This is a photo prompt by Keith Channing. He will explain what is going on. “Using this photo (below) as inspiration, write a short story, flash fiction, scene, poem; anything, really; and either put it (or a link to it) in a comment or email it to me at keithkreates@channing.fr before 6pm next Sunday (if you aren’t sure what the time is where I live, this link will tell you). If you post it on your own blog or site, a link to this page would be appreciated, but please do also mention it in a comment here – pingbacks don’t often work.
Go on. You know you want to. Let your creativity and imagination soar. I shall display the entries, with links to your own blog or web site, next Monday.”

The Dog Statue by John W. Howell © 2016
“You say that thing is a statue?”
“Yup. That’s what my grandpappy told me.”
“It looks so real. In fact, I don’t trust it.”
“I don’t either.”
“Oh come on. It’s been standing like that since we got here. You two are just being chicken.”
“You think? Have you looked in a mirror lately?”
“What do you mean?”
“We are chickens you, idiot.”
“Never mind that. There is no reason to be afraid of a statue.”
“How are you so sure it is a statue anyway. You said something about your grandpappy?”
“Yeah, my grandpappy told me about the statue when I was just a chick.”
“Where’s your grandpappy now?”
“Oh, he passed away.”
“Passed away? How? Old age?”
“No one in the family knows for sure. It’s a mystery.”
“Tell us about it.”
“The only thing the family knows is grandpappy said he was going out for a stroll and that’s the last anyone heard of him.”
“A stroll? Where?”
“He said he was going for a stroll in the dog statue garden.”
“And that doesn’t tell you something?”
“Like what?”
“Like the last thing to see your grandpappy alive was a dog statue.”
“I never thought of that. Too bad that statue can’t tell us what happened.”
“Excuse me but I gotta go.”
“Me too.”
“Aw don’t go. Come back you guys.”

I’ll bet grandpappy tasted good. As I recall, Flash (the greyhound) was so shocked to see these chickens that had made their way into his territory, that he was, for a while, frozen to the spot;

I was raised about chickens and they are beasts. Giggle..
My dad was a cowboy chicken farmer. Loved those things more than any horse or cow.

Solid, boss. And thanks for the love, as per. You’re a good man, Charlie Brown.

Hey folks! Don’t be blaming grandpappy’s demise on people because people don’t eat tough old grandpappy’s… If anything, blame it on the coyote statues that keep shifting around the yard.
