Precious by John W. Howell © 2018

“This lady at the supermarket called me ‘precious.”‘

“What did you do?”

“What do you mean?”

“Around here if someone calls a person your age ‘precious’ it is not necessarily a compliment.”

“Oh really. I offered to help her with her bags is all.”

“Was she in a wheelchair?”

“No.”

“A walker?”

“How old was this lady?”

“I don’t know. About my age I guess.”

“Tell me what you said and what she said?”

“I said my those bags look heavy. Can I help you out with them?”

“A lady your age.”

“Yup.”

“What was her response.”

“Thank you no, I can manage.”

“So where does ‘precious’ come in?”

“I said, “But you look too delicate to handle such a load.”

“Oh my goodness. Now the ‘precious.”‘

“Yeah.”

“Okay give it to me.”

“Well, aren’t you precious.”

“That’s all?”

“A little more.”

“Go ahead.”

“She said, ‘I’m sure there is a little ole wife at home who needs your help. Why don’t you run along and give the little woman a hand?’ or something like that?”

“She call the manager?”

“No.”

“Well, that’s a break.”

“She showed me her gun.”

“What?”

“Yup. Seems she’s a police officer.”

“What did you do?”

“Put her bag back on the counter.”

“Anyone see all this?”

“Just Mrs. Murphy.”

“Radio Free Europe Murphy? The biggest gossip in town.”

“I guess.”

“We have no choice but to move.”

Had to laugh at that one, John. Men these days can’t even try to be polite or it’s misconstrued, be nasty and you’re a typical man.
As far as ‘precious’ goes for me, I could only think of Lord of the Rings “my precious”!

Ha ha ha. You are so right. I didn’t think of Lord of the Rings. Good one. 🙂

    That’s another find mess, John.

Great job with this prompt. I like the Rsfio Free Europe reference, haven’t heard that in a while.

Thanks, Dan. I used to use that reference for folks who could not keep a secret. 😀

LOL! Yep, they’ll have to move. Good one, John. “Precious” makes me think of Silence of the Lambs…one of the scariest movies I’ve ever seen. 🙂 Happy Saturday!

I know right? I thought it was going to be a different kind of movie when I went to see it. What a shocker. I put your Happy Saturday greeting on the previous comment.

Awww, John, I wish someone would offer to carry my shopping for me. I would treasure it as a precious memory and not think the person precious at all.

In a small town, this guy’s great-great-great grandchildren would be taunted by the word “precious”. It is why people move to the big city.

It’s a good humored dig at our modern society. No good deed goes without an inquiry of some kind.

It is a good way to stay out of trouble though. “My goodness that child has her father’s big bone features, bless her heart.”
