Tuesday – Anything Possible – Kreative Kue #265

In Keiths words. “Using this photo (below) as inspiration, write a short story, flash fiction, scene, poem; anything, really; even just a caption for the photograph. Either put it (or a link to it) in a comment or email it to me at keithchanning@gmail.com before 6pm next Sunday (if you aren’t sure what the time is where I live, this link will tell you). If you post it on your own blog or site, a link to this page would be appreciated, but please do also mention it in a comment here.

Go on. You know you want to. Let your creativity and imagination soar. I shall display the entries next Monday.”

Kreative Kue #265

Tea Time by John W. Howell © 2020

“Look out for that cart.”

“Yeah, I’m clear of it. Thanks for the warning, though.”

“I’m telling you these folks heading for their tea are downright dangerous.”

“Don’t you think it ironic the woman is in a cart, and the Tea place is named the Tea Caddy?”

“It sort of caught my funny bone, yes.”

“Next, we’ll be seeing golf balls dropping on the street.”

“Yes, and men in golf shoes click-clacking all over the place.”

“Good thing we are pretty far from the golf course, or this could be a reality.”

“So where to now?”

“How about we head over to the fabric store. There are some tweeds that I have been dying to check out.”

“Tweeds?”

“Yeah, I might want to have a jacket made.”

“For what occasion?”

“Nothing special. Just to have it.”

“I don’t think I’ve ever seen you in anything but a t-shirt.”

“I know. I think it’s time to upgrade a little. I might want to have something that doesn’t have advertising on it.”

“Boy, that just doesn’t sound like you. Everything okay?”

“Just because I want a jacket?”

“How are you and Steve getting along?”

“Just fine. It’s just a jacket.”

“You having an affair?’

“Oh please. Never mind. Let’s just go to the t-shirt place and see if there is anything fun there.”

“If you don’t want to tell me, that’s okay. I’m just your best friend is all.”

“There is nothing to tell.”

“I might want to look at some tweeds.”

“Is Ralph cheating on you?”

“No. Me looking at tweeds is normal. You not so much.”

“How about some ice-cream?”

“You depressed?”

“For gosh sakes.”

“I got it, right?”

“It’s just ice cream.”

“Sure,”

Top Ten Things Not to Do at The First Mention of Scotch Whisky in 1495

Scots whiskey

This week marks the 525th anniversary of the development of Scot’s whiskey. Although we are not certain of the exact date, it was this week that commemorates the written evidence of its existence. I published this post last year, but I think some of you may have missed it. Here it is again.

The anniversary of the first written record of Scotch Whisky appears in Exchequer Rolls of Scotland in 1495, and Friar John Cor is the distiller. What is not recorded is how the folks at the time reacted to this new development. Just in case time travel becomes a reality, here is a list of Things Not to Do as you visit this new development. The hope is it will keep you out of trouble or, more importantly preventing you from causing a tear in the time continuum that might preclude the development of this beneficial elixir. (gasp) So if you are going, take this list and be careful. You will have the benefit of all humankind in your hands.

10  If you witness the mention of Scotch whiskey in 1495, do not ask for your portion on the rocks. If you do, at best, no one will understand you. At worst, your host will think you odd but will add some stones to your chalice. (Ignoring the fact that you don’t know where these rocks have been, Hido, you need to smile and drink your portion. Yeah, overlook those little floating bits at the top.)

9  If you witness the mention of Scotch whiskey in 1495, do not forget to tip Tiny the WWF champ who is an usher at Lindores Abbey in Fife. If you do, at best Tiny will make sure you miss the tasting by ten minutes. At worst, Tiny, who just finished losing his jousting match, will view your oversight as a vote for his opponent. (Now you have gone and done it, Hilton. Tiny is still trying to recover his self-esteem, and that piece of silver would have gone a long way. Might as well relax during the spinning body drop. It only hurts for a little while.)

8 If you witness the mention of Scotch whiskey in 1495, do not be confused by the description ‘aqua vitae VIII bolls of malt.’ and ask out loud, ‘where’s the Scotch whiskey?’ If you do, at best, everyone will be confused. At worst, the guards will take you to the tower for a few questions like, ‘How long have you practiced witchcraft?’ (Might be best to tell the guards you have the flu and were out of your head with fever, Hiram. That rack looks like it might be painful.)

7 If you witness the mention of Scotch whiskey in 1495, do not attempt to get on your horse to ride back to the inn after you’ve sampled a few flagons of Brother John Cor’s invention. If you do, at best, you’ll realize it is not the thing to do. At worst, you and your horse will eventually be pulled over by James IV’s guards and booked into the dungeon. (Apparently, there is a law against riding under the influence (RUI), Holland. Now you are going to have a permanent record on file.)

6 If you witness the mention of Scotch whiskey in 1495, do not ask for chips and salsa to go with your portion. If you do, at best, you’ll get a joint of mutton. At worst, the king’s chef will demand to know how to make this chips and salsa thingy you requested. (Looks like this guy is a relative of Tiny the way he keeps swinging that butcher knife around, Holman. You know how to make it right? If not, you know how to run, don’t you?)

5 If you witness the mention of Scotch whiskey in 1495, do not volunteer when Brother John Cor talks about a smoke. If you do, at best you’ll have helpers to fetch the peet. At worst, everyone else knows John Cor is not talking about a doobie but needs more peet to fire up his malting operation. (That peet operation is dirty and sweaty, Homayoun. You gotta dig bricks of it and carry it five miles to the abbey. You want to avoid this if at all possible. Of course, now it is too late. Better hit the time machine and disappear.)

4 If you witness the mention of Scotch whiskey in 1495, do not ask for a jug to go. If you do, at best John Cor will think you are joking. At worst, he will try to find something to house the scotch. (Sadly, all he can find is an earthen pot that was used to feed the dog, Honon. Your first sip at home will let you know that the dog’s primary food source was whatever the humans didn’t want. Your scotch now has the essence of hog entrail with a finish of fish head.)

3 If you witness the mention of Scotch whiskey in 1495, do not suggest putting the whiskey aside for twelve years. If you do, at best, all the king’s men will laugh you off the island. At worst, John Cor will. take your suggestion, and there will be no scotch before it’s time. (Your only worry now, Hormheb is how to avoid ten thousand archers, lancers, swordsmen, catapult operators, and knights for the next twelve years. Yeah, I didn’t think you wanted to try. Hit the way back machine.)

2 If you witness the mention of Scotch whiskey in 1495, do not try to explain soda to John Cor. If you do, at best, he will be confused. At worst, he will be offended that you think his product needs enhancement. (You can stop singing the song ‘Scotch and soda, mud in your eye, baby do I feel high, oh, me oh, my,’ Hosea. John is still not going to unlock that dungeon door.)

1 If you witness the mention of Scotch whiskey in 1495, do not put on a tartan kilt without knowing its history. If you do, at best, no one in the abbey is at war with the clan represented by what you are wearing. At worst, you picked the tartan of the most aggressive clan on the island. (You have two choices, Houman. Either pick up that broad sword and start defending yourself or drop the kilt and try to convince those advancing Scots that you were just joking. Maybe the fact that you don’t wear underwear under a kilt will underscore your claim of a joke.)

Views of the Neighborhood – Morale Boosters

There is a street here in Lakeway where the residents decided to give themselves and anyone who drove by some encouragement during this pandemic. The signs are the creation of John and Marilee Eitel in an effort to lift spirits during the quarantine.  This idea was born in Rollingwood here in Travis county. Here is the story in Astonia magazine. The proceeds of the sale of the signs go to the Flatwater Foundation a group that provides mental health services to families impacted by a cancer diagnosis.

Good advice from MC Hammer. Even a remodel got involved.

Views of the Neighborhood

The Beastie Boys have the right idea.

Famous words of Matthew McConaughey, an Austin resident.

Travis Scott is represented.

We share Willie Nelson’s wish.

The Police were clairvoyant.

Thank you, Billy Idol.

The Talking Heads said a lot.

A good summary by The Beatles.

You can almost hear those steel drums of Bob Marley.

I think The Little Mermaid says it well.

I hope you enjoyed the walk and the spirit of this neighborhood.

Stream of Consciousness Saturday – Prompt “Spay/Splay/Spray

It is Stream of Consciousness Saturday time again, and here is Linda Hill to explain this week’s prompt. “Your Friday prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is “spay/splay/spray.” Use one, use two, use ’em all, it’s up to you. Have fun!”

So there you have it. If you would like to have fun, please visit Linda’s blog and read how. Here is the link.

The Friday Reminder and Prompt for #SoCS May 30/2020

Spay/Splay/Spray by John W. Howell © 2020

“Oh, my goodness.”

“What?”

“Just saw the prompt for this week.”

“Ah. The Hill Hilarity. What is it?”

“Spay/Splay/Spray.”

“Hmmm. There are the obvious uses.”

“Who wants to talk about neutered pets, legs, or mosquitoes?”

“You could go in a completely different direction.”

“Yeah, like what?”

“Well, Spay is a town in Germany located in a great wine production area.”

“Okay, I guess that would be interesting. What wine?”

“Riesling.”

“Yum. I like a nice Riesling.”

“You could also talk about splay without mentioning body parts.”

“I don’t see how.”

“There is an architecture term splay that describes an angle of a wall from a door or window that makes it wider the further away from the door or window.”

“Not sure I could pull that off. I don’t really understand .”

“Think of a window that also has a window seat. You have the window, and then the walls come into the room at an angle, so there is room for the seat. It’s called a splay at the wide part in the room.”

“I guess I get that. What about spray?”

“I think you are stuck with the idea of droplets of liquid. You could describe different kinds of spray.”

“Or just stick with spay and splay.”

“What fun is that? You could talk about the spray of the sea.”

“Okay, then here is my attempt. A little haiku, which should keep the Hillster happy. Ahem.

In the town of Spay,

There’s a window with a splay . . .

Safe from ocean spray.

How’s that?”

“I’m no critic, but am wanting to move on with the day.”

“so?”

“Close enough for government work.”

Friday JohnKu – AKA – TGIF

“Hey, Twiggy, look t that.”
“What is it?”
“A baby deer asleep by our artichoke agave.”
“Can we play with it?”
“Its mother wouldn’t like that for sure. We can look though.”
“And bark.”

Friday is here again, and for all those who were called into work, it will be a short eight hours until you can go back to your quarantine headquarters. For the rest of us, it is Friday. By the way, I used to have trouble spelling ‘quarantine’ before the COVID-19 situation. For one reason or another, it seems to have taken care of itself. The word pops out of my head, correctly spelled. I guess that is a good thing.

Still sending out queries. Again not hearing back, so the status is quo.

We are getting more openings in Texas, and with the opportunities come more cases of the virus. I guess the decision to open has to be made to allow the economy to function. We cannot go on forever with a closed economy. I just wish I didn’t see clusters of people at beaches, in parks, and on boats. I’m still laying low since a case of the virus would do me in for sure.

Today’s John Ku was inspired by a birthday this last week and is all about wishing you well. I hope you have a super weekend.

When it comes to wishes,

The best is for peace.

Thursday – A Little Personal – Twiggy and Lucy Outside

Twiggy and Lucy

“Hey, Twiggy. The sod is looking okay.

“What’s that fence doing there?”

“I think it’s to keep us from splashing through the puddles.”

“I’m looking at this grass, Lucy. It looks a lot better than the new stuff.”

“Remember how it looked when it first went in.”

“Oh yeah. I remember.”

“I’m hoping the rest gets to look like this.”

“I think we need to stop worrying about the lawn.”

“You are right, little one. It is on its own now.”

“What are these things, Lucy?”

“Those are hummingbird feeders, Little One.”

“Do we feed everyone around here?”

“No, Little One. Just the hummingbirds.”

“Okay, Lucy. I think I need some lunch.”

“That sounds good to me too. Here let me get the door.”

“I guess we should call the folks Little One unless you can make lunch.”

“Yeah, a real good idea, Lucy. I’ll bark. That always brings them quick.”

Wednesday Story Day – AKA – Hump Day

Hump Day
“Look me in the eye, Lucy.”
“What Little One?”
“Don’t Tell me it’s not Friday.”
“It’s not Friday.”
“I said not to tell me that.”

It is Wednesday Story Day again, and last week we were here when Larry and the lieutenant struck up a deal to investigate the root cause of why someone wants to see Larry and Andrew dead. Right now, Larry, Andrew, Lieutenant Mayfield, and a State trooper are in the SWAT conference room. I think they are putting together a plan. Let’s go there and maybe get some insight as to where this whole mess is heading.

“So major that is the long and short of it. Anything to add, detective?”

“You can call me Larry. No, Major, that’s about all. Short of getting back to Boston, I think trying to find the guys trying to kill Andrew and me is the next best thing.”

“Thank you, Larry. You and the Lieutenant did the right thing coming to the State Patrol. From what you told me, I think we are dealing with some professionals. Here’s what I think we should do.”

“One second major.”

“Yes, Lieutenant?”

“Larry just gave me an idea. What if we fake another trip to the airport?”

“I see where you are going. So maybe we can draw these guys out again?”

“And maybe get a prisoner who might be willing to trade some information for a break.”

“Okay, I think that is one plan. I was thinking of trying to ID the dead and perhaps getting a hit on their identity. We might be able to figure out who they are working for.”

“Good idea major, but so far, we have no hits.”

“Are you using the RAID system?”

“Yes, and INTERPOL as well.”

“It does take time for sure. Well, I guess we have to wait then.”

“What about my idea?”

“No offense, Lieutenant, but there are so many liability factors connected with your idea that I would be very hesitant to try.”

“Like what major?”

“What if one of these guys got killed. Their families and the lawyers would have a field day.”

“Not to mention it might hurt.”

“Yes, thank you, Larry.”

“Okay, then Major, what else can we do?”

“I have a couple of informants on the payroll. Let me talk to them and see if there is anything on the street about someone wanting to hire a hit.”

“How long will that take?”

“A couple of hours is all. I’ll make the calls. Do you have someplace private here?”

“Yes, you can use my office. Come with me, I’ll show you. You guys sit tight. I’ll be right back.”

“Thanks, Lieutenant.”

“Larry?”

“What, Andrew?”

“You sure he’s gone?”

“Looks that way.”

“I got this uneasy feeling.”

“You hungry?”

“No, not hunger. Uneasy feeling about this whole thing.”

“Talk to me.”

“It seems odd that someone could commit suicide with poison. In jail.”

“Yeah, I thought so too, but sometimes that’s how it goes.”

“Call me suspicious, but we need to be careful.”

Answers by John W. Howell © 2020

“Is there any way I can convince you to get that screaming  baby out of my face?”

“He’s your new brother, and he wants to kiss you.”

“That is about the last thing on Earth he will do if he tries.”

“Oh, come on. You were excited when you heard you were going to have a brother.”

“That is before he got here with his smelly pants and milk barf breath.”

“Are we a bit jealous?”

“Jealous of something that has all the personality of third base at the ball diamond? Not likely.”

“But he’s just a baby.”

“I know, and when he gets old enough to fetch whatever I want him to get, he can stay that way.”

“You are being very hard.”

“I just think that if someone had asked my opinion before ordering him online, I would have at least had some say so in the situation.”

“‘Ording him online.’ That’s pretty funny.”

“What’s so funny. Are you saying babies don’t come from Home Depot?”

“No, they don’t.”

“Where do they come from then?”

“I . . . uh . . . er well, that is a long story.”

“Let me just ask one question.”

“Okay, but I don’t think you are old enough to understand the answer.”

“Trust me, I can deal with the answer.”

“Okay. What’s the question?”

“Does this kid come with a money-back guarantee?”
