I opened My GRL randomly to page 73. Without looking, I pointed to the page, and the word closest to my finger was “wave.”
I will be away from my computer this morning and will not get to comments until later.
Wave by John W. Howell © 2024
“Look out there.”
“Where?”
“Past the third wave.”
“I don’t see anything.”
“You have to look when the wave is low.”
“Oh, I see it. What is it?”
“Hard to say from here. We have to wait until it gets closer.”
“treasure, maybe?”
“Come on, treasure doesn’t float.”
“If it is food, someone will grab it before it gets to shore.”
“You have a point. This island has been deserted forever, so the grab might be a shark.”
“What should we do?”
“We have to go out there and get it.”
“We? With a shark roaming around?”
“Alright, I’ll go.”
“My hero. How are you going to do it?”
“I figure I can grab it on the fly.”
“I see it now. It is a bag of wavy potato chips.”
“OMG. Are the gods smiling or what. No shark will grab those.”
“I haven’t seen Wavys since we left Miami Beach.”
“Remind me again why we left?”
“Peregrine Falcons.”
“Oh yeah. Not a gull’s best friend.”
“They love us, though.”
“They always want to invite us for dinner.”
“Not as a guest either.”
“Look, the Wavys are here.”
“You still know how to open that bag?”
“Never lose a skill, my son.”

I love the POV of a seagull.

Love the treasured find here, John. After being here in Miami Beach, the guls win often so you better be fast to get the treasure❣️

They do. Thanks, Cindy. 😁

haha, those gulls will eat anything (except oranges), so I don’t think they’re true Floridians.
I read MY GRL, my first introduction to your writing – and an excellent intro it was!

A fun conversation between the gulls. And potato chips certainly fit in the treasure category. I chuckled over the line “Not as a guest either.” I like the subtlety of the line 🙂

Excellent to always find unexpected treasure. I strongly believe I was a pirate in a previous life, so this speaks to me lol 😆 🏴☠️💰

It’s good that they could grab those potato chips on the fly, and not be worried about peregrines grabbing them.

Gulls have a way of figuring it out. Thanks Tim.

I immediately thought of a seagull, probably because I enjoy watching them so much when we go to the beach. Grabby birds!

Well you and I had the same thought about grabby.

Hahaha! A seagull should be able to avoid the shark and capture the Waveys, for sure!!
Buggers aren’t shy to grab something right out of your hand so this would be easy peasy 😉

Nothing like a floating bag of chips. Thanks, Dale.

As long as the bag is well sealed, all will be well 🙂

So true. Even soggy I think these guys will still take care of them.

I have to admit I’ve never read a story written through the eyes of a seagull before! Brilliant. You capture the character so well.

So many ways this story could have gone, John, but I think you chose the best one! And now you’ve got all of us hungry for potato chips!

Seagulls are one of the winners from human civilization. I remember when a seagull stole my young son’s hamburger right out of his hand.

Haha! I love this, John. You took me by surprise. One of the best animal POV stories ever. Now I’m also thinking of Red Skelton’s bird characters. Who were they? Gertrude and Heathcliff? Thanks for these smiles. Hugs.
