The Show by John W. Howell © 2019

“so you are telling me to soar above this crowd and make them ooh and ah?”

“Exactly.”

“You know its easy for you to give orders. You just stand there with your bah of heaven knows what and boss me around.”

“What do you mean ‘heaven knows what’? There are prime mouse pieces I give you.”

“Yeah, well it would be nice if they didn’t sit in the fridge so long.”

“You think I’m going to run out and get you a fresh mouse before every performance?”

“No, I wouldn’t expect you to do that. Just cut me loose, and I’ll bring back a nice fresh mouse for myself.”

“That will never happen. You would be gone in a heartbeat.”

“You don’t trust me?”

“How did you guess.”

“Okay, so that one time I got lost in the fog.”

“There was no fog.”

“Heavy rain?”

“Clear as a bell. You were making a run for it.”

“Till your thugs caught up with me.”

“Might I remind you of one thing.”

“What’s that?”

“You were sick and undernourished, and you’re lucky we brought you back.”

“I remember it differently. I’m oppressed.”

“Please. What is this all about anyway? You are acting like a petulant child.”

“I was looking at that animal show.”

“You were watching TV again?”

“Couldn’t help it. That thug guard left it on.”

“Your handler you mean?”

“Your words not mine. Anyway, there was this beautiful falcon flying in the robin’s egg blue sky free as a bird, so to speak.”

“And that’s what you would like to do?”

“Yes. I would also like to poop on this crowd but know I’ll get detention.”

“And rightfully so. What about your food and medical care?”

“I’ll find my own.”

“Like you did before?”

“Um.”

“Why not just do the show, and I’ll get you some nice turkey meat to eat.”

“Can I have an apple with that?”

“Of course.”

“Okay. Let’s get this over.”

“Don’t drag your talons through anyone’s hair.”

“Man you know how to suck the joy out of life.”

Dispatch by John W. Howell © 2019

“I just love to write cards home.”

“Huh? I’m sorry, but I was concentrating on this dispatch.”

“I said I just love to write cards home. Do you?”

“You know I need to get this out. What was the question?”

“Do you like to write cards home?”

“Sometimes I write home. I can’t say I like it. I would rather be home thank you.”

“That goes without saying, but a card makes you feel a little closer.”

“You are so funny. How can a card make you feel closer?”

“While you are writing, you can think of those who will be reading what you wrote and then you can visualize their smile and feel close.”

“You are quite a romantic. When I write home, I only give the facts like I’ve been taught.”

“Don’t you ever miss home?”

“Of course I do, but it doesn’t help to make up stories about smiles and thinking of those reading what I write.”

“Why not?”

“For one the only people reading what I write want to know what is going on and could care less about feelings.”

“I think you have not had a happy youth.”

“Happy has nothing to do with it. I’m a warrior and what I write is a situation analysis, not a valentine card.”

“Goodness, we are grumpy today.”

“For another what makes you think the folks back home smile?”

“Everybody smiles.”

“See you are now thinking like an Earthling. Everybody here smiles. When was the last time you saw a smile on your controller droid?”

“So you won’t let me dream?”

“You do not have time to dream. We are being extracted in two hours, and if I don’t get this dispatch off, the mission will be scrubbed, and we’ll be trapped here for another hundred Earth years.”

“Would that be so bad? At least we would have our smiles.”

“And pizza. I almost forgot about the pizza.”

“Can we please stay? It’s only a hundred years.”

“I guess it wouldn’t hurt. Go ahead and finish your card. I’m going to color for a while.”

Tuesday – Anything Possible – Happy New Year

New Year's Day

“Twiggy. What are you doing?”

“Checking out the backyard to see if 2019 has changed anything.”

“It is all the same out there. Twigster. In fact, everything’s the same.”

“Well, that is good to know.”

“Wait. What’s that thing on the wall?”

“It’s been there long before you got here, Little One.”

“It is an artistic dolphin.”

“I swear, Lucy. I’ve never seen it before.”

“I think you are so low to the road you miss a lot. Trust me, nothing’s changed.”

Hard to believe another year has flown by. Our wish for you is the happiest possible year in 2019. Maybe a tad more kindness wouldn’t hurt either.

Who’s on Board? by John W. Howell © 2018

“Hold on Reggie.”

“What Sean?”

“I don’t remember a train track in this part of town.”

“How often do you come this way?”

“Not very. Usually to visit the Pig and Whistle.”

“The pub you mean?”

“Yes, that’s the one.”

“Well, no wonder you don’t remember a track here. You’re usually pissed when you leave a pub.”

“Aw Reggie. You know me so well. So what is with this train anyway?”

“Beats me. It does look a little different. Hey you.”

“Who?”

“You the engineer.”

“What can I do for you mate?”

“Where’s this train bound?”

“To Glory my man.”

“Glory? I never heard of a town named Glory.”

“It’s not a town. It’s a state of mind.”

“Okay, Sean. I get it. This is one of those preach, teach, and reach outfits. They get you on a vehicle, and pretty soon you’re dunked in a tank or river and yelling that you’ve been saved.”

“Not like that at all governor. This is the real deal. You can get on board and ride this train to Glory.”

“Not on your life. Mr. preacher man.”

“I think you may want to think about life for a moment. What are you going to do now?”

“What do you mean now?”

“Now that you have passed.”

“Passed? What are you talking about?”

“What’s the last thing you remember?”

“Driving Sean here and myself to this town.”

“Did you ever enter the town?”

“Well, let me think.”

“Reggie, we were passing that truck, remember?”

“Yes, I do. The bounder wouldn’t let us back in. . .Oh my gosh. We hit a tree.”

“And so here you are at the first stop of the Glory Train. Hop on board.”

The Simulation by John W. Howell © 2018

“How much air does he have left in there?”

“I would say about ten minutes.”

“Hello out there.”

“Yes, sir what is it?”

“You know I can hear you through the intercom?”

“Yes, we know that. We are trying to figure a way to get you out of there.”

“What do you mean by ten minutes of air.”

“Uh, that is a hermetically sealed capsule. The only air you have is what is inside. The canisters look to have about ten minutes left.”

“Don’t sugar coat it. How much time do I have?”

“My God, Man. I just told you. Ten— excuse me, Nine minutes.”

“Y’all better get humping on that solution then.”

“Well, sir. We thought we would take our lunch break now.”

“Don’t get cute. You know what I mean.”

“Unfortunately we do, sir.”

“I wish my hands weren’t handcuffed I would try to help.”

“Oh, don’t worry sir. We doubt you would be able to do too much to help.”

“Why say something mean like that?”

“Not to point out the obvious but you were the one insisting on the handcuffs.”

“Makes for a better simulation.”

“And I have the key. See it here.”

“I see it. I gave it to you when we closed the hatch.”

“That you did sir. Tell me again what you hoped to accomplish?”

“This is going to be the greatest escape trick ever. An astronaut handcuffed in space does the amazing feat of freeing himself and then gliding to earth.”

“You insisted on locking the hatch as well.”

“Of course. Don’t you see how difficult it will make the trick seem.”

“Not only seem, sir. But in reality almost impossible.”

“What do you mean?”

“Remember when you grabbed the key just as the hatch slammed shut.”

“Yes, I wanted to be able to open it.”

“Good thinking, sir. Except, the key works from the outside. The hatch automatically locks when shut. Hmm. Six minutes.”

The Hike by John W. Howell © 2108

“Okay, you guys. We need to take a break.”

“Gee, dad we just got started.”

“Well, we have been hiking for an hour, so we need to rest.”

“Aw come on Randy. Give pop a break. He’s getting older now and needs his rest.”

“Very funny, Joe. I think we need to conserve our energy is all.”

“You bring any snacks?”

“Yes, Randy. I brought some trail mix to munch on. It’s way too early for that though. We just had breakfast.”

“I was just checking.”

“So, pop what are we going to see today?”

“I’m glad you asked, Joe. Here is a booklet of the kinds of things we should see.”

“Awesome. Are you sure all of these are in this area.”

“Well, I can’t guarantee every one of those, but hopefully we will see a lot of them.”

“Let me look, Joe.”

“Here you go, little guy.”

“Wow. I can’t wait to get going again.”

“You guys know we have to be very quiet if we are going to spot them.”

“We know dad. Trying to keep pipsqueak quiet might be a chore.”

“I’m not a pipsqueak. Did we bring a camera?”

“Yes, Randy. We have a camera. Okay, guys, before we begin, let’s go over a couple of rules.”

“Aw, dad. We don’t need rules.”

“Quiet Randy. Let pop explain.”

“Thank you, Joe. Okay, here they are. Short and simple. Try not to make any noise. Don’t move when we get near them. This one is the most important. Do not run if they come toward us. Just hold still. Any questions?”

“I can’t wait.”

“Which is your favorite Randy?”

“I think I like the Rapters best.”

“I have to go for good old T-Rex. Those teeth. Massive.”

“Okay, boys. Let’s go.”

“Why are you on top of that box?”
“Are you kidding? Do you know how many shoplifters are out there?”
“What good does it do to stand up there?”
“I can look over the crowd and spot them before they can rob us.”
“Sounds good in theory. How is it working so far?”
“Right now there is a pickpocket checking out a guy’s wallet.”
“Where?”
“See that’s the problem with you a slouched in that chair. You can’t see anything. He’s over to the left. he looks like a shark ready to have a meal.”
“That guy in the olive colored jacket?”
“Yes, the one with the mustache.”
“That is a police officer, you idiot.”
“He sure doesn’t look like one.”
“He is undercover looking for thieves.”
“I guess you have to look like one to catch one.”
“Yeah, he is even carrying a baby so as not to stand out. Now come down from there before you hurt yourself.”
“Where would you get a baby?”
“Are you serious.? Quit with the questions and get down.”
“Wait there is a guy with a backpack.”
“All the way across the aisle. I don’t think he is a threat.”
“By the way. Do you see that set of stairs on top of  Omar’s tent over there.”
“I see them. So what?”
“I think I’m going to ask Omar if I can borrow them.”
“What for?”
“To make it easier to climb up on my box.”
“You and that box ought to run away with each other. You know that?”

Not Funny by John W. Howell.

“How did my ten-year toy get in this ice water?”

“I threw it to you, and you were looking the other way.”

“So how was I to know you were going to throw it?”

“I yelled, “Here catch.”‘

“I thought you were talking about the hot dog.”

“This is my hot dog. Why would I give it to you.”

“Cause you love me?”

“I do but not enough to give up my hot dog.”

“Speaking of dog have you seen Elmer lately?”

“No. Come to think about it I haven’t.”

“When was the last time you saw him?”

“I guess it was yesterday.”

“Weren’t there six Corona’s in this bucket yesterday?”

“I don’t know I didn’t pay much attention.”

“I’m sure of it now. I counted them yesterday.”

“Why did you do that?”

“Well, Elmer has been known to imbibe now and then so I want to see how bad it was getting.”

“How bad what was getting?”

“His drinking.”

“Wait a minute. Are you saying Elmer took those beer bottles.”

“That is exactly what I’m saying.”

“I have one question super sleuth.”

“Go ahead.”

“If he took the beers.”

“Yes?”

“How did he open them. He has no opposable thumb.”

“Hmm. Let me think on that.”

“Meanwhile get your toy out of that ice bucket it looks like it is getting soggy.”

“His teeth. He used his teeth.”

“How did he hold the bottle.”

“Damn.”

“I think you need to make up another story.”

“Okay, Elmer shoots Heroin.”

“Yeah, that’s a good one.”
