the soundproof room, followed by the Baskerville hounds and a door slam. Once the chimes finished their routine, the quiet almost made the ears hurt.

Checking the camera,  a lone Rooster image holding a sign that reads Message from Linda Hill greets the eye. “Just leave it,” is the instruction through the intercom. “Can’t,” came the reply. “It’s verbal.” “Then say it,” is the response. “Can’t. Need to verify your identity.” A big sigh while moving to disengage the security system. The SWAT team needs to be put on standby. A quick text to the leader confirms that status. Also, the flight of A-10 Warthogs must be diverted. Another call to the commander puts that worry to rest. The control panel makes the shutdown of the security system process simpler. The boiling oil vats are put on standby, the Trebuchet on safety, the concertina wire rolled, the Claymore mines reset, the tower Gattling guns disengaged, the moat net dropped, the alligators fed, the IEDs and shoulder-held rockets put away. The locks on the door are thrown.

The tall thing before me looks very much like  Fog Horn Leghorn. He goes on about needing an ID before stating the message. Showing him my driver’s license finally gets him talking. “I say. I say there, John, your Friday prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is “walk.” Use it any way you’d like. Have fun, I say.” A quick thank you and a ten-dollar tip send the rooster on his way.

Walk by John W. Howell © 2025

“Well, that was a pleasant visitor.”

“I wish they would knock. I guess none of them read.”

“But then we would miss the fun of Twiggy and Tempeste barking.”

“I suppose.”

“Why no clock again this week?”

“The only thing going on was the May 30th incident in 1925 China.”

“The what?”

“Yeah, in China, there was a riot of workers, and the British killed thirteen of them in Shanghai.”

“Not something we want to see or walk through.”

“No, but it did give rise to the Communist Party in China. After the incident, membership went from 200 to 2000; the rest is history.”

“Now we know. Any history on Voo Doo Rangers.”

“You are about as subtle as a falling Mosler safe on that segway. There will be history after we get to the pub.”

“Now you’re talking. Uber is over there.

“Wow, that’s an oldy but goodie.”

“What do you figure a 1949 Chevy Truck?”

“Hard to say. The 49 through 53 looked pretty much the same. Anyway, it will be fun to take a ride.”

“It’s free, too.”

“What’s the catch?”

“We have to go through the paint shop on the way.”

“You gotta be kidding me. That will take a week.”

“Oh no, not for painting, just to pick out the color.”

“Well, that’s better. Let’s go.

Stream of Consciousness Saturday – Prompt – “That Time”

A picture of a string with drops of water- the logo for SoCS

A ton of rain last night. The lightning was spectacular, with what could be called friendly thunder. It more or less rolled like some songwriters describe. It brought to mind that time when a heavy downpour and wind took out the tent in the backyard. A quick check confirmed that the tent was still there. The coffee machine rewarded that result with a piping hot, creamy, big cup of cappuccino. The first sip brought the head-cracking sound of the Westminster chimes resulting from some idiot pushing the doorbell with a sign over it not to do that.” Twiggy and Tempest put several scratches in the ceiling as they defy gravity to ward off the intruder that death is imminent. A knuckle bone tossed into the soundproof room saves the crystal from turning to dust. Slamming the door while making a mental note that a skull and crossbones must also be put out by the doorbell.

A glance at the camera playback shows a sign that says, “Special Delivery from Linda Hill.” Screaming through the intercom to just leave it, it is responded to by two words. “Must sign.” Cursing quietly, the security shut-down process begins.

Standing before me with the sign is the stinkiest delivery person on the planet. This person appears to look and smell very much like Pepe Le Peu. Under his arm is a cat blinking help me in Morse code with her eyelids. Pepe hands me the envelope and a clipboard. Once signed, he and the cat disappear down the road. The envelope is opened and the message is clear Your Friday prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is “that time.” Use it any way you’d like. Enjoy!

That Time by John W. Howell © 2025

“Remember that time when we had a ride in the back of an Uber truck.”

“There have been so many inconveniences to remember, I can’t recall.”

“There were cows in there and we had to share space with the,”

“I really don’t recall. Are you making that up?”

“No. I just want you to know things could be worse.”

“Worse than what?”

“Today’s Uber.”

“Oh no. You did another deal.”

“Yup. They are going to pay us for riding.”

“Oh, oh. When that happens, it means work.”

“Not this time. Look over there.”

“Nope, sorry. Not doing it this time.”

“There’s room in the front for three.”

“So why are they paying us?”

“They need new business, and they figure you and I are great influencers.”

“Where did they get that idea?”

“I told them about your two million subscribers.”

“You what?”

“Yeah. They were impressed. I also told them how you put VooDoo Ranger on the map.”

“You call them back and tell them you made a mistake.”

“How about I call them from the pub after our VooDoos?”

“That sounds fine, but we will pay the guy.”

“I’m broke.”

“What’s new. Fine, I’ll pay the guy.”

“You are a mensch, you know?”

“Another word for sucker. Let’s go.”

Stream of Consciousness Saturday – Prompt – Straw

A picture of a string with drops of water- the logo for SoCS

The Saturday choice of coffee is extensive. In order not to be too spoiled, the special coffee is reserved for the weekend. Usually, a cappuccino is the choice, but today, something else is on the mind. Let’s see. The options include flat white, latte, latte macchiato, espresso, double espresso, or plain coffee. Well, plain coffee is out since that is a week thing. Short of taking a straw vote, the Latte macchiato it is.

The button is punched, and the machine fires back a question. “Are you sure?” Hitting the confirm button puts a stop to all the foolishness. My tall latte macchiato had a layer of hot milk, a layer of espresso, and a finish with a layer of milk foam. A long sip of the delightful brew sends the mind to thinking of the clock.

It is set for May 17th, 1925. The duration is an hour, and the destination is New York City. The plunger is pulled, and we find ourselves outside the Garrick Theater on Broadway. We can see by the marquee that tonight is the opening of the Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart revue The Garrick Gaieties. This is the first show written by this team. We know, of course, that it won’t be the last.

Reading the information on the billboard, the show is directed by Philip Loeb with musical staging by Herbert Fields, the cast includes Romney Brent, June Cochrane, Sterling Holloway (Later the voice of Winnie the Pooh Libby Holman, Philip Loeb, Edith Meiser, Sanford Meisner, Betty Starbuck, and Lee Strasberg. (Director of the  Actor’s Studio and the father of the Method acting system.) The most famous song to come out of the show is Manhattan.

Just when the doors open, the alarm goes off, and back to the couch we go. There is a text from Linda Hill. I reads:

Your Friday prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is “straw.” Use it any way you’d like. Have fun!

“Why didn’t we stay for the show?”

“I messed up on the time. We got there too early.”

“I’ll bet it was fun.”

“It was only scheduled for two performances, but then got extended and did 211.”

“So it was a hit.”

“Yes, and after six years of starvation, Rogers and Hart created many more.”

” Love stories like that.”

“I do too.”

“Next time, could we have a little more time?”

“Tell you what. I’ll let you pick a straw, and if you get a short one, you get to set the clock.”

“That would be great. You’re not kidding, right?”

“I had to find a way to work stray into the conversation, so, yes, I am kidding.”

“Figures. You can make it up to me.”

“Order the Uber.”

“He’s over there.”

“It looks beat up but serviceable.”

“And the ride is free.”

“Okay, what’s the catch?”

“We have to stop at the collision shop for an estimate.”

“That’s not too bad. Okay, let’s go.”

“One more thing.”

“Oh-oh.”

“We have to leave the doors if the estimate is good.”

“Okay, that can work. It’s only two doors.”

“Um, you haven’t seen the other side.”

“All the doors?”

“My, you catch on quick. Let’s go.”

Tuesday – Anything Possible – Finger Point Prompt – “Stood”

Today, I opened Circumstances of Childhood to page 123. With my eyes closed, I pointed to the page, and nearest my finger was the word “stood.” This is the prompt for today.

Stood by John W. Howell © 2025

“I never knew what this monument stood for.”

“Well, just read the inscription.”

“So many words.”

“Oh, come on. You can do it.”

“Alright, I’ll try in memory of General Kilgore Trout, who led his troops into victory during the great Cola Wars of the 1970s and 1980s. His most notable feat was battling the return of Classic Coke in 1985. General Trout was mortally wounded in the final battle to regain Classic Coke and succumbed to his injuries in 1986.”

“There. So now you know.”

“Yes. But now that I know, I have some feeling for General Trout.”

“Feelings? What kind of feelings?”

“That maybe we have been a little disrespectful to the general’s memory.”

“How so?”

“Sitting on him and such.”

“Don’t be silly. That’s what pigeons do.”

“Well, maybe I can eat less fiber and control myself.”

“Sure, you do that.”

Stream of Consciousness Saturday – Prompt – “Favorite Place

My favorite place is the kitchen. I do a lot of work there, and it is the home of my beloved coffee machine. It sits in its mysterious blackness on its haunches, just waiting for the order to strike. One touch of the power button is like waking up a sleeping dragon. The stretches, groans, and low growl let you know that the next move must be slow and easy. A move to the two-coffee button is scrutinized and anticipated. She knows me too well. The button is touched, and the resulting eruption of activity could startle the unaware. The frothy cup is complete within seconds, and the machine shares my sigh.

One sip of the delightful brew and the quiet air is ravaged by the Westminster chimes of the doorbell, followed by the eardrum challenge of the baying hounds. A quick toss of a line caught tuna packet into the nuclear-proof room with a door slam allows the brain to stop screaming for quiet. Just who would ring that bell when the sign says “Death to those who ring this bell” is anyone’s guess. Looking at the security screen, all that is visible are the ears of some kind of creature. With a sigh, the security system shutdown began.

What stands before me looks very much like the Tasmanian Devil. He makes some noises that are not understandable and throws an envelope my way. He starts to whirl and disappears across the lawn and through the neighbor’s boxwoods. The envelope is from Linda Hill. The message inside reads:

Your Friday prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is “favorite place.” Use it any way you’d like. Enjoy!

Favorite Place by John W. Howell. © 2025

“I can tell you my favorite place.”

“So can everyone else who reads this stuff on Saturday.”

“Am I that transparent?”

“Like a sheet of Saran Wrap.”

“So yours is the kitchen.”

“Yup. I love to cook, and as I said, my coffee machine is there.”

“Where do you keep the Voo Doo Rangers?”

“In the fridge.”

“In the kitchen, right?”

“Right.”

“Then that’s my favorite place too.”

“But we are not going there.”

“Aw, how come?”

“‘Cause we do the pub on Saturdays.”

“Yeah, I know. I’ve even ordered an Uber. He’s over there.”

“Okay, how did you know about the kitchen?”

“It was a coincidence.”

“Gibbs rule number thirty-nine.”

“What’s that?”

“There’s no such thing as a coincidence.”

“Okay, I confess. You spend a lot of time in the kitchen, so when it came to ordering an Uber, I thought it would be a nice surprise.”

“Well, it is. I like the idea of heading for the pub in a kitchen.”

“And when we get there, maybe they’ll let us sit in the kitchen.”

“Too far.”

“Okay, let’s go.”

“That’s my line.”

Tuesday – Anything Possible – Prompt – Unfortunate

Today, I randomly opened Eternal Road—The final stop to page 167. With my eyes closed, I pointed to the page. The word closest to my finger was “unfortunate,” which is the prompt.

Unfortunate by John W. Howell © 2024

“Eat your food.”

“Aw, Mama, I just don’t like this.”

“Some unfortunate kids would love to have what you have.”

“Is there a way to get in touch with them?”

“Don’t be sassy, young man. ”

“If I don’t like this, how am I going to eat it?”

“If you don’t eat it, you will go to bed hungry since there is nothing else.”

“Aw gee,”

“Okay, try a little bit. Who knows, you may find it better than you think.”

“But it looks bad.”

“Close your eyes then.”

“What about the smell?”

“You know I worked hard to put this meal in front of you. I’m not pleased that you don’t like it.”

“Well, Mama. I’ll try to eat it. I just wish it wasn’t skunk.”

“That was all there was on the road.”

” Those eagle kids get fish and everything.”

“Well…We were born vultures and have to take what we can get.”

“Doesn’t seem fair.”

“That’s life, sweetheart.”

Stream of Consciousness Saturday – Prompt – Sing

A picture of a string with drops of water- the logo for SoCSThe coffee machine sends me a good morning message on the touch pad. “Good Morning, Boss. There will be a slight delay with your morning cup today. It seems that someone forgot to fill the bean reservoir. Through Bluetooth, we contacted the freezer to have a fresh supply delivered. Unfortunately, frozen beans do not work well with our grinder friends, so there was little choice but to wait until the beans thaw. All this occurred two hours ago while you were still comfy in bed. It shouldn’t be too long of a wait since our sensors feel the beans are almost ready. In addition, we checked 1925 for today, and the news is very sparse.  A reminder might be to have the bean reservoir filled after you finish the coffee in the morning. Oh, hold on. We have been informed that the beans are ready, so your cup will be delivered now.”

The familiar sound of the grinder sing causes my mouth to water and the pounding in my head to get softer. The cup is delivered, and after the first sip, it looks like my corpus will survive. The second sip brings the Westminster chime of the doorbell. Twiggy and Tempeste throw themselves against the door, and there is the sound of breaking glass in the kitchen. The resounding barks have indeed reduced the glassware to dust. A handful of treats tossed through the soundproof portal and a slam of the six-inch soundproof door cut the mayhem like a knife. My ears pound in the silence, but I must make the security system safe.

The security system must be deactivated before opening the front door and addressing the visitor. Before that, though, the SWAT team needs to be put on standby. A quick text to the leader confirms that status. Also, the flight of A-10 Warthogs must be diverted. Another call to the commander puts that worry to rest. The control panel makes the shutdown of the security system process simpler. The boiling oil vats are put on standby, the Trebuchet on safety, the concertina wire rolled, the Claymore mines reset, the tower Gattling guns disengaged, the moat net dropped, the alligators fed, the IUDs and shoulder-held rockets put away. The locks on the door are thrown.

Standing there is a pig dressed like a farmer holding a huge sunflower. He is also holding an envelope. “Y-you J-John H-Howell?” I give the pig a nod. “I-I have a m-message f-for y-you f-from L-Linda H-Hill.” “Great. Let me have it.” The sunflower showers me with water, and I can see the pig trying to stifle a laugh. Wiping my face. While holding out my hand.  The pig gives me the envelope, turns, and runs down the drive. Opening the envelope, one can see that it is a message from Linda Hill. It reads” Your Friday prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is ‘sing.” Use it any way you’d like. Have fun!

Sing by John W Howell © 2025

“I’m surprised the AI in that machine didn’t sing the message.”

“I think that would have added insult to injury.”

“I suppose so, too. By the way, how does a freezer get the beans over to the coffee machine?”

“I have no idea and really don’t want to know. Those guys make me nervous.”

“You know what’s good for nerves.”

“Call Uber.”

“I did. He’s over there.”

“Well…finally something we can be comfortable in.”

“Yeah, and we only have to make one stop.”

“One stop?”

“Yes. The driver says we have to drop the godfather off at the club.”

“The godfather? You kidding?”

“Never kid about the godfather.”
