Stream of Consciousness Saturday.

a S

This week’s Stream of consciousness prompt is the letter “s.”  If you would like to learn more about this fun exercise go to http://lindaghill.com/2014/10/10/the-friday-reminder-and-prompt-for-socs-october-1114/  and ask for Linda Hill. Oh yeah, tell her John sent you. Here is my contribution to this week’s prompt “s”

The exercise is to write the first thing that comes to mind after seeing the letter “s.” I have to admit the first thing on my mind is simply silly subjects submitted Saturday summarily sanctioned sanctimoniously. I know that is a mind or mouth full but there you have it. The ranting’s of a truly deranged mind.

My second thought on the letter “s” had to do with those people who say shoot instead of shit. I have always found them to be genteel and of good manners. I have wished to be like them but whenever the opportunity arises I always revert back to the base element.  Take hitting my thumb with a hammer. I want to say shoot, but it never seems to work out. Also asking someone to pick up something they have thrown down never seems to have the punch when you say, “excuse me would you pick up that shoot over there?”

I guess I am doomed to continue to show my lack of education and breeding by continuing to ignore a very effective way of lifting my speech out of the shoot and into a higher plane. (Doesn’t sound right somehow) Oh, shoot maybe I need more practice. Damn what is this on my shoe? I wish people would pick up their dog shoot. Maybe the English have it right. Just say shite and be done with it.

  2. Great post John and I was going to comment on it anyway, and then I got the bit about us English 🙂 I am one of your genteel people I’m afraid and I use many alternatives to the ‘s’ swear word, some do indeed use ‘shite’ as you have quoted however there are a heck of a lot more who use the base word that you mention. It is as common here as saying Good Morning so I wouldn’t take too much notice of our manners 😉

  3. I can’t recall when I lost my genteel and proper self. I still say shoot but not as often. 😀

  4. Shit was the only curse word I ever heard my grandmother say and not very often either. Ususally it was hissed in a harshly spoken whisper after an injury.

  5. I have what my mother would call a “potty” mouth: lots of nasty words come out of it, especially when I’m pissed about something (see what I mean?). Over the years I’ve learned to rein it in when I’m around other people, especially coworkers and acquaintances, people who don’t know me well. But it’s an effort. At the same time, I don’t enjoy movies, TV shows, or books where the speech is riddled with vulgarities. My favorite example is the movie Glengarry Glen Ross. There was so much swearing that my husband and I felt battered and bruised when the movie ended.

An author once wrote that frequent use of the F-word demonstrated a lack of imagination on the part of the person using the word. That idea has stayed with me (except I don’t remember the author’s name) so while the F-word is actually one of my favorite words to utter, especially when I’m angry, I try to keep it to a minimum so people don’t think I lack imagination 😉

  8. You never know what you’ll write whenever stream of consciousness gets involved. Fun read, John. And let’s just say hitting your thumb with a hammer is tame in comparison to what comes out of the mouths of folks who ride on a bus every day! 😉
