Stream of Consciousness Saturday – Prompt – Puzzle

A picture of a string with drops of water- the logo for SoCS

It was a beautiful day, and I was outside trying to remove the spark plug on the lawnmower. As I left the house, I was asked why clean a spark plug on a lawnmower that I will never use again. I pretty much ducked giving my honest answer since I didn’t have a good reason other than the fact that it needed it. However, I knew that my twisted logic wouldn’t fly, so I mumbled something about wanting it in tip-top shape to sell it. That seemed to do the trick since there was no follow-up inquiry.

I decided to sit on the patio to remove the plug. As I withdrew the dirty article, I could hear a commotion coming from the neighbor’s yard. Because of the privacy fence, I can’t usually see what is going on over there. However, I could make out the sounds of a person having some kind of stressful interaction with what sounded like a pack of dogs. Almost instantly, two hands appeared on my fence top, and I guessed that they would be soon followed by a cascading body. Sure enough, a hulk dressed in a USPS uniform landed with a thud in the center of a bed filled with vincas.

I asked if the person was okay. They had a puzzled look on their face, so I also asked if they needed me to call 9-1-1. They assured me everything was fine but wondered if I knew a John Howell. I offered that I did indeed know a John Howell and confessed that I was the very same. Without rising from the vincas, his hand shot up in the air holding an envelope. He asked that I take it, which I did. He then asked about the dogs next door, and I had to tell him that the neighbors don’t have dogs. He raised himself in a manner that could only be described as guarded. I asked him why he didn’t deliver the letter to my mailbox, and he responded by pointing out the special delivery stamp. As he was in a sad state and missing most of the backside of his pants, I decided not to ask any more questions. He limped toward the gate and let himself out. So the question of the dogs and why the unorthodox delivery remains a puzzle.

I opened the letter and inside was this note. Your Friday prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is “puzzle.” Use it any way you’d like! Puzzle by John W. Howell © 2021

“You left us hanging.”

“What?”

“That story in the intro. You totally left us up in the air.”

“Well, that does happen.”

“Yeah, but in this case, it’s not fair. What were the dogs doing next door?”

“They weren’t dogs. They were a pack of wolves.”

“Wolves. Where are there any wolves around here?”

“In my mind. This is fiction, remember?”

“Come on. Even fiction has to make sense. Why did the mailperson go to the wrong address?”

“He was new and got turned around.”

“What was he doing in the neighbor’s backyard?”

“He figured out he had the wrong place, so he was taking a shortcut.”

“What about the vincas?”

“We don’t have vincas, so everything is okay.”

“Why didn’t you put all this in the story?”

“I knew you would be here and asking me to explain the puzzle.”

“You’re kidding.”

“Yes.”

“Who’s turn to buy the beer.”

“Yours.”

“Why did you say that?”

“Cause if you knew you would have said, ‘It’s your turn.'”

“It’s your turn.”

“Too late.”

“Sheesh, another puzzle.”

Stream of Consciousness Saturday – Prompt – “Nerve”

It is Stream of Consciousness Saturday, and I got a message attached to a snowball from Linda Hill. Here is what she said.

“Your Friday prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is “nerve.” Use it any way you’d like. Have fun!”

The Friday Reminder and Prompt for #SoCS Feb. 20, 2021

Nerve by John W. Howell © 2021

“You’ve got a lot of nerve.”

“Who you talking to?”

“The curbside food delivery people. Hold on. Okay, then just eliminate the light fluid but keep the antifreeze. Can’t do that either? Well, cancel the order then. Bye.”

“What was that all about?”

“I decided to order this week’s groceries on-line. After I placed the order, I got a notice that a couple of things weren’t authorized for curbside pick up.”

“Lighter fluid and antifreeze?”

“Yes.”

“Why do you need those?”

“Well, the fluid is so I can light my candles with my lighter.”

“And the antifreeze?”

“So I can protect my car engine from freezing.”

“Seems odd that you would wait for cold weather to protect your engine.”

“I drained some of the antifreeze and put it in my toilets.”

“What kind of insane person does that?”

“I didn’t want them to freeze.”

“Who said they would.”

“No one, it just makes sense.”

“To who?”

“Whom.”

“I mean, the heat in your house would keep them from freezing.”

“Uh-huh.”

“Tell me about the heat.”

“You know I have natural gas.”

“I didn’t, but go ahead.”

“The lines froze.”

“So your heater doesn’t work.”

“Right.”

“What about your pipes?”

“Might be frozen too.”

“What are you going to do?”

“Ask to stay with you.”

“Sure, no problem, but I meant about the frozen pipes.”

“Buy bottled water. Take a shower at your house.”

“The pipes are going to break with the expanding ice.”

“Nah.”

“Why ‘nah?”‘

“Drained out the water and filled them with some of that noxious liquor you gave me over the years.”

“The 25-year-old bourbon?”

“Yup, ten bottles filled them up, right beautiful.”

“I don’t know what to say.”

“I could have used beer, but I didn’t have the nerve.”

“Okay, I give.”

“It would have been a big sacrifice. Besides, beer does freeze. Want one while it is still liquid?”

“Yeah, maybe. I keep thinking of that 1000 dollars floating around in your pipes.”

“It will still be there in the spring.”

“Never thought of that.”

“I saved the bottles.”

“Good man. Here’s to ya. You ready to go?”

“Got room for five cases of Bud?”

“Not at one sitting.”

Stream of Consciousness Saturday – Prompt – “Sky’s the Limit”

It is Stream of Consciousness time again, and here comes Linda Hill. She has a balloon on a string and an envelope attached to the string. I’ll bet it is the prompt for today.

“Hi, Linda. Want to come inside.”

“No thanks, John. I just need to deliver this prompt.”

“I like the balloon.”

“Well, grab the envelope and open it. See you.”

“Bye, Linda. Now let me see. I’ll open the envelope. Oops, the balloon just got away. Wow, look at it, climb. The sky’s the limit for that sucker. Let me see what the note says.”

Your prompt for #JusJoJan and Stream of Consciousness Saturday is: “sky’s the limit.” Write about something that has or seems to have no end. Enjoy!

The Sky’s the Limit by John W. Howell © 2021

“Hey, why are you looking up at the sky?”

“I just lost a balloon.”

“A balloon. What kind of craziness are you up to now? Oh, wait. The Saturday prompt, right?”

“That’s right. It came from Linda Hill on the end of a balloon.”

“Let me guess. You opened the envelope, and the balloon got away.”

“Once again, you qualify as a clairvoyant.”

“Only you would lose a balloon chasing something as dumb as this Saturday thing.”

“The prompt is for us to talk about something that is endless.”

“Yeah, so what have you chosen? The height that the balloon will go?”

“No, that’s not it.”

“The amount of time you will spend on this prompt.”

“Very funny.”

“Okay, I give up. What is it.”

“Your criticism of my prompt activities.”

“Huh?”

“It’s endless. You are always criticizing. Never supportive.”

“Now, wait a minute. People will get the wrong idea.”

“About you?”

“No, about you.”

“What do you mean?”

“You should be writing about big endless things like freedom.”

“Freedom can end.”

“Don’t we know that. How about endless possibilities.”

“That does sound better. Possibilities to do what?”

“Do something else on Saturday besides the prompt.”

“There you go.”

“You left yourself wide open.”

“I give up.”

“Beer time?”

“You’re buying.”

Stream of Consciousness Saturday – Prompt – “Silent/Silence.”

Stream of Consciousness

It is Stream of Consciousness Saturday time again and this week’s prompt is “silent/silence. Let’s let Linda Hill explain. “Your Friday prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is “silent/silence.” Use one or both in your post. Have fun!”

Ah yes, the old order to have fun. If you would like to have fun with a prompt visit, Linda’s blog and read how easy it is. Here is the link.

The Friday Reminder and Prompt for #SoCS June 1/19

Silent/Silence by John W. Howell © 2019

“Hello, darkness my old friend.”

“Now what?”

“I’ve come to talk to you again.”

“Stop. Your singing reminds me of fingernails on a blackboard.”

“Because a vision softly creeping.”

“You invited me over. Stop, or I’m leaving.”

“Left its seeds while I was sleeping
And the vision that was planted in my brain
Still remains
Within the sound of silence. Okay, I’m done.”

“What’s up with the Song of Silence?”

“Well you know today is Stream of Consciousness Saturday.”

“Yes. Isn’t every Saturday the same.”

“Yes. This week I thought I would do something different.”

“Oh, like the rest of your crowd won’t think about this song.”

“Yeah, I think they will.”

“So what’s so different?”

“I sang the first stanza.”

“Yeah, so.”

“Now I have let loose and earworm that will take over the population.”

“You are nuts. You know that?”

“Tell me you don’t hear that song.”

“Okay I do, but it won’t last long.”

“In restless dreams, I walked alone.”

“Ouch.”

“Narrow streets of cobblestone.”

“I get it. Stop.”

“‘Neath the halo of a street lamp
I turned my collar to the cold and damp
When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light
That split the night
And touched the sound of silence.”
“Let me try. And in the naked light, I saw
Ten thousand people, maybe more.”
“Gotcha.”
“People talking without speaking
People hearing without listening
People writing songs that voices never share
And no one dared
Disturb the sound of silence. Help me.”
“Naw. You are doomed. See you next week. Good luck getting rid of that one.”

Stream of Consciousness Saturday – Prompt “Art”

Stream of Consciousness

It is Stream of Consciousness Saturday time again and this weeks prompt is “art.” Linda Hill directs that we should “Talk about something that’s hanging on your wall. Add a picture.” Well, that sounds fun. If you would like to join in on this type of escapade visit Linda’s blog and read how. Here is the link.

The Friday Reminder for #SoCS & #JusJoJan 2019 Daily Prompt – Jan. 12th

Art by John W. Howell © 2019

“Hey, Art.”

“What?”

“What are you doing?”

“I’m supposed to describe something hanging on my wall.”

“Other than the spaghetti from last night?”

“Very funny. No, I’m supposed to describe a piece of art. I can even include a photo.”

“Wow, you know how to have fun. So go ahead.”

“This piece of art was done by John Gable who lives in Maine. It is a watercolor and is titled, “Before the Parade.”

“Okay tell me more.”

“The painting shows two vintage automobiles waiting at the side of the road for the parade to begin. One of them is hardly visible.  The cars will be in the parade, and you can see that the day is a warm one as the drivers are waiting in the shade.”

“Sounds like a slice of life.”

“Also a large truck is on the road and passing the two waiting.”

“So what does this painting tell you?”

“I would say that John Gable paints in a photo-realism style. He brings a level of detail into his work which is amazing. This looks like a moment in time captured forever.”

“When did you get this piece.”

“I was in Maine in the early eighties and bought it from John then.”

“I must say it is beautiful.”

“I agree.”

Stream of Consciousness Saturday – Prompt “Tin.”

Stream of Consciousness

Aggregating my thoughts today made  me realize it is Stream of Consciousness Saturday and this weeks prompt is “tin.” Linda Hill instructs that we can use the word of a word containing “tin.” She also advises having fun and offers bonus points if we begin and end the post with the word “tin” or a word with “tin” in it. So now you know why there is an unusual beginning to this post.  If you would like an aneurysm, please participate. You can do that by visiting Linda Hill’s blog and reading up on the latest mental health methods. Here is the link.  https://lindaghill.com/2018/12/21/the-friday-reminder-and-prompt-for-socs-dec-22-18/

Tin by John W. Howell © 2018

“This sign will be pinpointing some of my neighbor’s flaws.”

“I think you might be overreacting.”

“To someone who is afflicting me with such aggravation.”

“Tell me the situation, and maybe I can be helpful in deflecting your anger.”

“The guy lets his dog use my yard as a privy and is tainting my environment.”

“Did you have a conversation about the urinating?”

“Of course I did. He began advocating that it was really my fault.”

“Your fault? That must have been aggravating.”

“I’ll say. The brigantine suggested that I build a fence.”

“That does sound like he is conflating the issue.”

“I’d love to know what that means. It’s like I’m consorting with Merriam Webster.”

“It means mixing two elements. I think he is detracting from the real issue.”

“Yeah, no kidding. That’s why I’m dedicating this sign to him.”

“For what it is worth I think you will be escalating the tension.”

“I don’t see how. All this sign says is keep your dog off my property you disgusting idiot you.”

“What if someone put that up and was pointing to restricting your behavior?”

“If I were committing the same offense, I would expect it.”

“Well then, I guess I’m reluctantly consenting to your move.”

“Thank you so much for the attempt at correcting my behavior, but I must do this.”

“Need a hammer for detonating what I’m sure will be WWIII?”

“Very funny. I hope the guy at least finds this sign disrupting.”

“I think you will be ratcheting the tension ”

“I certainly hope so. By the way, do you have any turpentine?”

Stream of Consciousness Saturday – Prompt -Start with a Noun

Stream of Consciousness

It is Stream of Consciousness Saturday time again. This weeks prompt is “start with a noun.” Linda Hill describes the exercise as starting the post with a noun and then base the post on the noun. Sounds fun. If you would like to join in, go to Linda’s place and read how. Here is the link

https://lindaghill.com/2018/06/08/the-friday-reminder-and-prompt-for-socs-june-9-18/

Start with a Noun by John W. Howell © 2018

“Diploma.”

“What did you say?”

“I said diploma.”

“Okay, and what is that supposed to mean?”

“Well this weekend is graduation time, and I was thinking of all the young people who are getting their diplomas.”

“So what deep thoughts do you have?”

“Nothing deep.”

“Not surprising.”

“Just a feeling of hope that all the dreams that go with a diploma have some chance of coming true.”

“You said nothing deep. This sounds pretty deep to me.”

“I don’t know about that. I do know that there is a sense of newness around being recognized for achieving academic goals.”

“Oh, I get it. The diploma is a symbol of a new beginning.”

“Now that you put it that way, I say yes it does.”

“I have to agree with you.”

“And maybe one other thing.”

“Okay, what’s that?”

“I would gift each and every graduate with the best wishes possible.”

“Might be nice to wish each finds themselves in this busy world.”

“Yeah, that too.”

Stream of Consciousness Saturday – Prompt “Why/Y”

Stream of Consciousness

Why lookie there. The Sears Calendar on the barn wall tells me it is Stream of Consciousness Saturday again. Of course, the year is not 1901, but it is still Saturday. This week’s prompt is “Why/Y.” Yeah I know looks goofy but let me explain. Linda hill says we should use a word that begins with Y as a theme for our post today. Also, the extra point potential lies in beginning and ending the post with the word, “why.” So far so good I would say. If you would like to challenge your brain to a chicken run, drop by Linda’s post and find out how. Here is the link https://lindaghill.com/2018/04/27/the-friday-reminder-and-prompt-for-socs-april-28-18/

Why/Y by John W. Howell © 2018

“Why did you by a used Yago?”

“Why not?”

“I love it when you answer a question with a question.”

“It is the only way to avoid an answer.”

“So tell me. What prompted you to buy that thing?”

“Have you ever heard the concept of collector’s item.”

“Of course I have. I usually think of a collector’s item as a piece of art or antique.”

“Yeah, well that’s where most people make a mistake. Ever hear of an AC Cobra?”

“Yes, it was a roadster built by Carroll Shelby in the sixties.”

“Very good. You know how much one in pristine condition sells for today?”

“Oh, I would guess around three hundred thousand.”

“Try a million five.”

“You have got to be kidding.”

“Nope. So now you have the answer to your Yago question.”

“Did you say pristine?”

“On the Cobra? Yeah.”

“What about that missing tire and hood on your Yago?”

“Cosmetic. All fixable.”

“Engine?”

“Can be repaired.”

“Windshield.”

“New one is three hundred bucks.”

“I only have two questions.”

“What are those.”

“Yugo? why?”

Stream of Consciousness Saturday – Prompt “OC”

Stream of Consciousness

Occupying my post today is Stream of Consciousness Saturday. So true. This weeks prompt is “oc.” That is correct, and the rules as laid down by the dungeon master, Linda Hill is to find a word that starts with “oc,” and use it. There are bonus points redeemable for a new Tesla if one starts and ends the post with an “oc” word. So now you know why the goofy opening. If you have some kind of desire to grapple with reality, go to Linda’s blog to find out how to attach your own electrodes. Here is the link.

“OC” by John W. Howell © 2018

“Occasionally I like to indulge in some creative writing.”

“As a person who occupies space in your life, I didn’t know this.”

“Well, it’s true. I like to dabble in the occult.”

“Have you any experience with an occult occurrence?”

“No. I like to make up the story. I’m not an occultist.”

“So you like to scare yourself. Do you do it to occlude a brain leak?”

“Can I just enjoy a leisure occupation without causing a major inquisition?”

“Well, I could see you being an oceanographer and writing about the sea.”

“What makes you say that? Is your octogenarian mind having a crisis?”

“No. I just think it would be nice to read about oceanfronts and the animals of the sea.”

“I see nothing wrong with an occasional story about the sea.”

“Now you are talking. What kind of ocean story to do you in mind?”

“I can see a group of whales who decide to hold an ochlocracy gathering.”

“Why would they hold a political meeting? Not enough octopus available?”

“Very funny. No, they want to start a coven of Occult Orcas.”

“Cute. I suppose you’ll find a way to work in Occult Orcas octupling?”

“I think you should be heading off into the ocaso.”*

*Spanish for sunset.

Stream of Consciousness Saturday – Prompt “which/witch/wich.”

Stream of Consciousness

Which day is today?

Stream of Consciousness Saturday of course. Today’s prompt is “which/witch/wich. Linda Hill also has some informative words. “Start your post with the word “which” and try to fit the word “witch” in somewhere if you can. Bonus points if you use a word that ends in “wich.” As an added rule this week, you will lose all the points you’ve ever earned if you type “which witch is which” anywhere in your post. Have fun!”  You think it is easy being a prompt head, don’t you? Well, so far I’m okay. I started the post with which so I have that done. Now to work in witch and a word ending in wich. If you would like to become addicted to this fun visit Linda Hill’s blog at https://lindaghill.com/2017/10/27/the-friday-reminder-and-prompt-for-socs-oct-2817/.  You can read all about how to take the first dose.

Which/witch/wich by John W. Howell © 2017

“Which one are you?”

“I’m the guy who drove you home.”

“Oh. Did I thank you for that help?”

“No, not really. I think the barf in my front seat was thanks enough.”

“My word. I did that?”

“Yes.you did. Your friends took care of the backseat.”

“My friends?”

“Yes, that group of guys who were with you.”

“Wow. I don’t even remember a group of guys. By the way how come you are still here this morning?”

“You swallowed my keys.”

“I did what?”

“You thought I was too drunk to drive, so you took my keys and swallowed them.”

“Were you?”

“Too drunk?”

“Yes.”

“I don’t drink.  You were definitely drunk though.”

“Yeah, I get that. Soooo where did you sleep?”

“On your couch.”

“Thank goodness. you weren’t in my bed then.

“No, I was not in your bed.”

“I am such a witch sometimes. Er, I don’t mean that to be a bad thing. Um, you are handsome and everything but I was too drunk for love.”

“I understand. I think I better get going.”

“What about your keys?”

“Oh, you got rid of them about three-thirty and threw them to me.”

“Don’t tell me I heaved the keys.”

“On my chest. On your couch.”

“How can I make it up to you?”

“It’s okay. It was an interesting time for sure.”

“But you must have been miserable.”

“No. I found that the experience broadened my view of life.”

“How so?”

“Made me aware of new rules.”

“New rules? Like what?”

“Before being forced from a party to drive someone like you home, always grab a sandwich.”

“A sandwich?”

“A sandwich.”

“Why a sandwich?”

“You’ll always have a choice of what to eat when you have a sandwich.”
