Stream of Consciousness Saturday

This is in response to the Stream of Consciousness Saturday prompt using the word or thought of two. The prompt and rules can be found at: http://lindaghill.wordpress.com/2014/08/08/the-friday-reminder-and-prompt-for-socs-august-914/

A Couple by John W. Howell © 2014

“Give me a couple of those donuts.”

“A couple? Do you mean two?”

“Yeah, I mean two. What do you think a couple is?”

“Well, where I come from a couple could be four or more.”

“How’s that?”

“You got mom and dad and the young ens. We say that’s a couple.”

“Okay, but you don’t say a couple of donuts is more than two.”

“You do if they are on sale like buy two get one free. Then a couple is three.”

“Okay, so maybe I’m pretty dumb. I wouldn’t call a couple of donuts three even if the one was free.”

“You are not in the donut business.”

“And I’m so glad I’m not.”

“Here’s your donuts. That’ll be a couple of dollars.”

“A couple as in two or three?”

“Surprise me.”

Funny I would see this piece first thing. I am on a quest to find the new Dunkin Donut for Peyton. He loves doughnuts/donuts. So the question is do I get a couple or a few? For me – I get coffee:)

I would get a few. A couple sounds a little sparse. (even if it is three)

Haha… I am not sure if I would be pissed mad at the ‘couple expert’ for his ironic response after the lecture on what ‘couple’ means. Love the twist, made me break out in laughter.

Loved it. My very proper Aunt corrected my grammar all the time. We didn’t cut the grass, we mowed the lawn…It wasn’t cheap, it was more affordable…stuff like that. She said a couple was two, a few was three or four and five or more was several.

“You got mom and dad and the young ens. We say that’s a couple.” Wouldn’t that be two couples? The parents (one couple) with a couple of kids.

    Funny and entertaining.

That’s why “it’ll just take a couple minutes” can mean anywhere from two minutes to two hours! Great post! And if a “couple donuts” means 3, who am I to argue with that? Obviously the third one has no calories, so why not 😉

Thanks for the visit. You are right. If it’s free it’s free of all encumbrances

For some reason, I am craving donuts now. Luckily, there aren’t too many sources for such a thing in Taiwan. And it’s way too hot and humid to make them myself. I guess I’ll wait until November. haha Nice post on the two thing. 🙂
