Welcome to my shingle-hanging announcement, folks! As of today, I’m open for business as an editor of indie books destined for publication on Amazon et al.

I’m calling the operation Indie-Scribable. Indie for the indie part, and “scribable” for scribes. Clever, eh?

I haven’t talked about it on the blog, but for most of my career I was an editor. I started at a medical publisher back in St. Louis, copyediting three or four different journals — such learned organs as Investigative Ophthalmology and Visual Science, the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, and, my favorite, the Journal of Enterostomal Therapy! Oh joy.

After that I was managing editor of the American Heart Association journal, Circulation, and then the Journal of the American College of Cardiology.

I didn’t grow up in the 1950s, but I didn’t have to because the author put me smack-dab in the middle of them (then later in the 60s).

Wednesday Story day – AKA – Hump Day #JusJoJan

Wednesday Story day again. Last week we witnessed Ben shooting himself and the rest of the group trying to figure out what to do with him. Meanwhile poor Ben is still bleeding, and Mrs. Worthe has come up with a plan to drop Ben at the hospital with a wild story about being jumped by a gang. Alexis and her father responded when Mrs. Worthe wanted confirmation they understood what to do. Mrs. Worth asked Ben if he knew the plan and last week he didn’t answer. We should go back and see what has happened to Ben.
“Ben do you understand the plan. Ben open your eyes and look at me.”
“You still here Mrs. Worthe?”
“Of course, I’m here.”
“That means I’ve gone to hell.”
“Shut up Ben. You’ve gone nowhere. You have a little gunshot wound is all. Quit being so dramatic.”
“Dramatic? Hand me that gun and I’ll give you a shot in the foot, and you can see what dramatic looks like.”
“Now Ben Mommy is just trying to help.”
“I feel her warmth, Alexis. I suppose we ought to get moving.”
“Good boy Ben. Now you are thinking with something other than your low self-esteem.”
“You going to the hospital with me Mrs. Worthe?”
“You bet. I don’t trust you will tell the story right. I’ve decided to go in with you and tell the story. All you have to do is moan and groan and hopefully make the hospital staff want to get yo out as soon as possible.”
“What is the story again. I was in shock when you told it before.”
“Damn Ben. You are the slowest you know that?”
“You want me to tell a different story then?”
“Just tell him, Mommy.”
“Okay, Ben. You were jumped by a gang, and then you passed out, and when you woke up, you had this wound.”
“Passed out. Why would I pass out?’
“You were hit on the head I suppose.”
“Wouldn’t I have a bump or something?”
“Bump where?”
“Well, on the head. If I passed out wouldn’t there be a sign I was hit?”
“Good point Ben. Alexis hand me that fireplace poker.”

“I still don’t see who you are pointing at.”

“Oh, that guy. Yes, I see him. What’s the problem?”

“You don’t notice something odd about him?”

“Maybe I’m still looking at the wrong guy. You mean the guy with the backpack, in the white shirt, talking on the phone, walking towards us.”

“Bingo. You and I are talking about the same guy.”

“So why the interest?”

“You said it.”

“Said what?”

“You said the guy walking toward us.”

“Yeah, so?”

“Don’t you get it?”

“Get what?”

“He’s walking.”

“OMG. I didn’t notice.”

“He is the only guy I have seen in months who has no wheels. He’s walking.”

“I need to take a picture of this. Can you imagine going around like that? The people back home won’t believe it.”

Friday JohnKu – AKA TGIF

Friday again and not a moment too soon. This week was a short one but is still nice to hit the finish line intact. I say this even though I’m not out there in the work world. I have to admit some of the pain of that life is beginning to fade. I have now been a full-time writer for almost four years and it seems some of the bad memories have slid into the background. The foreground continues to be full of some pleasant memories of forty-five years of work. So here is hoping this process continues and by the time it’s all over there will only be the good ones to hang onto. Today’s JohnKu talks about memories.

Rave Reviews Book Club Wants You – #RRBC

As you may know, I am a member of the Rave Reviews Book Club. What you may not know is the reason I joined and what the Club has meant to me. Let me clear these last points up.

I joined Rave Reviews Book Club to become associated with like-minded writers who were interested in promoting each other’s work. At the time, I looked at some organizations and had made the decision not to associate myself with them due to what I considered unusual quid pro quo requirements.

By quid pro quo, I’m referring to the practice of following each other if followed, reviewing each others books if reviewed and other scratch my back, and I’ll scratch yours kind of programs. At the time, these practices seemed a little shady to me and so I passed.

Then I had a chance to read a blog by an RRBC member and decided to visit the site. What I found was a whole new kind of club. RRBC is a place where others supported each other with blog tours, twitter messages, and a management team interested in Indie author success. Well, I signed up and let me now quote some statistics.

When I joined RRBC, I had about 600 Twitter followers. Today I have over 5,300 followers. I did not get these followers by an aggressive plan of following and then following back. These followers came to me because they saw I was promoting my fellow authors and would in all probability support them as well. There are over 400 members of RRBC and not all follow me so as you can see these are not just member followers.
When I joined RRBC, my first book My GRL was resting near the bottom of the Amazon ranking pile. Each time the club got behind the book (Book of the Month, Spotlight Author), the rank shot up into the five figures and held there for several days.
When I joined the club, I had twelve reviews for My GRL. Currently, My GRL has forty-four reviews that have come as a result of the publicity. Of the forty-four, nine are by club members. It can be said although all club members don’t review any individual book those that do, add substantially to the information new readers want to know before buying.

So why don’t you go to the Rave Reviews Book Club site and take a look at all the activities? You never know it may be something you want to join. (Full disclosure: I am a member of the Board of Governors, the Tweet Support Team, and host or co-host of four Radio broadcasts. YES I’m biased)
