Today, I randomly opened Detour on the Eternal Road to page 107 and, with my eyes closed, pointed to the page. The word closest to my finger is “everything.” That is the prompt for today.
Everything by John W. Howell © 2025
“You are my everything.”
“Goodness, you make me blush.”
“No, I mean it.”
“What makes you say that?”
“You want me to detail why I feel you are my everything?”
“I think that would be nice.”
“To begin you provide for us.”
“By provide, you mean?”
“You give us sustenance.”
“Okay?”
“You always make sure we have enough to eat.”
“Oh, now I get it. Is there anything else?”
“Well, you make sure I get plenty of exercise.”
“I guess that is a good thing.”
“You make sure we never take you for granted.”
“Strange. How do I do that?”
“Well, you are very hard to catch.”
“That’s my nature.”
“You are underground and I have to listen carefully to figure out where you are.”
“Earthworms are like that.”
“But it is tough work.”
“Yes, but you robins are built for that.”
“I suppose. Well, the kids are getting pretty hungry, so we ought to get along.”
“I guess I’m invited for dinner.”
“Ha ha ha. Good one. You made me laugh and I dropped you.”
“Good luck next time.”

I love these stories, John. You keep us guessing right up to the end!

Yes, I held off on any clues until the end. I also had to make it a happy ending for the worm.

Nice twist, John. And well done by the worm.

Only here would a worm be the star.

Cunning worm right there.

Nothing like chatting with your lunch… Smart worm to make the bird laugh!

Ha ha ha. Yes. Wanted a happy ending so that was it.

Happy for the worm… not so much for the bird 😉 Most fun!

Although the bird can find another worm. If the worm is lunch that’s it for the worm
LikeLiked by 1 person
Absolutely. For the purposes of THIS story, all’s well that ends well for the worm. The bird can look for berries! 😉

Love the unexpected story twist. I thought it was a very circular love letter to your wife.💞

That could well be, Pat. Thanks. 😊

Are you saying that your wife is not only the early bird, she also catches the worms for the meal?
LikeLiked by 1 person
Nope, just that she is my everything.

I could not figure out who was talking until the end. I first thought it was a male and female of an insect species where the male impregnates the female and then gets eaten!

An earthworm making a robin laugh and let it go is lifesaving, at least temporarily.

I love the idea of temporary.

If you’ve ever watched a robin pulling out an earthworm, you can see why it’s good exercise for it.

I used to watch them when I lived in Michigan.

You had me humming that old song by the Silver Convention . . . Fly Robin Fly!
I missed the part with the earthworm talking his way out of coming to dinner though . . .

He made a joke, and the robin dropped him while laughing.
